Prompt: the feeling of providing, being a source of life makes Yellowbee strong.
(489 words, yikes. Cutting it close lol.)A gentle breeze bumbled through the shoreline. Palm trees rustled in the breeze, tickling the salt-slathered air with gentle, spindly fingers. The air tasted of the endless blue stretch busied with swallowing the sun. From atop a young palm tree, hooded eyes blended with the luscious colors of the foliage he called his home. Yellowbee, squinting his jade-kissed eyes, watched the cluster of seagulls make yet another turn, heading back for his perch.
He’d spent almost two hours now, trying to thwart them off from his catch. Finally, the young tom had forced his fear behind him and plunged into the surf. The waves beat his golden brown pelt with as much force as they could possibly muster - but underneath the calm twist of the churning sea, Yellowbee had found himself strangely at peace. It took the warrior several attempts to catch the fish he held so tightly in his maw. Yellowbee was convinced nothing, not even a human monster, could take away the pride that swelled in his chest.
The tom scaled down his hiding place, jogging with his willowy tail high in the sky. Let the seagulls try to take his prey. He’d be carting them all to the fresh-kill pile alongside the dripping fish. A looming shadow flew over him, making a haphazard swipe with its outstretched talons. Yellowbee burst into a blinding sprint, soaring over the jagged set of rocks that marked the border or his camp.
Shrouded in the warmth of the sun and the shadow that his limber figure cast, an overwhelming burst of inner strength overtook the tom.
As his clan mates turned their bewildered heads to him, Yellowbee’s shoulders stood tall and proud. He had purpose. He had a family to provide for. Not even the ocean’s tides could quench his flame.
“Silverwing, Lilydust, Herongaze!” Scorchstar called from his perch on the sunning rocks. “Help Yellowbee be rid of his unwanted guests.”
His cheeks began to burn as Yellowbee’s muzzle rumpled in joy. Pelt by pelt, Yellowbee counted his clanmates as they rushed past him, soaring with their powerful hind legs into the sky at the pesky seagulls tearing at his fur. Finally, he felt it. The feeling Scorchstar promised upon his unwilling agreement to join Tideclan. He would know what it was like to have a home. To feel the pride and excitement that came with survival. Together, they were an unbreakable chain. They were stronger than the greatest typhoon. Tideclan was unstoppable.
And so was he.
Yellowbee met Scorchstar’s gaze as the massive tabby descended his throne of rock. Scorchstar held his head up high, a grin of his own wrinkling his nose.
“Can you feel it now, Yellowbee? That fire. That determination?” Scorchstar muttered low enough for only the striped feline to catch.
Yellowbee’s pelt prickled with lightning as he dropped his catch on the freshkill pile. His eyes sparkled with emerald flames.
“I do, Scorchstar. I do.”
