Extension Notice

Postby Kyar » Wed Jun 12, 2019 8:59 am

Quick announcement!

Per user request, this competition (along with their sibling's competition) has been extended!
The new end date is July 7th, 11:59 pm Central time!

I know this is a long extension but as I'll be out of town for the 30th, I don't see any reason to close it when I can't be around to judge. There will be no more extensions, so please use this time wisely! :)
Have a good day y'all.
Please contact me here or on TH - I will no longer be using Discord!

Now it basically ends on my favourite time of the year, so I have nothing against it !

Also more time is always great, never enough.

For as long as Bay can remember there has only been him, and Faine, and an intolerable stretch of desert.

If he has any memories of childhood, they've long since faded. He has no real concept of parents, or family; he has only the slight pressure of Faine perched on his shoulder, the chattering of the little bird as he swoops circles around Bay's bent head. There is only this, and them, and the idea of a horizon that leads to something else.

He survives the desert only because of his plants. When he tires his plants lead him inexorably to water -- they present their thirst in a weird tingling sensation along his spine, the flowers yearning this way or that, the leaves straining towards some distant scent or sight. He trails along in their wake, feels them blossom the closer he gets, feels Faine step light-footed among the roots. His bird is as at home there as he is anywhere on Bay's body, and he treads fearlessly. They stop for water when Bay inexplicably finds it, and he submerges himself for the sake of the plants he has never questioned and to slake his own thirst. Eventually, he retreats to the shore, where he sprawls loose-limbed and lazy in the wet sand.

Days go on like this, months, years maybe. A quiet morning where he loiters by an oasis; a quieter afternoon, when he sleeps; a livelier evening, when the sun inches past the sand dunes and Bay can walk without losing his head. The heat gets to him, if he isn't patient, goads him in circles and aimless drifts. It's only ever Faine, striking like a lightning bolt to the shell of his ear, that forces him to reroute to safety.

Often the two talk. It never occurs to Bay to find it strange that Faine speaks to him, for he has never known anything else. He knows nothing of chevma, the old Valisen word for 'soul'; he knows nothing of the mythology surrounding his ancestors, of the concept of a soul flitting outside his body, a soul that yanks his hair when Faine gets irritable with him and tells him his business. Had Bay still lived in a town he might know of these things, might even know of what happened to his people -- but the sickness has long since faded here, and the sand is empty of anyone but them.

Sometimes Faine says the oddest things. Things like, "What if we went to another plane?" out of nowhere, in the heat of the day when Bay drowses in the narrow shade of a cactus.

Bay turns to him. He squints against the sun and studies the little bird, who jumps companionably to Bay's outstretched arm so they can look at one another. Bay says, finally, "What?" and feels the muzziness the sun drains into him.

Faine flickers. He fluffs his wings, resettles his feathers, nervously preens his chest. "I don't know what came over me," he says eventually, every time they have this conversation. "I don't even know what that means."

"I wish we could go somewhere else," Bay says sometimes. Only sometimes, when the loneliness gets to him, when some intrinsic part of him remembers that they should miss people. "Somewhere where something happens, maybe."

At this point, Faine sidles closer and runs his beak through Bay's fine blue hair. He always says, "One day we will," and it feels like something that's been said a hundred times before and also simultaneously like nothing Bay has ever heard. He always smiles and blows a kiss at the bird, just to make his chevma laugh.

(If he remembered anything at all, his mothers or his huge family or the little town he grew up in, he might remember Nyiri. Nyiri and his vulture Kauket, who entertained Bay with stories growing up of jumping planes. It was an unusual gift but not uncommon among his family, this ability to transcend the boundaries between the worlds at will, and Nyiri had high hopes that Bay would follow in his own footsteps when he got older. He'd vanished from this plane when Bay's family had gotten sick, falsely believing that Bay himself had already passed.

Bay, for no apparent reason apart from luck of the draw, got sick, sweated alone through the ugly symptoms, and came to in an unfamiliar place. Wandered from his house in the worst of the fever, the disease sliding sideways to Faine and rending the two of them from their shared childhood. Left him with a bird and a desert and a strange plant that seemed as much a part of him as any other limb, and the day Bay was strong enough to get up he began to walk. It's been five years now, though Bay himself has lost count. He walks on anyway.)
