She could feel her chest constricting, her breath catching and lodging itself in her tightening throat. Her heart began to race, the ringing in hears only getting louder the more she struggled to inhale. Hot tears welled in her amber eyes and burned their way down her soft, damp cheeks. Her legs became wobbly, small white spots forming in the corner of her eyes and she closes them, succumbing to the cold and lonely silence that was darkness.
She couldn’t even hear her own heart hammering inside her chest. She became numb to the soft breeze tickling the tufts of fur on her ears that were much longer than the others. She became fully enraptured in the poison that was her mind, small whispers of degradation sending their toxins through her bloodstream and pushing against her lips. But the sound of soft chattering and light against her eyelids broke the nightmare and released hold of the tenseness in every muscle.
She hesitantly opened her eyes, fearful of what may materialize when they fully opened, however, there was nothing. Nothing but softly lit streetlights and the smell of midnight rain perfuming the Vancouver air around her, the small hoof clicks of others melding with the sounds of distant sirens and car horns. Ruelle didn’t know how she made it here, but she was grateful that her body knew exactly where she needed to be when she needed it most. She willed herself to her faintly trembling legs, willing every muscle in her body to push her forward. She remembered the exact street names to take, repeated them in her head in an unspoken mantra, recognized the landmarks through foggy eyes.
It wasn’t long before her hooves hit the boardwalk, the illumination of fairy lights reflecting off her shiny, caramel hooves. How magical it was; for the smallest of bulbs to produce a warmth that immediately spread throughout Ruelle’s entire body. She was captivated, completely enthralled in the soft glow and unaware of those who passed by her. She slowly came to it as more people fluttered about around her, and she allowed them to, casting glances at old and new faces as they passed.
She stood there, patiently waiting on that boardwalk, ignoring the small nudges from those trying to push their way through. Night beaches were always popular this time of year, and many tourists flocked to see the soft ripples in the giant lake that nestled into the town’s side. Ruelle, unlike the others, was not here for the water, nor for the late-night romantic swims and stolen kisses under soft moonlight. What she was here for would come in due time, and as the beach opened for the crowd, her haven finally opened for her to rush to.
She didn’t even feel herself run; all she could remember was the shocking jolt that coursed through her body as it came to a sudden halt at the edge of the pier, her hooves nearly touching the very edge of the wooden boards. She stood there, rigid, the darkness slowly clouding her vision once more as she replayed the events from just a few hours before. She could almost feel the sting of their words on her skin, the sound of shattering glass and the sound of the word “worthless” on their tongues.
Darkness does not exist without the presence of light, just as morning does not exist without the inevitable clutches of the night. She remembered the light, the lights, the small lights decorating the poles on the pier. She opened her eyes once more, her hooves coming into vision, and her reflection in the small rain puddles forming in the dips of the old wood. Looking up, the lake glistened before her, and she took a breath, something she had forgotten to do, something she felt as if she hadn’t done since she fought the darkness for the first time that night.
The rain came and Ruelle embraced it, letting it slowly drench her coat and flow down her cheeks, to where not even she herself could tell her own tears from those of the clouds. He heart began to slow and almost match the tempo of the fairy lights as they slowly clinked against one another, their reflection dancing on the still water below. Her muscles began to slowly work in tandem, allowing Ruelle’s lips to curl into a serene smile. With another cherished breath, Ruelle allowed herself to lay down on the moist boardwalk and lean against one of the poles beside her. She was then able to close her eyes, her smile never fading as she herself became one with the Vancouver rain and her city’s soft, fairy light lullaby.
