story:
one of my favourite stories when i was little was "szelmostwa lisa witalisa" [mishief of witalis the fox] by jan brzechwa. it's in polish and i don't think there's a translated version. it's about a fox named witalis [vitalis] who's cunning and selfish. he's known for his incredibly beautiful tail, which he adored and even sometimes used it to hunt - he lured his prey with it. in his burrow he had a mirror, on which a crack always appeared when he was in danger, a box that he could use to track his prey, a bowl that was always full of food, a tyrolean hat and a golden comb that he used to brush his tail with.
he was mainly known for tricking other animals tho. once he heard that the bears live in poverty so he offered help and they agreed. the bears ended up being beaten up by the farmer's dogs and witalis took all the chickens, geese etc. for himself. he knew they were going to get their revenge, so he wrapped himself in bandages and pretended to be hurt as well and blamed the bears for being cowards.
one winter he claimed that he could make baked snow and all he needed were meat and snow. other animals believed him and gave him the ingredients thinking he will make them food. witalis stole all the meat and claimed that it didn't work because they brought the wrong snow.
he also tricked the animals into choosing him for their president, but he did nothing to help them and just used his new abilities.
finally, they got upset and decided to get their revenge. they caught the fox and cut off all the beautiful fur on his tail. he ran away and was never seen again.
i think the reader is supposed to dislike witalis for what he did but i've always felt sorry for him because of the ending for some reason.
[sorry if my english is bad uvu]
