RISE | #1184

Postby clouds-move-on » Mon Nov 19, 2018 5:58 pm

Welcome to Rise!
Rise is an adoptable based on Warrior Cats and focused around world building and character development.
Please make sure that you read the main thread so that you understand limits and levels!

To enter, you must own a founder and be at level 1, or must not have a founder form submitted and can adopt this cat as your founder!

For this cat, tell me about a parent-child or mentor-apprentice bond they had- with them as the parental or mentor figure. The goal is to describe what it is like for them to hold responsibility over someone younger, and how it affected or changed them as a person. You have no word max, although it has to be over 100 words, and try to keep it under 2,000. You have two drawings, and the character chosen can be an rise cat, an npc, adoptive relation, or even another animal if you choose, so long as it involves how the responsibility of protecting someone or training someone changed them! This contest is going to last until November 21st, so it's rather short. There'll only be extensions if not enough forms are complete. No extras.

Cat Name: Dapplesong
Clan: Ridgeclan
Rank: deptuy

Gender: female
Age: 30 moons
Partner:
Prompt:
"Dapplesong, you need to come and see what the border patrol found close to the two-leg border," Willowleap called to the molly before she could slip out from camp.

"What they found?" Dapplesong questions but followed the other molly back to camp none the less.

Following the gray molly, Dapplesong became more confused as they headed towards the cliff and then into the nursery. What would the patrol find that they would bring into here? Of course, that really shouldn't have been a question when she slipped in behind Willowleap, spotting a small orange bundle curled at the back of the den. Kestrelstar was the only other cat, other than the kit, in the den at the time and from her point at the entrance, Dapplesong could see the tiny thing shaking with fear.

"Dapplesong, Willowleap thank you for getting her" Kestrelstar greeted the molly while dismissing the other.

"The border patrol found it I'm told?" She askes the leader, getting straight to the point to find out why such a thing would be found on the border.

"Yes. They say he stunk of two-legs but the smell was old he would have been left there days ago. To young to be left on his own though, only looks about two moons by my guess. He didn't struggle much when they brought him back but hasn't said a word to anyone. I know this is a lot to ask, but I was wondering if you would watch him, at least until we figure out if he has somewhere to go. We don't have any queens right now and out of all the warriors you seemed the best fit."

Listening to the clan leader Dapplesong could only watch the little kit shaking in the corner, probably cold from his time alone but too afraid to let anyone near him. In the end, she simply nodded and moved towards the kit, her body curling around his while her tongue worked to warm his body. "I'll watch him for as long as he's here," She told not only the leader but the kit whos struggles to get away she ignored in favor of getting him warm first.

"You're going to be safe here, even if you don't know it right now."

Did you forget me so soon?
The one who made you,
turned you into this monster?
How sad.

Though I guess it's to be expected,
you always liked to block things out.
If it didn't make sense in your mind,
you just forgot about it.

But maybe it's because I didn't,
make you into a monster that is.
You already were a monster,
weren't you?

      Gender: tom
      Age: sixteen moons

Prompt: goldenbeach was mentored by elkshadow, the clan's deputy, who was a warrior at the time. at first, the two of them couldn't stand each other. goldenpaw was too bubbly and energetic for elkshadow's cold and short-tempered nature. it was a rocky beginning.

goldenpaw was always rebellious and no one really dared to tell him no. his mother was too busy with his sick sister to really do anything, so he figured he was alone and could do whatever he wanted.

      then elkshadow came along.

goldenpaw absolutely hated him. he couldn't stand how up-tight and strict he was. he thought elkshadow would be the death of him with his harsh criticism and rules. they got into many fights and insults were thrown between the two many, many times. while elkshadow was born and raised a kittypet, goldenpaw wasn't, and he frequently insulted his mentor for that.

but elkshadow stayed. he didn't give up on goldenpaw and tell dawnstar to find him a different mentor. he insisted on sticking around while no one else cared enough to put up with goldenpaw's games. he taught him discipline and respect, and after a very, very long time the two of them began to see eye to eye. as elkshadow was becoming viewed more as a clan member and less as an outsider, goldenpaw was realizing that all he wanted was to fit in.

once, goldenpaw caught him breaking down when he thought he was alone, speaking to the stars about how he just wanted to feel like he belonged. after that night, goldenpaw vowed to never insult or disrespect his mentor again. he vowed to do every single stupid training activity, even if he didn't learn anything useful from it, and to make elkshadow feel welcomed.

besides dawnstar, goldenpaw was the first cat to welcome elkshadow to the clan voluntarily. he began to show him kindness and teach him about the ways of twilightclan, things he hadn't learned since he joined.

by the time goldenpaw became a warrior, elkshadow was like an older brother to him. they got into fights but at the end of the day, the two of them loved each other. goldenpaw became goldenbeach and when dawnstar was looking for a deputy, goldenbeach was sure to put in a good word for his former mentor turned best friend.

    Username: .Lone Wolf..
    Cat Name: Adderthorn
    Clan: Spirit Clan
    Rank: warrior

    Gender: tom
    Age: 27 moons
    Partner: Sparrowpaw
Prompt: Adderthorn hated kits. As a recently made warrior, Adderthorn was content to never have to train an apprentice. After all, all they did was squeak and complain. He spent his days patrolling the border and practicing battle moves. Most cats looked up to him because of his intelligence, but none stayed close because of his sharp-tongue and bitter humor. That all changed in one morning.

"WHAT !?!?" A yowl could be heard throughout clan camp coming from the leaders den. Warriors crept out from the shadows to gather around to see what all the commotion was. Adderthorn stalked out of the leaders den, tail swishing side to side and left camp, muttering under his breath. Sootstar followed, shaking his head.

-- previously in the leaders den --

"Thank you for coming to see me, there is something I need to discuss with you." Sootstar mewed softly, moving his bushy tail to cover his paws. Adderthorn nodded his head and kept quiet.

"I think it's time for you to mentor an apprentice, would you mentor Sparrowkit for me?" Sootstar asked, looking at the younger warrior.

"WHAT !?!? Sparrowkit!? There's no way that I will mentor her, she's too much energy, she'll never listen to me!" Adderthorn protested, fur bristling. There was no way he would mentor her, not in a thousand moons.

Sootstar shook his head, eyes glinting "I respect you Adderthorn, and yes, even though you're a younger warrior, I believe you have what it takes. You WILL mentor Sparrowkit."

Adderthorn grumbled quietly, knowing he couldn't say no. Turning, tail, he stalked out of the den, head held high in defiance.

    -- two moons later --
Sparrowpaw and Adderthorn crept silently through the underbrush, their eyes focused forward on a plump rabbit. Adderthorn paused, and watched tenderly as the young apprentice crept forward, moving ever so slowly. The rabbit stilled, and twitched its nose, catching scent of the two cats. Adderthorn shook his head softly, knowing that the rabbit would get away, but Sparrowpaw growled in determination, and leaped forward. As the rabbit started running, Adderthorn watched in amazement, Sparrowpaw seemed to soar over the confused rabbit. Spinning and landing in front of the rabbit, she killed it with a single paw-swipe and a quick nip to the neck.

"Sparrowpaw!! Well done! I thought we had it done for when it caught our scent, but you surprised me with that leap. You're going to make a great spring warrior." Adderthorn purred, walking up to her. Her eyes shone with pride as he touched her gently with his tail. Adderthorn, who started as a grumpy sarcastic tom finally learned to lighten up and appreciate all cats. Sootstar was right to pair Adderthorn with Sparrowpaw, for her bright energy lightened his dark scorn, making the two a powerful team.

Cat Name: Alder
Clan: Eclipse Clan
Rank: Warrior

Gender: Tom
Age: 62 moons
Prompt:
Parenting on his own wasn’t exactly something Alder had ever planned for his life. Certainly he’d been a loner for quite some time, but he’d wanted to have you know, a mate who didn’t up and leave him with their kittens unexpectedly. Not even died, just left.

So of course their little darling Blossom was going to notice as he paced side to side and muttered under his breath while Mama continued to not show up.

“Dad?” Blossom asked, wide kitten eyes glimmering up at him sorrowfully. “Dad, where’d Mom go?”

Alder did his best to keep the bitterness out of his voice as he responded to his daughter. “Mom… left. I don’t think she’ll be back.”

A frown crossed Blossom’s face. “Are you sure they’re not dead?”

“Positive.” Alder snorted, his face a scowl. “Absolutely positive. They ran off like some sorta -” he descended into muttering curses under his breath.

Blossom looked up at him with sad, wide eyes. “So... does that mean you’re the only one left?”

“Sure looks like it,” he said, softly. “Why don’t you get some sleep? It’s getting late, kiddo. I think I’m gonna take you out hunting tomorrow, okay?”

“Okay.” Blossom drooped, and Alder could tell she was upset about Blizzard leaving them. She was a tough little thing, always had been, probably always would be. Alder was proud of her. Why couldn’t Blizzard have felt the same?

There was no sleep coming to Alder that night as he kept watch over his darling kitten. He kept one eye on Blossom as she slept, shoulders shaking from the weight of losing a mother, and his other eye out towards the forest. He hoped beyond all hope that Blizzard would come to their senses and come back. It was doubtful though. Blizzard was a stubborn idiot.

*******************
“C’mon dad! Let’s go hunting!”

Alder’s eye cracked open. It was barely dawn, the warm orange glow illuminating the den he and Blossom had made in an abandoned twoleg den.

“Blossom, it’s too early for this,” Alder groaned, rolling over. “Five more minutes?”
“No, dad, you promised!” Blossom gave him a pleading look. “Please? I’ll catch a bird this time!”

That was a tempting prospect. Alder had spent the past two moons after Blizzard’s disappearance teaching her to hunt, and although Blossom had caught many other kinds of prey, she still hadn’t caught the bird she so wanted to catch. Alder wanted to be there for her.

“Okay, okay!” Tiredly, Alder stumbled to his feet. Blossom had quite a lot of energy, and it almost took all Alder had to keep up with her as she scampered out to the woods they’d been living in.

“Now wait here,” said Blossom softly, her nose pricked in the air. Alder watched as she assumed a hunting crouch, a rather skillful one thanks to his teaching. A rush of pride filled his heart as she stalked forwards and leaped into the bush.

There was a crunch and a snap, and moments later Blossom came bounding up to Alder with a bird in her teeth. It wasn’t the cleanest of kills - the little thing was ruffled in all sorts of places - but she’d caught it!

“Good job, kiddo!” said Alder, beaming. “Your training has paid off.”

Blossom dropped the bird and pranced around, bouncing like the little kitten she really was. “I did! I caught it! I caught it!”

She darted over to rub up against Alder, purring against his chest happily. “You’re the best dad ever!”

A genuine smile crossed Alder’s face. It had been a while since he’d felt this happy, after all. Blizzard had certainly made him happy, but they were long gone.

“And you’re the best daughter I could have ever had,” murmured Alder back, his heart light. “Now come on, let's eat breakfast!”

“Yay!”

***************************

Blossom was twelve moons old now. Alder had watched her grown from a rambunctious little kitten dealing with the loss of a mother to a bold molly with a proud smile and a smirk on her face that mean she owned the world, or at least the hearts of all the cats who’d tried to pursue her and failed.

That didn’t mean he wasn’t a part of her life. Blossom came to him asking for advice and stuck with him. It was strange for Alder to be such an anchor in another cat’s life, especially since he’d lived a life on his own for quite some time.

So when one evening Blossom approached him with a worried look, Alder was quick to worry.

“Hey, kiddo, what’s up?”

Blossom gave him a peculiar sort of look, shimmery eyes and a slight frown. “Dad, I… I wanna go look for Mom.”

Oh. Spikes of anger shot up through him, but Alder pushed them down. He had to be nice for Blossom after all.

“Why do you want to look for that cat?” he asked, barely hiding the contempt in his voice.

“Maybe they’ll want to come home if they see how awesome I am?” suggested Blossom weakly. “Really, I just want to know who my Mom is. Is that too much to ask?”

Alder considered this statement. He was furious with Blizzard for taking off like that with no warning, wanted to tear them a new one and add another scar to that collection. But at the same time, Blossom had never had the chance to really meet Blizzard.

He let out a sigh. “Okay. But only if I come with you. I don’t want you getting hurt, and Blizzard and I are going to have words.”

Blossom nodded. “Thanks, Dad. Should we go tomorrow or say goodbye first?”

“Let’s say goodbye.” A choice he probably wouldn’t have made before Blossom and Blizzard, but it was a good one. A very good one. “Tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow,” Blossom agreed, leaning against Alder. “Tomorrow. And then the quest to find Mom begins.”

Cat Name: DustShimmer
Clan: LotusClan
Rank: Warrior

Gender: female
Age: 45 moons
Partner: npc apprentice JayPaw
Prompt:

PaleSwan looked at the young kit “I NEED her,” she whined to DustShimmer. The spotted cat sighed, “No, you don’t. She’s a kitten, they take a lot of time and a great deal of RESPONSIBILITY.” Pale wondered why her wife had said “responsibility” like that. Oh well, probably because it wasn’t important. “Well, she’s really cute and I want her,” Pale said to Dust, giving her that smile that always assured a yes. The creases on Dust’s forehead showed such obvious joy, it made Pale wonder why DustShimmer wasn’t scooping that cute kitten up. Pale walked over and picked up the sweet kitten. “We’ll name her CuteKit,” she murmured through the scruff in her mouth. DustShimmer shook her head. “How about JayKit?” she said and Pale nodded her head eagerly, swinging the kit everywhere. Dust narrowed her eyes and took the kit. Awww, she loved Jay sooooo much! “We really don’t need this stinky thing,” Pale’s mate muttered. “I know!!!” Pale exclaimed, so excited that Dust adopted the kit because she WANTED Jay instead of just needing her.
Moons passed and PaleSwan quickly grew tired of her strenuous duties of licking JayKit on the nose and saying “boop!” So did DustShimmer. At first Dust did it just to do it but she now put so much love and effort into each little thing. Pale thought this was very smart, as it would get everything done faster.
Finally it was the day of Jay’s apprentice ceremony. Pale was so glad that the little brat wouldn’t be her problem anymore. DustShimmer looked at the newly named JayPaw, her eyes brimming with tears and a huge smile lighting up her face. Pale noticed that her wife was so relieved, that she was actually crying! PaleSwan sighed, “We really shouldn’t have adopted that kit. I can’t believe you convinced me, even though I told you it would be hard.” Exasperated, her wife glared up at her. “It was the other way around,” she hissed. She sighed, “Thanks for convincing me to adopt her, though. I thought it was a terrible idea at first but I’m so proud of our little girl.” Pale rolled her eyes and trotted off.

Prompt:

Cedartail pawed into the clearing of the camp as other cats were gathering. He scowled at the kits that were running and squealing in front of him and went over to sit next to Dapplepelt.
"Kits these days." Cedartail huffed. Dapplepelt snorted, and Cedartail looked up at her questioningly. "What?" He asked.
"You were like that, too." She said. Cedartail rolled his eyes and fixed his attention on the leader. The crowd of cats hushed as the leader began to speak.
"Alderkit." The leader called. "You have shown true bravery and kindness to your clanmates. For that, you will now recieve your apprentice name, Alderpaw."
"Alderpaw! Alderpaw!" Cats yowled to the sky.
"Your mentor will be Cedartail." Cedartail looked shocked. He didn't want to mentor a bothersome apprentice, he wanted to be out patrolling and hunting.
"Cedartail, I trust you will pass your respect and leadership skills to this apprentice." And with, that the leader hopped off the stone and went to organize patrols.
Cedartail padded over to his new apprentice.
"Hi Cedartail!" Alderpaw said excitedly. "Are we going to hunt? Or will we go patrolling?" Alderpaw gasped. "Will we get to see the other clans?"
Cedertail couldn't help but smile. The apprentice was so full of curiosity and excitement. It reminded him of himself.
"Sure." He said. He directed the apprentice toward the entrance to camp and took him out.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ later

Cedartail laughed as he entered the camp with Alderpaw. Dapplepelt padded by and three kits rushed up to Cedartail.
"Cedartail!" One of them, and wiry tabby, squeaked. "Do you want to play moss-ball?" She nudged a small ball of moss toward Cedartail. Cedartail chuckled.
"Sure, but maybe later." He said softly. He looked up and saw Dapplepelt watching him. She smiled.
"Kits these days." She echoed. Cedartail pawed her softly, laughing. Dapplepelt laughed, too.
"But really," she said, taking a breath. "It looks like Alderpaw has changed you for the better."
Cedertail gazed lovingly at his apprentice, who was busy playing moss-ball with the kits.
"Yes." He murmured. "Yes, he has."
