Prompt:
Autumnpaw felt queasy as he watched Blazepaw leap up the rocks on the side of the camp, Towheepaw and Pinepaw watching excitedly as the tom made his way up the side. A loud gasp erupted as he reached the highest point, or at least, higher than the other two had been. Towheepaw screeched excitedly, Pinepaw leaping in place as Blazepaw stood triumphantly on the side of the wall.
"And voila, that's how it's done, next!" The orange-furred tabby called, leaping down. The Unclimbable Wall, as it was called, was a classic game played by apprentices The goal is simple: Climb as high as you can on the sturdy ruins that surround the camp. Your turn ends when you either can't go on or you give up and turn tail. SequoiaClan cats don't turn away from climbing, something that is as natural as breathing. It's a specialty. It's how they made their name. It's something Autumnpaw can't bring himself to do.
Having a fear of heights in a clan whose name is built around their climbing techniques is rather difficult, but Autumnpaw figured he could avoid it. Apparently, that was impossible, something he figured out as soon as he became an apprentice and Blazepaw challenged him to a round, the other apprentices clamoring excitedly to join in. Curious, Autumnpaw agreed, immediately regretting it when the tom explained the rules and went first.
Needless to say, Autumnpaw went up one level, stomach in his throat as he teetered on the edge, laughing nervously as he leaped down into the encouraging yowls of his clanmates.
For a time, he avoided the game, but Blazepaw was insistent (he was quite good at the game, and even Silverpaw would join in, presenting the older tom's only challenge) and eventually, Autumnpaw couldn't avoid his fellow apprentices. They coerced him into the game, and every time, he lost, leaping only to the second level, occasionally getting one level higher, but nonetheless, losing.
Which brings us to the present, where Autumnpaw makes his way towards the wall used for the game.
He gulped, and readied himself for the leap.
He leapt.
He leapt again.
He leapt once more, took one glance down, and his head spun, gut twisted and curling. He felt sick, and immediately jumped down, much to the disappointment of his clanmates, but much to the relief of himself.
"Let's play something else." Autumnpaw mumbled, shaking lightly, and breathing in relief from touching the ground.
"Awww, but you were so close to beating your personal record!" Blazepaw said, and the other apprentices nodded.
"M-my what?" Autumnpaw asked surprised.
"Your personal record! You've only ever gotten to the third paw-hold, but you always improve you leaps every time we play!" Blazepaw explained.
"But I always lose; I can barely climb a tree, much less the wall." Autumnpaw asked, confused.
"So? You're improving, yeah? That's what being an apprentice is all about! Doesn't matter if you win or lose, have you seen your leaping form? It's pretty killer now." Silverpaw said, Autumnpaw purred from the praise.
"R-really?" He asked.
"Definitely." The others responded.
And for once in Autumnpaw's life, he felt that maybe losing wasn't always so bad.
