An only child, born into a poor family, Berhane was treasured as his family's only hope for survival. Taught by his father, Berhane became a thief; only stealing from the rich who misused their money, he became something like Robin Hood to the children around the neighborhood.
His greed, though well intentioned, grew strong over time: he soon went from stealing only a few coins a day to stealing valuable jewelry and gems from wherever he saw them, be it a rich kalon who misused money or not. Despite being poor and sick, his family didn't see this as good as Berhane thought, but they couldn't do anything. Whatever they said, Berhane just didn't listen.
One day, the young kalon saw a strange and expensive-looking box in the paws of a seller. The kalon was old, but she seemed rich; a fine and expensive-looking cloth with golden edges was draped over her head, hiding her face from the eyes of strangers. Berhane saw several golden earrings decorating her torn ears, and a golden, gem-decorated bracelet was around her arm.
But despite all that gold, the only thing that seemed to catch his interests was that box. He felt like it was calling for him.
He wanted it. He had to get it.After waiting for the perfect moment, Berhane went for it: the seller was not looking, he snatched the box from the chair it sat on and ran.
Only stopping when he got into an alley, the young kalon took a closer look at the mysterious box. It was weirdly shaped, and it felt like it was pulsating in his paws.

As he held it, a strange feeling came over him. A moment later, the box opened.
Inside it was only steam at first, which started to slowly flow out of the box. It was like the steam was starting to envelop his paws; it felt cold yet warm, heavy yet light, both at the same time.
He couldn't help but stare at what was happening. Like he was being hypnotized. Was the steam even real?
As it started to clear, Berhane could see something resting in the box:
He jumped a bit as the box suddenly closed with a loud click. But it didn't close by itself; a paw rested on top of the lid, and the kalon ot was connected to glared at him angrily, yet her expression was more surprised than mad.
The old kalon Berhane stole the box from found him.
Instead of taking it back, though, she simply lead him away back to where she stayed while she was in town and explained to him what the box was and, after Berhane told her, why he felt like it was calling him.

The Key of Vaehniel has chosen its new Keykeeper.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Berhane had heard about the key before: legend says the city of Belhaven, the largest, oldest and most magnificent city in the country was built with the help of an angel, Vaehniel. The angel created a living, mechanical being: on its back, the city, the heart of the country rested. Vaehniel sent it into a deep sleep; the angel then let the key choose a guardian. Since then, it has been choosing guardian after guardian, waiting for someone to wake the mechanical beast up from its slumber. But the key in itself was a source of great power: its connection to the city made it possible for guardians to summon automatons made of the city itself, find lost or hidden objects (especially if said object had magic) and open any lock that was made in the city. They say whoever wakes the Sleeping City, they will have control over a being of unimaginable power.
The old kalon knew the tradition among Keykeepers: she had to help the young kalon learn to use key properly (and not to misuse it to his own benefit). Despite how much Berhane didn't want the responsibility, there was no room for slipping away from this important duty. But she had to hurry, because the reason she came to Berhane's little town was a mysterious gang's appearance in the big city. They wanted the key; she could only guess what for, but she wasn't about to give it to them to find out. Yet, the old kalon had to go back to Belhaven now. A big storm was coming and if she doesn't train the boy, everything will be lost.
So the two set out on an airship to the Living City, Belhaven; Berhane, though not looking forward to it, has to start to learn how to master and use the key the best he can. "Be it for my own benefit... Or for Belhaven."

Some things about him:Berhane is a bit of a cleptomaniac, but he says the reason for that is to keep his family alive. He actually does give everything he stole to them, so at least he's right, but he just can't not grab something that looks expensive and run away with it! He's a "see it to belive it" kalon who finds it hard to see the truth unless you have physical evidence of it (or a really good explanation). And despite being a thief, thanks to his mom, he's actually quite a gentleman.
He loves running on rooftops and the view the heights offer him! He also likes annoying others with lame jokes (especially dad jokes).
His favorite things include strawberries, brass goggles, the ticking of pocketwatches and the smell of cut grass.
But being late, small places, being the center of attention and stormy weathers are on his list of disliked things.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Some facts:Even though he can still run just as well as before, Berhane has a slimp on his front right wrist. This is due to an accident when he fell down from a rooftop as a kit. It still hurts sometimes, but he's gotten used to running with it. He has to let it rest for a while after he stops, though, before he starts running and jumping again.
When he told his parents he was leaving to Belhaven, his mom gave him an earring, one of the first things she successfully stole in her life; and his dad gave him his never-used cloak he received from his late brother.
His first friend in thebbig city was a mynah. His mentor, the old kalon lady found the poor thing in a broken pipe when it was still too young to fly. She didn't know how it got to a place where there were no trees around, so she took it home, giving Berhane am opportunity to occupy himself between training sessions.
Using the Key of Vaehniel requires energy. One would think summoning automatons requires the most amount, but it actually doesn't! Summoning an automaton lasts for only a short time, since after its summoned, it works like a normal machine. One just has to tell it what to do, and it will do it! Or not, depends on what kind of an automaton you want.
