It had been a rough year for Reynard and his family. His mother fell ill in the spring, and she struggled with her health throughout summer and most of autumn. Everyone had pitched in to help care for her, but she had still made an effort to take care of her mate and children. Reynard admired her strength, and as the holiday season rolled around, his only wish was to do something special to show her how much she was appreciated. His father and sisters agreed.
They had a nice cabin by the lake where the family spent their summers together, and that seemed like the perfect place. Reynard carefully sorted through their many boxes of holiday decorations with his sisters, each of them choosing ornaments that were dear to their mother's heart. Some had been made by them over the years, which brought smiles to their faces.
Their father's job was to keep her distracted so she wouldn't catch on. He took her to all her favorite places, wanting to do a few special of his own for her. She was especially happy to go to her favorite bakery again, and he spoiled her by buying her whatever she wanted from the craft store. She was beginning to feel better, and set her mind to making gifts for Christmas. With what seemed like a lifetime supply of yarn, she began knitting.
Meanwhile, the kids had strung tinsel and lights all around the cabin. They had searched for hours to find the perfect tree. Reynard was left to the decorating while his sisters worked on baking goodies for everyone to enjoy. Getting the lights on the roof was a bit of a challenge. He slipped in the snow a few times, but he managed to get everything placed just the way he wanted.
On Christmas Eve, Reynard's mother and father came to the cabin. The lights made it glow against the newly fallen snow, and the inside was warm and welcoming. A fire was lit in the fireplace, where she settled to knit and drink hot chocolate with her family. It was the happiest she had been in months. Her smile warmed all their hearts.
Christmas Day brought friends and more family, all gathering together to feast, share stories and laugh. Seeing his mother so happy, surrounded by everyone she loved, was everything Reynard could have asked for and more. He received other gifts, but seeing the happiness in his mother was his greatest wish come true.
