Kalon Name: Oak
Prompt (499/500):
Oaks family only ate what they could find or hunt. It was better than sponsoring big business, and was “non-GMO”.
Eggs were a delicacy. They didn’t raise chickens- they looked for nests. Finding quail eggs was uncommon, let alone any other bird eggs.
Oak found herself climbing the seventh tree, hoping this nest would be more promising. A small nest on a low branch, surrounding three baby wrens. It was a shame, but they were cute.
When they saw Oak, they began to chirp loudly, moving away from her. One of them fell out of the nest and onto the ground. Oak jumped from the tree and tried to save it, putting it back in the nest.
She waited. Once the mother came, she fed two chicks and pushed the third from the nest. Oak was ready, catching the small creature. It’s mother had rejected it because of Oaks scent.
The bird still seemed frightened, but mostly cold and hungry. Oak went back home, forgetting the egg mission, and saw her parents facing her.
“Did you bring eggs?” Her moms voice rang out.
“No.”
“Oak, whats that?” Her dad tried to wrestle the bird away, but Oak was faster.
“It’s a chick. I rescued it.”
“...for food?” Her father was unamused.
“N-no... I want it.”
“We cant keep birds as pets.” Her mother reasoned.
Oak shook her head and went back outside, holding the chick close.
She gathered sticks, attempting to weave a temporary nest with it. While scratching at the ground, she found worms for the wren to eat.
After two hours, Oak made something resembling a nest. She went home, and stuck it on her nightstand from an open window in her room, placing the wren down gently.
She went in through the front door, finding her mother waiting there.
“Where’s the bird?” She asked.
“I put it back.”
“The mother shouldn’t accept it!”
“It’s got siblings. I’m sure my scent will be masked.”
With that she went into her room.
For weeks this is how Oak kept Wren, anytime her parents would walk in, she'd put the bird in her hair or tail and hide it.
Finally though, Wren learned to fly. When this happened, Oak let her go.
Every day, Oak had gone outside, listening to the whistles and chirps of wrens. She tried to mimic them, memorize them. It was hard, but it was important.
One day she mimicked a mating call, a year after Wren left. The call attracted a small wren that kept its distance when it saw there was no suiter. It slowly hopped over, until it flew at Oak, hiding in her hair.
No other wren ever approached her, let alone hide in her hair. She had really called back Wren.
Oak smiled and went back home. There, Wren left, but this time, began nesting on the roof.
Oak still went outside everyday, mimicking the wrens- and with Wrens help, it was nice. She had learned to (sloppily) speak wren.
