I made a pact.

I made a promise.

Smoke curls like rain dripped up her cheekbones, tobacco sweet on moonlit lips. Crackling silence bit from the police scanner, some kind of waiting game.

Seline’s polished fingers rested along the self-cocking crossbow across her lap, focus tapped somewhere out in the cityscape below as wind ushered her smoke on, off the worn balcony, into the night.

Seline grew up in a retaken community, a part of this dystopian landscape that never got all the upgrades of the metropolis it eventually mingled with. The city was still built like it was 2050, barely kept up enough to consider itself livable. Think shantytown. Think squalor.

Money was a foreign thing, but there was fortune to be made looting. If you didn’t get caught. She’d lost a lot of friends to the police, taken down just inches from the safety of their compound. So she made a pact. She listens. She waits. She watches over the routes. No more lives lost. No more friends—family—who don’t make it back. And that was a promise.

The scanner broke to life, muffled codes like venom on the air. This was it. Stand. Aim. Ready. Waiting.

Roland and her sister, Vega, are one of the hundreds that survived the Breakout. The Breakout wiped out everyone on the planet who didn't get the injection. Once the dust settled, Roland and Vega took action, forming a group of any survivors that were found. Ro became leader of the Outlanders, one of the few groups of survivors, whereas Vega split off to form a band of raiders, the Valdus. This caused the two to butt heads quite often, as they're alliances waver for the needs of their people.

Ro works to put people in line, to keep justice, and discipline the those who don't wish to follow the rules. Disloyalty is punished with banishment to the radiation zones. However, Roland didn't used to be this strict. She used to be adventurous, and actually pretty rowdy, always making jokes at terrible times. But after years of trying to keep the Outlanders together, she had to change. Taking authority turned her cold, but she managed to keep her slick tongue. She does what she thinks is right for her people, but listens and compromises with them when needed. New comers earn her trust, sometimes getting their hands dirty to do it.

Quiet. It was quiet here. That was why he liked it.

It was true, sound tended to echo in the lofty halls, bouncing off high ceilings and stone floor. But the patrons paid extra reverence to sanctity of the silence here, moving softly and slowly to avoid anything louder than the shuffle of a page being turned. Canto enjoyed old places with ingrained rules and customs. Everyone just knew to be quiet in a library.

The books filled the space. Shelves in rows, more than twice as high as he was tall, set into walls and curved around corners, taking up three stories and reaching the vaulted ceilings of the open rooms. It was like a cathedral, a religion of knowledge, full of stories centuries old. If one was only setting foot in the place for their first time, it would be easy to be lost amongst the mazes of shelves and stacks of literature.

It was the perfect home for him. He picked a small tome and opened to a random page, running his fingers over the parchment and tasting the ink as he went. When he placed it back in it's spot, the paper was entirely blank...

xenia doesn't care about consequences. if she feels like dumping coffee on the annoying teacher's head, then she'll go ahead and do it. if she feels like driving without a license through the city at 2am with friends while puffing on cigarettes, then she will. xenia's the kind of girl who's always snapping gum and making sarcastic comments, and is the chilliest person around. and although she constantly gets in trouble with the school and the law, she always manages to charm her way out of trouble. it also might help that's she's been top of the school her entire life.
xenia's kinda friendly to most, but she tends to hold on to just a handful of friends. she often skips school and walks to the golden hour, a café near her school, with a group of her friends. they'll take chairs and push all them around two tables and drink coffee mixed with redbull and laugh at stupid things. and the employees don't care since xenia knows all them.
it might be stupid to live like this, not caring, but whatever.

"you will die." the pronouncement was careless, indifferent. there was no teeth in her words, but this made it all the worse.

the king knelt at her feet, his pride in ruins around him. silence stretched out as each party waited for the other to speak.
Marie wore her silence as a shroud. she did not intend to soften her words.

the king, frustrated, grinded out- "please. i offer you blood for your inkwell; help me save this country. i will give gold, power. whatever you wish."

Marie could see it tore him apart to beg. humming, she considered his offer. "your blood is needed for my spells you seek, yes. but if you are here, you know i do not trade in wealth. you will owe me a life's debt."

the king knew trading with devils was dangerous. and she, known as Bloodless Marie, was the worst of them all, who collected secrets and debts and blood. it bound you to the mercy of her words. he placed a vial before her, a silent agreement.

Marie smiles, and tips it into her inkwell. the blood glitters like her eyes, as she dips in a quill and begins to write.

Round 2: She used to dream of holding light in her hands, weaving spells like silks, and creating glimmering stars in her own cauldron, a recipe for perfection. She used to dream of bottling constellations in jars, wearing stardust in her hair. She used to dream she was someone big, important, one-of-a-kind, and irreplaceable.

She used to dream because she was none of those things.

The stars now decorate her walls, she cooks with only the brightest suns, and what comes of her cauldron are glittering jewels of every color and shape. She leaves diamond dust in her wake and shimmering all over her hair. Where she was born but a peasant is no matter now, not with the magic she creates.

It is wondrous, full of dreams, and light, and brightness (sweetness and spice and everything nice) and endless possibilities that she alone can create.

But she has no dreams now: she has everything she's ever wanted. When the someone calls for her aid, Ataashi has never done anything but the best . But that's where her downfall is.

She can't go beyond her best. Her possibilities may be endless but her limits, they...

They crush her like stones.

I stare at the setting sun, feeling nothing, the sky is painted with vibrant pinks and oranges, the sea is dark, and it will become darker as the day ends, so dark that it’s almost black. A warm breeze weaves its way through my hair, I am conscious of the harsh surface of rock under my soft feet, but I don’t tread carefully as I slowly move towards the cliff edge. I glance behind me, my pursuer not that far behind, I smirk and I jump. The air glides against my skin, I plummet into the sea.

Before I even step a foot inside, Ivy shrieks ‘You’re soaking wet!’ she’s tense, she’s taken that fall once, and doesn’t like the idea of me doing the same over and over. She groans in frustration, and storms out of the way, I walk in and stare at myself in the old mirror. It needs to be polished. My cheek still feels hot; I cut it on the way down. I slowly open my hand and stare down at the key that I stole, I held it so tightly that it created indentations in my skin, I smile, I’d got what I wanted.

I have always felt a connection towards flowers. Since i was a kid i spent most of my time in our garden, tending the flowers and caring for the creatures living inside it.

Other kalons often scared me and as i grew up all alone i never knew how to approach them.
As a solution i started to confess my emotions through the language of flowers, i gifted bouquets to everyone i liked or just wanted to thank for something and while i knew that these gifts made them happy i still felt alone.

No one actually knew me, they just knew what i did and appreciated my work. Leaving my garden felt wrong and so i didn't.
Over the years my garden grew, i felt at home and i loved every corner of this place.

I know that the other kalons in the village started calling me the "Gardens Guardian" but i turned into a myth before i could even understand what that would mean for me.
The garden was my home and i turned into a part of it, one that was not allowed to leave. Ever.
