Stars pepper the solemn obsidian night,
Like diamonds twinkling brightly despite the growing fear,
The full moon’s glow a guiding light,
As the she-cat’s silent pawsteps go ever near.

After tireless hours of trekking she reached the frontier,
However no sense of accomplishment warmed her heaving chest,
Although faint reassurances did whisper into her furred ear,
The unaware spirits welcoming their frightened guest.

She leaps onto the sacred rock, her cobalt eyes shifting to the west,
As she gazes towards the last flickers of color from the setting sun,
Hesitating to bring forth the news of her failed test,
Unknowing that when this battle had been lost, the real war had only just begun.

The rueful consequence of her treacherous action she soon would see,
“Forgive me dear ancestors, for I have failed to fulfill your prophecy.”

They were only small.
