she visited frequently afterwards, bringing gifts
of leaves and berries to your harp. she seemed
to enjoy hearing you play, as it was only then
that the two of you could speak.
“what did you do today?” you asked.
“wait for you to remember.”
“remember what?”
“never mind. it’s nothing.”
the conversations were frustrating sometimes,
but xiang was endearing. she had a personality.
she was like your girlfriend.
... except you didn’t have a girlfriend in this life.
you had nobody.
[ 🍂 ]
you often dreamt of a large massacre. no
matter how many times you relived this
dream, everyone died. your family, your
friends, your girlfriend. everyone.
but that wasn’t all. you recalled binding her
spirit to something to prevent it from being
shattered to pieces. you made a promise
you couldn’t keep ... and the world went
black.
your memory was terrible, but this time, for
some reason, you remembered every detail
from that dream.
it was then that you realized who xiang was.
the dream wasn’t just a dream; it was also
your past.
[ 🍂 ]
when you saw her again, you apologized. she
seemed conflicted, and played a plea for you.
“xia lin, i’m here. don’t leave me behind again.”
“i won’t,” you promised. this time, you
intended to keep it. “i’m sorry to have kept
you waiting.”

the first time you met her was before the summer
solstice, when you were playing a greeting for the
spirits in the forest. your paws glided across the
strings of your harp, when a little wren responded.
“hello!”
you had paused. the small bird plucked out her
greeting with her beak, and when she had your
attention, she continued.
“do you remember me?”
you frowned and shook your head. you were trying
to communicate with the spirits of the deceased in
order to exorcise them. this forest was the site of a
bloodbath, and you’ve sent many spirits peacefully
to the afterlife. however, you haven’t encountered
any in some time.
... yet, animal spirits weren’t like kalon spirits.
their language was different, so how did this wren
understand?
“what's your name?” you played, hoping for a clue.
the wren perched on top of your harp quietly, before
plucking out a chord.
“give me one.”
how demanding. nevertheless, you acquiesced with
the wren’s wishes.
“then, you’ll be xiang. oak suits you, after all.”
[ 🍂 ]
the second time you met her, it was during the
summer solstice, and you were singing to ease a
particularly ferocious spirit. you had managed to
exorcise the spirit without too much trouble, yet
she seemed uneasy. she twittered loudly, but with-
out the precise notes of your harp, you had no way
of understanding her.
frustrated, she then left in a hurry. you didn’t see
xiang for a few days after that.
... strange. the way xiang had gotten upset
reminded you of someone you might've known
before.

she doesn't visit anymore. she stays with you instead, just like how it was before.
even if she's a bird now.
