happy (early) new year everyone!

sorry you haven't seen much of me in the past month(s), school has kept me busy :'(
but in my religions class i recently did a project about Shintoism and learned about their annual new year shrine visits called hatsumode where they can buy omamori (amulets) and receive omikuji (fortune telling strips), which I thought was very neat!

for this contest you can choose to do one of two things. if you're feeling up to it you can do both but only one is required c:
1. tell me what their lucky item is- it doesn't have to be an omamori, you can also just pick an image or draw an item/thing that they own. feel free to include why this is their lucky item and why it means so much to them!
2. tell me what their fortune strip says about their luck for the next year! it can say whatever you want, whether you make it sad or funny, the choice is yours. also feel free to include their reaction- this can be in writing or drawing format.

the significance of the cherry blossom tree
in japanese culture goes back hundreds of
years. in their country, the cherry blossom
represents the fragility and the beauty of
life. it's a reminder that life is almost
overwhelmingly beautiful but that it
is also tragically short.

hiroshi's grandmother passed this
necklace down to her just before
her death. the real sakura blossom
flower, precisely cast in resin, has
brought luck to her family for many
generations and more to come.

cherry blossoms are revered with
ceremonial receptions called
hanami and symbolized as an
omen of good fortune, an emblem
of love and affection, as well as
an enduring metaphor for the
fleeting nature of mortality.

hiroshi believes that with the
prized, old, silver necklace,
she can live a happy life just
like her ancestors. she says
that the happy souls of her
family live on in the gentle
petals and keep her safe, as
she carries it close to her
heart.

There is a shrine in Tokyo that offers custom made omamori charms, with special patterns for special wishes. Chouko has one, and she considers it her lucky item. She keeps it in her pocket at all times.

Her wish was a strange one - she wished for the stars to be extra bright. An astronomer's biggest pet peeve is when they can't see the stars. Even when her troubles have nothing to do with the night sky, she still feels like her omamori gives her luck.

It's comforting to be able to reach into your pocket and feel something special. Something one of a kind. Something just for you.
