"Four eyes!"
"Monster!"
"Freak!"
I'd heard it all. They loved to torment me simply because I looked abnormal. If I had been boring, plain, then they never would have cared enough to mock me. But alas, I was doomed to be different. I remember dreaming that I was ordinary. I remember the disappointment I'd feel when I'd wake up again.
The bullies weren't even the worst of the bunch. There were others who would come to me with fake smiles and empty compliments. They'd tell me that I was beautiful, and that they wanted to be my friend. I fell for it once, but never again. All they wanted was the chance to tell the world that they were friends with someone like me, whatever I was.
What pained me the most in both cases was that they never looked past my outwards appearance. They'd laugh at my looks, not not personality. They'd try and be my friend because of my looks, not my personality. I was smart. I was clever. I was so much more than a strange looking pillowtail. Why couldn't they see that?
Looking back at my childhood misery, I can't help but let out a laugh. Don't get me wrong, it was not a fun time. But now, looking back at it, I realize that everything turned out okay. Right now, I'm working an internship at a planetarium. I'm also studying astronomy. I am so much more than a strange looking pillowtail, and anyone with half a brain can see it.
