Act 1
The spring winds have begun, blowing warming air into your warren's territory. It is exciting and your Warren is abuzz with energy! For the older rabbits, it is a time to remember their youth, for young rabbits it’s a time for boundless energy, and for the ones in between… it is time to tell the age-old tale of the Festival of the Coming Sun and Frith's Emissary.
“Tales passed down from story teller to story teller speak of a downy colored cotton tailed rabbit that had been complaining time and time again about the waning sun. Frith offered the young buck a portion of their power to see if he would truly hang the summer sun. As the legend goes, Frith favored the young buck in his efforts and so every season, when the cold begins to drag on and become rain, Frith endows yet another creature with the powers to hang the sun, and bring warmth back to the animals that yearn for it.”
The false spring falls into cool air once again when one oddly warm day, a small Chipmunk scurries into your territory with its tail twitching in excitement. “Young Rabbits, the Festival of the Coming Sun may begjn! The Emissary you have been waiting for has arrived!” As Rah, you are unsure of this chipmunk, but know well enough that luck is given to any Warren that hosts Frith's Emissary on its trip across the land, so you decide, ‘what could it hurt to home it for a small time?’

Prompt piece: [551 / 500 words]

It started out as a normal spring day in Deerbarrow warren; the rah woke early and stretched out before waking the rest of the members. After some grumblings and words of protest from some, the growing group of rabbits ventured outside of the burrow to grab some breakfast before starting off on their assigned duties when a stranger appeared. Igetis-rah tilted his head in order to inspect the newcomer more thoroughly. Of course, there had been tales that warrens would have good luck if they housed this guest for a short time so after a quiet deliberation, the oreo colored buck agreed to take in their new guest.

For the other members, they had a mixed reaction of sorts; while a few of them were quite excited about the chipmunk's arrival, others were skeptical of it while others still didn't choose to acknowledge the guest at all. Childlike Myrtia, ghostly grey and full of life, was the most excited of the group to have a new friend in the warren. "You can even share my nest if you want! I can make you up a little bed of some of my nesting materials," the eager one year old told the guest, to which everyone talked her out of as Myrtia had a bad habit of both tossing in her sleep as well as munching on nesting materials if the group didn't get out for breakfast soon enough.

Motherly caretaker Bittersweet was another rabbit that was relatively excited at the arrival of the chipmunk, although arguably the fawnlike doe loved the more members in the warren to look out for in general. When the guest made their presence and mission known, her face lit up as pleasant memories from her youth. "Come now, Emmisary, I shall make you at home in one of our private sleeping chambers while you stay with us. I hope you find it suitable for your needs," she told the guest in a pleasant tone as she looked to Siopi to see how he would react.

The silent black and tan buck, Siopi, seemed rather suspicious to the sudden appearance of the newcomer who claimed to be the Frith's Emmisary. Growing up as a lone rabbit for much of his youth, he had never heard the tales about the Festival or the Emmisary or much of anything really. Most of what he did know of the subject was buried in the part of his memory that his mind blocked to help the young rabbit deal with the traumas he had faced in his youth. He had tilted his head and narrowed his eyes, body language telling the others he was on edge and borderline aggressive to the chipmunk. Igetis-rah put a paw on the back of the buck as he whispered, "It'd be wise to keep your opinion to yourself. You can keep an eye on our guest, if you don't trust him but I don't need any unsolicited aggression or hostility. Understand?" Siopi, not impressed by his leader's words but wanting to heed the order given to him, he nodded curtly at the Rah and relaxed his body language, still keeping a wary eye on the guest.

The rabbits who also reacted with a skeptical reaction were Dynami and her sibling Mamaro, while Lupin simply didn't seem to acknowledge the newcomer at all.

    It was a joke.

It had to be a joke. There was no way in Frith's name Crackle was going to house this...this...

    "He's a chipmunk."

Crackle's left eye twitched at Galie's keen observation while Cinnamon spoke to the little creature, actually listening to the lil pipsqueak. Ombre sat closeby, occassionally lifting her head to chance a glance around. They'd been in the middle of a rather nice silflay after all before being so rudely interrupted, and she was best at keeping watch. Warbles hoeever seemed to hover over their new visitor with wide eyes.

"How did you not see this?" Crackle huffed and Galie drew up immediately, her ears ramrod straight indignantly.

" 'Ow come you ain't welcome the Emissary of Frith?!" She snapped back and Crackle grimaced around a mouthful of greenstuffs. Swallowing the plants down he huffed. "Because I don't believe him! Look you ain't even had a vision of him! And he just shows up seekin refuge?" Crackle shook his head, eyes narrowing at the chipmunk. "Somethin just ain't right with that! Why would Frith send a chipmunk to be doin a rabbit's job?!"

Galie snorted. "Maybe cuz rabbit's ain't meant tah be holdin' up the sun."

    "And the chipmunk is?!"

Galie raised her paws in a placating gensture. "All I'm sayin is, yeah it's not the most convincin scheme in the world, but we're in the desert. Maybe the lil guy needs ah stay but knew you wouldn't jus' open the burrah to some lil bug eyed rodent."

"He is bug eyed," Crackle conceeded reluctantly while Galie nodded sympathetically. "An' ah rodent."

    "Aren't we technically rodents?"
    "Laupine yea. Rodents no."

Crackle made a sound of confusion but didn't argue the point anymore, shaking his head. Instead he watched the chipmunk his warren were gathered around with narrowed eyes. "I don't trust him."

"When one claims to be from Frith let him play it out. If he's ah liar we gut 'im and give 'im to Yote. Iffin he's tellin' us the truth, we get praise from Frith. Either way I can't see a bad end in sight yet."

Crackle eyed the seer who gazed back steadily. "Alright...I trust you then Galie. You just make sure you actually tell us somethin before it happens."

The seer gave Crackle a huff but nodded and soon hopped over to the group to talk while Crackle kept to himself. Taking a second to eye the chipmunk, he soon started grooming at his face and ears, brushing his fur back from around his face, smoothing it out. He hummed a little song like Oasis used to make him sing when he was nothing but a kit.

    "Wash your face,
    Tuck your ears.
And you'll live a hundred years.
    Fluff your fur,
    Straighten your tail,
    And your courage'll never fail.
The rabbits with the cleanest coats
Are the finest ones we know.
And one ol' day you'll be the Rah!
Then they'll know how fine you are!"

The song made him relax a bit and he settled down with one last stroke of his ears as he glanced up at the sky. No predators so far. Good. He wasn't sure he could focus on their new...denmate and outrun anything like this. But now that he groomed himself a bit he felt better. Mood improving he hadn't realized someone had settled next to him until he turned around and saw the bright sea blue of Ombre's eyes watching him curiously.

"What was that?" She asked him curiously and the Chief Rabbit's ears lay back at being discovered singing such a silly rhyme.

"Ah ol song my mother used to sing to get us to groom. She always said we were fine rabbits and should learn to like it," He chuckled in embarrassment though Ombre didn't laugh, and instead sat down beside him. She didn't say much else and that suited Crackle just fine. It was nice to just sit together while this mess slowly tried to sort itself out.

With the guest settled and the warren members calmed for the time being, Igetis-rah could breathe a little sigh of relief and think about getting back on the warren's schedule for the day. He waited patiently for the return of Bittersweet as he sat keeping an eye on his warren mates. Myrtia had convinced Lupin for a rare play session and the oreo-colored buck couldn't help but smile as he watched the two romp around the small hills like young rabbits. Dynami and her sister Mamaro, the warren's newest addition, seemed to be sitting farther away from the rest of the group while they most likely were catching up on lost time. Siopi took his usual place on Igetis-rah's side, lying down this time as he too kept a wary eye out for Bittersweet.

After what seemed like forever for the two silent males, Bittersweet emerged from the burrow without the presence of the Emmisary. Squinting momentarily as her eyes adjusted to the light above ground, the doe took in a steadying breath. She hadn't known what to think about Siopi's reaction to the stranger, and wasn't sure if it bothered her or not. She supposed that could be decided later; there was work to do now. The fawn colored doe made her way toward the Rah and Siopi, both of which were looking at her, and delivered their guest's request.

"He is tired after such a long journey," the doe stated to Igetis-rah, doing her best to avoid the pair of golden eyes that belonged to Siopi as she talked. "He will stay in the burrow and settle in, but he does have a request for us, if that is okay."

"What is his request?" Igetis-rah asked, lifting his ears in interest and suspicion.

Bittersweet glanced at the expression of Siopi before dropping her gaze to the ground, needing to concentrate on her words. "His request is that we go and gather him some grass for him to eat. He is quite hungry." The doe took in another shaky breath as she attempted to ground herself.

The rah nodded and ordered for the warren members to gather round. "We need to go and collect grass to accommodate our guest. I need Siopi and Dynami to stay behind and keep an eye on the burrow while the rest of you come with me," his emerald eyes scanned the line of rabbits while he talked. "We will travel to the fields for the grass as a larger group, then I want Bittersweet to take Lupin and Mamaro with her to collect seeds and other things that our guest will like. As for Myrtia, I need you to stay with me and help me with something. Any questions?"

None of the rabbits seemed to have any formal questions about their new task for the day, though no one besides Myrtia was excited about it. Their rumbling stomachs would soon be filled, but their normal duties would have to be put on hold for at least a little while- seemingly for as long as they were playing host to their guest. The group made their way to the field, Myrtia singing a song to the group about friendship and what a great thing it was, while Lupin and Mamaro talked among themselves about being new in the warren. Bittersweet was silent as she kept close to Igetis-rah, which was typically uncharacteristic of the doe.

"Are you alright?" Igetis-rah asked, making conversation to make their journey seem shorter.

"I don't know what to think," she said honestly, not seeing the point of lying or trying to hide the truth from her leader. He seemed to have a way of finding out the truth eventually anyways so it was easier to simply come clean right away.

Igetis-rah gave her a confused look. "Don't know what you think about what?" He asked in a concerned yet casual tone as he turned his head to watch the path in front of them. "About our guest? Or having to play host...? You seemed excited about it earlier."

Bittersweet shook her head. "No, just..." the doe took another breath while they walked, grateful for him to have looked away. "I just don't know what to think about how he reacted to it, that's all." She felt her cheeks redden slightly at the words.

"Siopi?" Igetis-rah asked, not looking back at the doe out of respect for her wanting privacy. "I have a feeling that he felt similarly to the guest that I did, but he just made his feelings more known than I."

"You don't trust him either?" She asked, not understanding at first. "Oh, that's right. You were alone for a long while and didn't really celebrate the festivals... Do you think Siopi was alone for a while too? Or do you think he just doesn't trust the Frith's Emmisary....?" she let her voice trail off as the group came to a stop in order to gather the grass for the Emmisary.

"What I think," Igetis-rah stated, making eye contact with the doe. "I think that Siopi has been through a lot in his young life- to have gone through an injury so severe as to render him mute and all- he might not have any memory of the festivals, or might not have even celebrated them in the past. There are lots of reasons for him to possibly react the way that he did, although the only one that would truly be able to answer them is him. But as I said, his mind could very well be hiding the truth or the memories from him."

Bittersweet fell silent as the two collected grass for the chipmunk. He wasn't sure, but Igetis-rah thought he saw the doe's eyes well with a few tears. He decided to leave her be with her thoughts. When she was ready to talk more she would ask- she always did.

Prompt piece:

(The problem is I have only one rabbit ;w;)

Shadow-Rah stared warily at the chipmunk. During her experience in her warren's territory, she had learned to be cautious of any contact between another creature and herself. And to be honest, she hadn't really ever met a chipmunk, not face-to-face. The closest she had ever gotten to one was watching from a distance, and she had always thought they were a bit strange.

"No," she said, unamused. "There's just me." She flicked her long ears back thoughtfully as the chipmunk waited patiently for an answer. After a moment, she decided to give them a shot, but also chose to be indifferent to the chipmunk. Her voice came out calm but firm. "I've dug out a new den a while ago in case I get any visitors; you can stay there for now. Let me know if you need anything."

They seemed a little offended, but she had already turned her back to them and could not tell for sure. She hopped away into her own den as the chipmunk followed her into the tunnel. Let them find their own den. She wasn't quite sure what she thought of the chipmunk, but she was rather glad that someone was staying with her, even for a while. She could not quite remember the last time she had met a truly sincere rabbit. Her nose twitched. Company was good. She would be tolerant of them, that's for sure, and nothing much more than that. Don't let them grow on you, she scolded herself. Always be suspicious of such matters. Chipmunks!

Suppose the thing was lying to her? What if they weren't the Emissary? Then they'd be no better than the other scoundrels she had to deal with. She squeezed her eyes shut for a moment, thinking to herself. She wasn't even quite sure what this "festival" was all about. She was faintly aware of tales of the Festival of the Coming Sun, from when she was a young kit, though she had never celebrated it herself. And she didn't plan to do so anytime soon. The whole festival business sharpened her suspicion even further.

Should I let them stay? She wished that she could have someone with her to help her make difficult choices like these. It took too much thinking, and too much thinking gave her horrible headaches. I don't have much to lose, really... Her eyes flickered back open, a startling silver flare to them. Her final decision was to let them stay. Is this the right choice? She was lonely, and she was tired of being lonely. Choices lead to actions, and actions lead to trouble... The thought of companionship outweighed the possibility of them not being the Emissary, or even not knowing what the festival was. They seemed nice enough... weren't they?

See how they do, she thought to herself sleepily as night fell. Watch and see if they can be trusted. And if they can't...

The trail of thought never finished as she drowsily nodded off to sleep.
