Lili released a long breath and drew her blankets toward her, fingering her phone. Her anxiety was making her heart race, making the already stressful decision even worse. Did she really owe him an apology? It wasn't her fault. The situation had been so confusing- Lili had never expected him to react that way. When she'd told him the words he didn't want to hear for the second time, he blew up. In his defense, what she had said was kind of rude. Rude, but true.
The relationship was toxic, that was definite. But was it his fault..? Maybe he didn't know what he was doing to hurt her feelings. Hurt her feelings. She scoffed at her own wording. Was this a kindergarten fight?
Lili squeezed her eyes shut, contemplating her options. Either conform to Aaron's toxicity in their relationship or break up with him... either way seemed a risky option. She stopped herself. Was breaking up risky? What would she lose? A jerky, sometimes sweet boyfriend? Sure, he's be mad at her, but in that moment, Lili knew it was best for her to break up with him. And her admitting what he had done wrong wasn't her fault. She didn't owe him an apology at all. It was his fault for blowing up and getting mad at her.
Powering on her phone, she unlocked it, and, paws shaking, opened her messages app. She found the one she was looking for, the one labeled BF with a bunch of heart emojis. Taking one last deep breath, she tapped on it and began to write.
Aaron,
I know you're still angry at me for telling you that you've been a toxic boyfriend. I've been thinking, though, and I think it's best if we go our separate ways. If you can't take an honest push in the right direction, maybe that's a sign that you're not understanding. I just want to let you know I'm not going to be seeing you, and I think this is for the best of both of us. I'm not sorry at all, but have a nice rest of your life.
See you around,
Lili.
She had done it.
Lili read through the words one more time. They seemed so blunt- a good response, she thought. Without a second thought, she hit send and relaxed, powering off her phone and collapsing into her nest of blankets.
