When water first fell upon the world, it
showered the forests, droplets rolling over
glistening green leaves; it fell onto mountain
tops forming an uninterrupted, soft blanket of
snow; it fell into clear rivers making them swell
with fish. The world was bright and new. The
world was green. The water was the mother’s
greatest gift to her world, it gave the world life.
The water was soft but unyielding, gentle but
wild, nourishing but deadly.

░░░░░░░░░░░░When man came to the world, he took the
water and claimed it as his own. He bent the
seas to his will and took power from the rivers.
Man spoilt the water. He poisoned it until it no
longer ran clear. Under the sea a great rot took
hold, the poison like a cancer destroyed the reef
where the fish once lived. The pink, purple and
orange turned a deathly grey. Man was not done,
he spilt oil on the water, grounding the birds. He
emptied the sky of their wonderful plumage, and
he still was not done. He choked the water with a
weapon called plastic. He snuffed out the life
water had brought to the world, and man sat back
in his high, grey tower, he looked over the world
he had painted dead grey, he was proud of his
work and named it ‘society’.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxWhen the mother awoke, she saw the corpse of her
world. She looked for the rainforests and the
snow-capped mountains, she looked for clear rivers
and the life teeming ocean. She could not recognise
the place before her. The mother wept. She
mourned the tranquil Eden she had cared for and
tended.

Her tears overflowed and dropped to the earth, and
up sprang a sapling, who would protect the waters.
From the purest of water up grew Anahita, the
guardian of rivers, the oceans and rain. She was the
one who could overturn man’s work and bring back
green Eden again.
