"Take this way, Larkwhisker. As for you..." Rainfall continued, yet Briarfur hardly noticed. He was incredibly excited. This was his first real battle as a warrior - a fox! They had just scented one, and were about to confront it.

"And you, Briarfur. Just follow me. Don't be a fool."

What‽ A fool? He had a chance to prove himself, and of course his former mentor would ruin it... "A fool‽ What do you mean-" he was quickly shut up by Larkwhisker's piercing glare. He acts like I'm still an apprentice...

"And you stay out!" Briarfur slammed the old fox's muzzle, dislodging a tooth in the process. He could see Rainfall glare at him disapprovingly for it, but he didn't care. Noticing the fang, he bent down to grab it. It was slightly, for lack of better words and lack of sugarcoating, gross, but he didn't really care all the while. All that mattered was his trophy.

"I jumped in his way, saving his life - while I slashed fiercely at the fox's muzzle. It was young and fierce, but no match for me - it ran away, and I managed to grab this!" he proudly displayed his fang to the young tom he was conversing with.

"Wow! Really? I never would have thought you, of all cats..." He mewed.

"See? I may be Briarfur, but Thistlestar never really saw my true power!" He boasted.

"I guess she didn't! This is so cool, none of the other warriors bring anything like this... can I have it?" he said curiously.

"Sorry, I need it to prove a point," he responded, and when the other cat looked quizzically at him, he continued, "[-i]Er[/i]- I have yet to -uh show Thistlestar. Maybe after."

Thank StarClan he didn't ask any more questions! he thought. I have to show Cardinalblaze this. Once she sees this, she'll know that I'm not so puny! Heh, maybe I'll even give it to her... He scampered along to the place they met. "Cardinal! I got something great for you! Better than anything you could do!" Before the she-cat could respond, he dropped the fang at her feet.

"You can have it if you want. Not as weak as you thought, huh? I fought off a whole fox for this!"

It wasn't often that Ridgeclan interacted with other clans, so when it did happen it was something everyone wanted to go too. Deerclaw could remember when he was just an apprentice going to his first one and meeting someone he'd never forget.

Mud. Mud everywhere. Mud, clinging heavily to his underbelly, sticking to his paws, squelching between his claws. It was something that he did not like very much.

"Mud, mud, mud," Willow sang, sliding around in the marsh behind him. She, on the other paw, seemed to live for mud. He suspected that she couldn't live without it. He purred in amusement as she sunk down to her underbelly in a particularly soft patch of earth.

Marsh-frost finally seemed to loosen its freezing grip on the marsh. The heavy snow from a few sunrises ago had melted with the warmer weather, and prey was returning. His Clan was in high spirits of the warm weather to come - except there was one downside, besides the snowmelt turning everything to mud.

Willow would be leaving.

She'd arrived at their Clan just before marsh-frost, a few moons ago, as a trainee from ThistleClan. The snow and cold weather of marsh-frost had made the journey back incredibly difficult, so in the interest of their safety, she'd stayed in DeltaClan, she and her mentor waiting until warmer weather to travel back. During this time, they'd grown to be close friends - but now that the snow had melted, she'd be leaving tomorrow.

They seemed to be thinking the same thing about her departure, and earlier this morning, much to his protesting, Willow had dragged him out into the thawing marsh. Down the slick rocks of the gorge they skidded, with Willow's enthusiasm being the only thing urging him on, until they finally reached the bottom of the waterfall. Much to his surprise, she revealed a hidden cavern behind the cascading water, one that she'd discovered while exploring the territory on her own. As a final goodbye gift, the mud-loving apprentice had presented him with her proud creation - a pawful of mud with a glittering stone on top. He still remembered his breath catching when he cleaned the mud off the stone in the waterfall and watched the gorgeous stone shimmer in the light.

On their way back, he wondered anxiously what she'd think of his gift.

The mud made an odd slurping sound beneath his wide paws and he cringed. Mud. It wasn't something that he liked very much, especially when there were many rivers and streams in the marsh that he preferred. He didn't like doing risky things like running down the rocks of the gorge either, but after doing it with Willow, he perhaps felt a little braver. The waterfall had felt like heaven - icy water drumming on his back, slicing through his fur, washing away whatever mud was on his pelt. He should've known that the walk back would still bring much mud.

As they neared the camp, Willow finally gave up trying to completely cover herself in mud and hurried to walk beside him. "I can't believe I'm leaving tomorrow," she sighed, her first mention of the topic they'd both tried their best to ignore all day.

Harrierpaw's heart tugged painfully. "Me neither," he agreed, tail dragging in the mud. "At least you get to see your friends and family again." Despite this, he couldn't help wondering if he was a better friend than any of her Clanmates back in ThistleClan.

"Hmmm." She shrugged, sounding regretful. "I'm going to miss DeltaClan, you know."

"I'll miss you," Harrierpaw added sadly. He forced a gentle smile onto his face, trying to chase away his disappointment that his closest friend had to leave soon. "On the bright side, I'll have your stone to remember you. Actually, wait - follow me!" He swerved towards the apprentices' den, paws itching to show her.

Beneath the neatly woven reeds of his nest he drew out a smooth stone. He'd kept it nestled within the reeds for as long as he could remember. It had been a gift from his mother, now the only reminder of her after her death at the jaws of a fox. Its deep amber reminded him of warm honey and golden sunshine, of Willow's bright golden eyes, of warmth and happiness that seemed to fill him whenever he was with his friend. "For you."

"Oh! For me?" she gasped, eyes as wide as the full moon. She pawed the stone closer, blinking in admiration at it. "Thanks!"

"Now we both have stones to match," he purred, gently setting down the shimmering stone she'd given him beside his - no, her - stone. They glowed like twin suns in the pale light.

"That's right," she purred in agreement. "Best friends will never be separated, no matter the distance. And maybe some day I'll come back and we'll see each other again! Promise you'll remember me?"

"Promise," he laughed. "I promise."
