micco was born to kind but strict parents who value tradition above all else, in a large sedentary tribe. he’s lived there his entire life, never traveling beyond the confines of their land at any point during his childhood. so for the longest time his only contact with the outside world were the traders and caravans who sought refuge with them from time to time. he had always hoped to travel beyond their land, explore the world and collect stories to share everywhere he went. and he now knew he would be able to travel beyond their land, but his plans had had to change the day it was decided that he would be the next chief.
❂
the thing is, his family line has led the tribe for as long as anyone can remember. currently it was his mother and father co-leading them, but one day it would be him. yet, that wasn’t how it was supposed to be. in accordance with tradition, his older brother should have been the next chief; however, the night of the ceremony it all fell to ruin. his family was nearly torn apart by the argument that ensued that night—the screaming unlike anything he’d ever heard before or since. it all came down to this: his brother refused to be the next chief. truthfully he wasn’t good at it anyway, but the real reason was because his brother loathed it more than anything. all his life he’d been prepared for this day, and now that it had come he couldn’t stand it. in addition, he argued that their cousin would be a much better chief that he ever could be anyway. everyone knew it to be true, but that didn’t matter: it wasn’t tradition,
❂
needless to say their parents refused to see reason. the shouting match only got worse, and eventually his father reached the point where he was threatening to disown his brother. it was then he knew he had to do something. once someone is disowned they are completely shunned by the tribe and must leave before the sun rises the following day, and they cannot return. and that was something he could never let happen, no matter the consequences. so he stepped up to the plate, sacrificing his freedom to avoid losing his brother. with a steady voice he had told them a simple truth that changed everything: the only real requirement of the tradition is that the chief-in-training be a descendant of the main line. his brother tried to stop him, but that night the ceremony was held with him in his brothers place.
❂
in the end, he’d much rather lead with his brother by his side than be some storyteller without him. but, that is not the real end of the story. after all, what the chief says is law. so once he is the chief, there is no one stopping him from retiring early and naming his cousin chief in his stead. he’s playing the long game, and he’ll win it all in the end. after all, what’s a few years in exchange for a lifetime of happiness?
