When Phillie was younger, people would ask him his favorite fruit, in which he always replied, "cherries, of course!" He always loved the sweet and tart taste of the juicy little fruit, but now that he is older, he realized that he has been entirely wrong.
"How can one be wrong about their favorite fruit?" One may ask, but it's fairly simple, Phillie just hasn't seen the importance of apples to him just yet.
In almost every single one of his good childhood memories, there were apples. Growing the back yard, helping cut them up with his best friend, but most importantly, how he and his grandmother ate them together.
Phillie came from a pretty broken home, but whenever he was with his granny, the hurt and sadness all melted away with a single bite of an apple as he sat next to his granny while they joked and had fun. Granny always had a bunch of different apples that were grown locally, and they ate them all in different ways such as salted green apples, caramel and fry shaped golden delishes, peanutbutter and macintoshs, and so on!
As Phillie has grown older, he realized that his comfort that he found with his granny, was just a bite away with an apple when his parents far away from his grandmother. Sure, it wasn't the same as eating them on the porch on a hot summer day with his granny, but it was good enough for him until he would eventually moved back to live with her once he was a teenager.
Unfortunately, an apple a day, doesn't keep the doctor away... when Phillie was about to turn 16, his granny got very ill. He noticed that she couldn't walk out into the heat like she used to to help pick apples with him, but it all turned to the worst. A few days before Valentines day, and just a month before his 16th birthday, his granny has passed away. Years later, he would only then realized the importance of apples and all their memories. To this day, he still likes to eat an apple on the porch on a hot summer day with an extra apple to his side

Louie shivered as he heard the crowd cheering just outside, adjusting his vest once again. His ukulele was hanging loosely from a strap on his neck, vibrant pink designs flowing around the strings. Louie’s heart raced as the announcer came back over the microphone, her voice blurring in and out of his attention. The last act came back through the stage door, cheering as they walked down the steps and back into the rehearsal room. Louie anxiously fidgeted with the frayed ends of his scarf as he tiptoed up the stage steps, stopping just before the door. Now he could hear the announcer clearly, her overly excited tone making the butterflies in his stomach twirl.

Louie took in one last panicked breath before bursting through the door, quickly pacing to the middle of the stage. The audience grew completely quiet as he turned to face them, cheeks becoming an even darker shade of pink. He reached up to grab the microphone, fumbling and watching in panic as it toppled over and banged on the floor. The crowd shouted and covered their ears as the microphone screeched into life. Louie stood, paws wrapped tightly around his ukulele as the crowd began to boo. As if he were in a movie, fruits and vegetables began to fly out of the crowds’ hands, smashing against the stage. A tomato smacked into Louie’s forehead, exploding into a mess. The crowd cheered then, laughter echoing through the gymnasium. The announcer was speaking loudly over the mic, but she was drowned out by the crowd. Louie began to cry, running off of the stage while wiping the tomato off of his face. Louie made it out of the rehearsal room and down into the main gymnasium, the audience too busy to notice him. His parents ran up to meet him, but he stopped before they reached him.

I told you I couldn’t do it! I-I told-

New tears fell down his cheeks, and as his parents reached out he slung his ukulele over his head and slammed it into the ground. It shattered with a loud noise, finally gathering the crowds’ attention. Silence replaced the chaos as Louie ran out of the gymnasium, his mother leaning down to shift through her son’s destroyed ukulele.

3 weeks later

Louie’s mother called him from the kitchen, her voice sounding oddly happy. Louie trotted down from his bedroom, curiosity peaking in his eyes. He stopped midway into the kitchen as he saw the ukulele sitting on the table. His mother smiled, waving him down the stairs. He slowly walked into the kitchen, gingerly picking up the ukulele. It was a pastel green color, vibrant pink designs flowing around the strings. And a small little watermelon was painted onto the front, just like his old one. His tears slipped onto the watermelon, a laugh bubbling from his throat.

Like a spider monkey, he easily climbed up the branch to the ripest yellow pitaya on the branch. The air was warm but not in an invading way, and a cool breeze glided through the rain-forest; it felt so calm yet so alive. Luis reached the highest but most stable branch and smacked the upper branches with his stick, sending large, plump pitaya raining to the ground. His sister, who was also a good climber, waited the at the bottom with her woven basket to pick them.

"Come on, I think there's some guavas and mangoes down by the river, where Padre said!"

Nita grew up in the Philippines on the island

Nita's love of coconuts followed her to the USA,
it's incorporated into her adult life as part of
her health and beauty routine. Every evening she
applies a thick slick of coconut oil to soften, and
lengthen her dark lashes. She also keeps a good
stock of coconut water to refresh her after her
intense workouts. The sweet, low-calorie drink
reminds her of home. Crunchy, fresh coconut
pieces are a great healthy alternative to many
snacks. Nenita often grabs a load to satisfy late
night cravings. Coconuts are an incredibly
versatile fruit. They are a key ingredient
in many delicious fresh foods and drinks.
Including Nita's favourite cocktail: the
pina-colada. She prefers it served in a coconut
shell with a bright, paper umbrella and bold,
patterned straw. Nita finds every part of the
coconut delicious: she uses the milk in curries
when she cooks for the people closest to her;
She drinks the water to look after her body and
she uses the cream in cocktails to treat herself.
