"What a curious little mare."
Alys Vanderhiem, a 26 year old woman watched the mare fidget around the stage in which she was being roughly handled. The small mare obeyed, however it was clear she didn't want to be here. Her head was held up high with her ears set low to her head. Her eyes were wild, searching for any good faces in the crowd. She looked as if she could just up and run at any moment. Anything looked like it could set her off.
"Pretty lil' thing, eh?"
Alys turned her head towards an old woman who was smiling at her. She mustered a small smile to her own face in order to be polite. If it were one thing Alys learned in her years of being a merchant, it was that old people were either very friendly or really mean.
"Yes, she really is. I'm surprised no one's trying to get her. She'd make a fine show horse with that coat."
The old woman chuckled sadly, prompting Alys to stare at her in confusion. Did she know something she didn't?
"Poor dear, she's too much of a spookish mare. That's why she's been back here so many times. She's gained such a reputation that people have stopped wasting money on her."
Alys frowned and turned her gaze towards the mare being trotted up and down the walk. People were buzzing about, several watching the appaloosa. No one raised a hand for bids, though. She knew what happened to horses who came back far too many times. No one takes interest anymore and they end up either being dinner on someone's table or left to rot in a lonely stall. At least, that's the most common rumor about these types of places.
The man had been leading the mare back and forth for about ten minutes now. He looked tired and frankly, he looked frustrated. Alys looked to her right, searching for a sign that told her of the mare's price. 250 Icho. Still a little pricy, but certainly not as much as some of the other horses present at the auction.
She was snapped out of her thoughts when a voice broke through. It was the mare's handler and he looked like he was at his wits end. She realized that the auction was ending and still, none bid on her.
"Going once...going twice..."
She made a split second decision. Her hand shot up.
"300!"
Her shout earned herself some looks. Some surprise, some shock, but others were pity. The old lady beside her watched her with wide eyes. She placed a frail hand on her arm.
"Dear, that mare won't get you far. You're wasting your money.
"Believe me, I know what I'm doing ma'am."
She only nodded to her with a tight lipped smile.She withdrew her hand and hobbled off.
"300! Next highest bid is 350! Going once. Going twice! Sold to this young lady!"
Alys walked up confidently and placed the amount of Icho that was due. She took the mare with a curt nod.
"She got a name?"
"No. Never had one. Up to you."
With a hum of disapproval, Alys thanked the man and walked off with her. She looked back at the mare, watching how she held her head and eyed her with doubt and nervousness. She had plenty of personality, but no name. Nothing could spring up into Alys' mind.
That is, until she felt water begin to fall on her head. She looked up. At first, they were unnoticable. But they began to grow bigger and fall faster. Fearing that even rain would spook the mare, Alys stopped. She looked back, expecting to see wild eyes filled with fear and ears pinned her head.
Instead, it was a completely different horse. A new calmness appeared to have taken over her. The rain kept falling and they kept standing there. Stock still. Alys smiled.
Rain. What a perfect day for rain.

I ride horses whenever I'm able, and have been doing sso for a long time!
