Leilani's Day

Leilani watched the others of his clan from some higher branches that were tucked close to their parent trees. He had long ago given up the want to be a part of them, and was happy to be apart. He was both part of them, and other. That was okay. Some still judged him based solely upon the rumors they heard. Leilani no longer bothered with saukkos who had their minds made up about him before he could even speak. It was only an exercise in futility. That being said, there were a few in his clan he trusted and who's company he enjoyed.

The first was Autumn. The leaf-gold saukko was always getting into mischief with his friend Silvius, but he was kind, too. Whenever Silvius was working off part of his trouble for the clan (such as sitting guard duty or helping with the young ones), Autumn would seek him out. It wasn't because he had nothing better to do, and it took Leilani awhile to realize that. It was simply hard for Autumn to otherwise spend time with him. SIlvius had a good heart, but, he was too swayed by the rumors. Whenever he wasn't in trouble, Silvius was attached to Autumn at the hip.

From his perch, Leilani could see most of the clan spread out below him going about their daily activities. He heard a rustle of branches and their scent told him who it was before he could see who was paying him a visit. Autumn gracefully stepped onto the adjacent branch and sat next to Leilani.

"Silvius doing community service again?" he asked.

Autumn forced down a laugh, unsuccessfully, "Yeah. It beats having him try to hunt. The only thing he can reliably catch is trouble!"

Leilani laughed, because it was true. Silvius was better suited to doing something working with other saukkos than going out and hunting. Once he was given that task to make up for some of his shenanigans. To say it didn't end well would be an extreme understatement. Autumn shifted his weight, and Leilani could tell he wanted to say something.

"What's bothering you?" he asked.

"I want to spend more time with you. You're my friend, and I'm tired of being forced to sneak around because Silvius can't understand that there's more to you than all the rumors. I wish he would just give you a chance..." Autumn trailed off.

"When does his punishment end?" asked Leilani.

"I wouldn't call it a punishment, considering he likes being around and helping kits, but, sometime this afternoon, I think?" said Autumn.

Leilani thought over his answer again before responding, "I'll go with you."

Autumn looked over at his friend, shocked. He stumbled a bit over his words, but then grinned. He looked back out over the clan, and couldn't stop grinning. Autumn was hungry, so Leilani invited him to his home for a late breakfast.

"Tell me, do you still keep it by your den?" Autumn asked.

"Yes and no, and she's not an 'it', Autumn. She usually comes around feeding time, or when it's just me. She takes off the moment someone unfamiliar comes by, and to her, that's most saukko," he said.

Autumn just nodded his head and tried to hide the fear as he looked in to the shadows, trying to see if the monster was still there despite what Leilani had said. He saw no large monster-shaped shadow, or the reflections off any monster eyes. Leilani noticed his friend peering into the shadows, but repressed the laughter at his friend's silliness. They don't hide in the shadows, they hide in plain sight, he thought.

Just as he thought, she was gone when they came to his den at the edge of the grove. To Autumn, the trees looked more sinister this far from the clan's main grove. Leilani just thought of it as home; with a paw in each world. Autumn couldn't help but chuckle when he saw the new skeletons sitting out to dry; the other saukko thought Leilani hunted those animals himself, when it couldn't be further from the truth. The reality was that Leilani studied the remains of the forest around them, and had a wealth of knowledge abut the various animals they shared the forest with. Including the monsters.

Autumn looked again, and saw no sign of her. Leilani wasn't bothered, she'd come back when Autumn left. She was probably out hunting snakes. They went inside his den and Leilani pulled out some food for Autumn. As they ate they talked about the various news going around the clan, and some further off. Towards the end Leilani heard a familiar clicking. Autumn didn't notice it, and as soon as he was done talking he went outside, only to come running back in. He ran to Leilani and did his best to hide behind him.

Autumn whispered urgently to Leilani, "there is a monster out there. Leilani, what're we going to do?"

Leilani poked his head out of his den and saw Aria. She looked at him inquisitively from her perch and let out another series of clicks while she flicked her tail. Leilani looked behind him and saw Autumn coming out of his den as slowly as possible.

"She won't hurt you, not intentionally anyways. I'm sure she remembers you from when she was a cub, otherwise, she'd probably be hiding still," he said.

Her kind were intelligent, like them. He was sure she understood him when he spoke, but, due to their differing anatomies, she couldn't make the same sounds to talk back to him. He still remembered the day he found the little monster cub abandoned on the forest floor. She was only a week old, at best. He had no clue what to feed her, because he couldn't just leave her there. Somehow, he managed to keep her alive the first week. A week became two, then three. During this time he had ignored all of Autumn's requests for a visit, because he didn't want word that he was keeping a monster as a pet to get out. Fed up with his friend ignoring him, Autumn came by for a visit, and the rest was history.

Now, looking at her, he could understand why Autumn was so scared. Her tusks glimmered in the light, and her claws were very visibly sharp. She wasn't the fluffy cub he had last seen, she was a monster to him. Leilani was sad that Autumn was terrified of her, but he understood. It took a half of coaxing both of them to get Autumn to go up to Aria. First he had to get her down from her perch, then get autumn back out from his den. Eventually they were within easy reach of each other. Autumn giving hr a suspicious look, and Aria doing her best to not look threatening.

All too soon it was time to go back to the main clan area and pick up SIlvius. Leilani could feel Aria watching him leave. Silvius was surprised to see him, and extremely wary, but they went to Autumn's family den. Leilani was nervous, and knew his very public appearance would spark more rumors, but he stopped caring what they thought long ago. Eventually, SIlvius came around, and acted as if he had never been cautious or suspicious of Leilani. He rough-housed with him, something that Leilani had little experience with.

Autumn laughed at their antics. Leilani looked outside, and saw the sun starting to set. He said his goodbyes, and went home quietly. Or at least, he tried. Someone was following him home. The fur on his neck kept prickling as he tried to pick up his pace through the branch-paths. Suddenly he heard a ferocious snarl and saw Aria leap down from a branch. He didn't recognize the other saukko, who very quickly went running the other direction. Aria looked as if she had melted back into the shadows. He knew she'd be waiting for him at home. She was.


About

Leilani is a bit of a pariah inside his clan. He lives on the outskirts of the clan's grove. His den is located inside a very large tree. His den was once a bird's nest that he then enlarged carefully for his purposes. As a cub he was always fascinated with the workings of the forest, and tended a small garden. Eventually gardening became studying the animal and insect-life. He often collects feathers, scales, shed skins from snakes, and other items he can use to differentiate between different species and assess their health. If he can find a complete one, he also keeps skeletons.

He keeps his collections inside a hollow on the tree opposite where his den faces, and in a protected hollow on top where the rest of the branches fork. He often goes up there to study his finds because the light there is better. As an adolescent he found a young "monster" cub. He suspects she was abandoned due to her particularly bright markings. Initially he was wary of keeping her, but soon found out how intelligent these monsters really were, and has come to see them as just another creature sharing their woods.

Entry:
One who respects life, this Saukko spends their free time wandering around the forest. They collect the skulls of deceased animals and clean them up. They collect skulls much like a taxidermist. Sometimes they will also tan pelts and keep them as well. Many could find this behavior repulsive, but he quite enjoys it and does it regardless. No matter what anyone says.
