Bear didn't expect to survive when the world ended. Not with a bang, but with tank-sized insects. It had only been 2 days since the "accident" happened at the old military factory. Consequently, huge mutated insects ran the cities & preyed on anything that moved.

Bear had originally planned to lock himself in his home & enjoy his last few days doing whatever the hell he wished to do, but Bear was starving.
I'm not going to live that long anyways, what's the point? I'd rather die fighting than to starve like this. The rusty soldier stood up & glanced at his rifle. It had only been 2 years since he'd been discharged from the military, though Bear felt like it had been ages. He hoped that this skill would improve his chances of survival, but he wasn't counting on it. He hauled his weapon over his shoulder & exited the building.

The grim view of demolished skyscrapers & abandoned vehicles greeted him. Huh, peaceful. Bear thought as a silent breeze greeted him.
The supermarket shouldn't be too far. If I could make it there, I'll probably just grab whatever's left in there. Hopefully-

Huh? Bear was particularly good at picking up vibrations. Years of deafness helped him strengthen his senses in that particular area. Normally, the vibrations would be small & hard to detect, but these vibrations felt different (Later in his journey, he would call these vibrations "tremors"). They coursed through his body like electricity & overwhelmed him. The sensations were stronger than anything he'd ever felt. It came in waves, almost like a giant bird flapping its wings. Or maybe... A giant dragonfly flapping its wings. Bear's suspicions were confirmed when he looked up towards the sky to see a giant dragonfly blocking the sun out. The mutated test experiment had its legs stretched out, ready to make Bear its next meal. Not today, loser. Bear loaded his rifle as he aimed for the giant creature.

BOOM.

... Maybe I won't die as fast as I thought I would, he mused as broken bug shells rained from the sky, like raindrops on a sunny day.

"Commander, the horde is headed this way! We're in danger!" An injured soldier yelled out as he stumbled through the messy battlefield.
"What breed?" Bear questioned in a gruff tone. Though he was hard of hearing, he was able to pick up the soldier's words based off of the vibrations he gave off.
"Model 53-A, the screech." Silence filled the room as the other soldiers heard the news. Whispers filled the area, & fear loomed over the soldiers like a cloud.
"Ah... Those annoying rascals," Bear grinned as he wrapped a white bandage around his bleeding hand. "Everyone take cover & return to the base! I'll take care of it!" Immediately, the soldiers scrambled for safety & vacated the war zone.
"What about you, commander? Let me help you take this beast down."
"Did you forget?" Bear smirked as he pointed to his ears. "There's no point in losing another good fighter when I can take these creatures down like fruit flies... Normal flies. Ha."
"Ah... Good luck!" The soldier's voice was filled with part fear, part admiration for the brave leader. He gave Bear a quick salute before running off.

The battlefield was soon empty, & the lone warrior stood alone in the crumbling building. Eerie silence filled the night sky. It felt like an eternity before Bear finally picked up the tremors from the approaching enemy.
Boom.
Boom.
Boom. These creatures may be silent & swift, but they could never hide their loud tremors.
Boom. A monster sized screech stood before Bear. It's bullet-proof armor glowed like obsidian. It opened it's car-sized pincers & let out a deafening shriek. A shriek that would normally bring prey to their knees. The screech positioned itself to pounce but stopped abruptly as it saw Bear's still-standing posture. It let out another shriek, then another, then another.

Bear stood still, almost as if he were mocking the creature. The screech clicked its pincers in frustration at the sight of failure. Bear sighed before swinging his gun from his shoulder & tapped it twice on the ground.
"You know? Being near deaf was such a disadvantage back before the accident occurred. I was fired from my job because I couldn't hear my boss yelling at me. Who knew it would be a weapon against artificially made weapons like you? It's almost like my deafness is a miracle! Isn't that ironic?" Bear nonchalantly mused as he casually loaded his weapon. The tower-like insect let out another shriek in frustration before charging at the commander. The tremors coursed through Bear's veins like adrenaline.

how being deaf effects them: bay really dislikes his ear hair. he wishes it where gone, and he has even attempted to cut it off. it is very hard to communicate with other kals, because sign language is not really an option, regarding his paws. when he was younger, bay hadn't grown out ear hair yet; but because of the large growth of hair in other particular spots, him and his mother, along with the clinic, predicted that his ear hair would grow out. his mother, concerned, made him attend a class that practiced something very similar to sign language. it was a way to communicate using the tail, called 尾巴談話; translated to 'tail talk'.
bay hated this class and thought it was no use to take it; but ended up being immensely thankful for it and glad his mother had been a worrywart.
how they use it to their advantage: generally, bay is salty about his ears, but in the long run he has decided that being deaf is pretty nice sometimes. first off, bay finds it extremely easy to fall asleep, now that he can't hear any racket going on in the night. something else, something that has shed over the years but bay still enjoys, is angering his younger brother by pretending not to feel his tail signals tapping on his back. his little brother, shale, hates this and his blood boils everytime bay does it. to add on to the brother annoying, bay also dismisses his brother by thrashing his tail twice, which in tail talk means screw off, or in a nicer way, thrashing the tail once means please stop.

How being deaf effects them:
Being deaf, it is generally hard to communicate. You don't know what people are saying most of the time, especially when it is something necessary for work, school or even life in general. Here is one story that I have had happen to me, and it absolutely sucks.
I was hanging out with my friends right before a meeting at work. Now, only one of the three girls with me knew sign language, so I could only understand what she was saying. At one point we were all discussing what we were going to do for our project. The one that knows sign language, Riana, was translating as fast as she could, but not fast enough for me to catch up with what was going on. My teacher, Mrs.Smith, would always update me when she could since I missed out on a lot of class.
I was born deaf, so I don't really know what I am missing out on. Sometimes I just like to imagine not having to catch up on work and not always needing to watch a translator.
How they use it to their advantage:
Though being deaf has its downers, there are some positives.
I can't ever hear anyone talking about me. Like, go ahead, gossip about me or bully me. If you don't know sign language, I don't know what you are saying. I have had tons of rumors spread about me, I think.
It is easy to sleep since I can't hear anything.
Another plus is the fact that, since I am really attractive, is most people try to ask me out speaking regularly. So I can't hear them and they keep blabbering on and on. It is kinda funny though. I actually have had someone ask me out USING SIGN LANGUAGE. I said yes and we are still together till this day. This Kal actually understood the struggle I was going through since they were slight of hearing. They used a hearing aid and then they could hear just fine. I was so jealous of that, but the two of us are still in love.
I also have a really strong sense of smell, my family thinks it's because I lack another sense. So that is pretty cool.
