    Username: munchkin.
    Cat Name: orchidpetal, previously silvernose
    Gender: female
    Age: thirty-seven moons
    Clan: emberclan
    Rank: warrior

    Prompt:
silvernose could remember it just like yesterday. she remembered the dry season, the way everybody fought over a drop of water. she remembered lilyfrost trying to calm everyone down, she remembered orchidkit's soft white pelt pressed up against her coat, her unusual eye colors (one light blue and one emerald green). she remembered the storm shaking the trees, and she remembered orchidkit's soft terrified mewls.

    "mama?"
orchidkit squeaked, snuggling closer into her mother's short pelt.

    "what is it?"

"I'm scared. It-It's so loud. It hurts my ears."
orchidkit whimpered, her high-pitched voice cracking. silvernose wrapped her long tail around the young kit before giving her a comforting lick on her forehead. "nothing can hurt you, my little orchid. I'll protect you. I promise." silvernose whispered to orchidkit, giving a comforting smile. orchidkit laid her head back down, letting out soft purrs as silvernose licked her pelt, calming the kit down.

It was just after that conversation that lightning struck a tree near camp. with it being so dry, the fire spread rapidly, sparing no mercy to any of the cats in camp.

"everyone! we need to get out of camp immediately!"

emberstar yowled over all the other cat's screaming. all silvernose could feel was terror as the camp began to splinter apart. the fire already reached camp. all of the cats in the warriors den were trapped by a fallen tree, and she could hear their terrified yowls, and some paws stuck out of the warriors den, desperately reaching for something. olivenose, a new warrior was desperately clawing at the den, trying to reach his sister, cavetooth. flarenose was sobbing in the middle of camp, distraught and confused. the only cats that seemed to be quite calm were lilyfrost and emberstar, but they still were shaking heavily.

    "NOW!"

lilyfrost screeched, causing all of the cats to barely sit upright. "if we stay here, we're DEAD!" lilyfrost yowled. "we need to get out of here now, or else all of us are dead."

silvernose shivered, before looking down at orchidkit. the kits was terrified, shaking and crying. suddenly silvernose felt the need to run as far as she could, to save her young kit before they all died. she quickly grabbed orchidkit by the scruff, which caused the kit to let out a soft mewl of terror.

everything after that was hazy. all she could remember was the fear, the adrenaline. she could remember the way she ran at a speed she never expected from herself. she remembered a bit of orchidkits soft white fur pressed against her, and the way she curled up in a tiny ball.

run run run run run rUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN

despite being safe, she still felt the need to run and run and run until orchidkit was safe. almost half of the clan was missing. some held onto the hope that their loved ones survived, but silvernose didn't really care about the other cats. she only cared about orchidkit, who was sleeping peacefully beside her.

life was not easy after that, sadly. yes, a few cats did return, like owleyes who was in the dirtplace when the fire started, or flowerpelt, who took a midnight stroll before the fire (which confused silvernose since there was a thunderstorm before the fire.) but slowly the cats started starving. everybody was weak and tired, and greatly wounded. with no medicine cat to help them, a few cats died of their wounds, like chiveclaw who died because of the smoke he breathed in, or juniperwing who died because of heavy burns on his pelt.

soon, every cat could count everyone's ribs. whisperberry died in their sleep because of starvation. wrenheart was the first cat to go, saying that he would become a kittypet. the second he left a bunch of other cats left for that life too, like typhoonclaw, sparrowheart, sparrowpaw, lochwish, whitepaw, mudkit, and barkkit. now there was only silvernose, orchidkit, emberstar, lilyfrost, flowerpelt, owleyes, and flarenose.

but then emberstar died in his sleep.

everybody split up after that, including silvernose and orchidkit. with no leader, everybody left. technically lilyfrost was leader now, but she refused to become a leader, saying emberstar was the last leader.

the cats that stayed all became loners, too wild to become kittypets but too hungry to stay in their clan. silvernose traveled east, hoping to find prey for her kit who was barely alive.

silvernose didn't find what she was looking for.

silvernose woke up in the log she decided to take shelter in. she yawned lightly, sleepy eyes looking at her kit sleeping. her gaze softened as she looked at her kit, and she felt bad for having to wake the kit up. she licked orchidkit's back fur, before she instantly knew something was wrong.

her kit was freezing, and silvernose could see maggots digging into her, making silvernose screech. she instantly pulled the maggots out, before staring at her kit.

for the first time she could see orchidkit clearly.

    her chest wasn't rising.

silvernose screeched to the stars after that, wondering why it was her kit that died. the one light in her life was dead, and would never return.

silvernose laid down and watched the crows circle around her, sensing that she was about to die. silvernose didn't mind. she deserved to die. because she didn't become a kittypet, her kit died. all she could think of was orchidkit's little smile, and her odd eyes that were nothing but beautiful in her eyes. she still had kit fluff behind her ears.

    she didn't deserve to die.

silvernose opened her eyes for a second, before screeching as she realized the crows had found orchidkit's limp body, which was covered in leaves.

silvernose ran as fast as she could to the crows, swatting one of them with her claws. the crow continued trying to grab orchidkit from silvernose, clawing silvernose and even dragging her lightly into the air a few times before having to let go.

after a while of fighting, the crows finally flew off.

silvernose trembled as she looked at her kit. she looked almost angelic, despite the fact her fur was matted and dirty. in that second, she could see orchidkit's mouth curled into a smile. silvernose cried into her kit's soft fur, wishing she could see her grow old and find a mate and have kits of her own.

my sweet orchid, you didn't deserve this.

silvernose buried her in the ground by the fallen log, and found a few flowers that she laid in orchidkit's grave. she cleaned her kit profusely, before laying her in her grave. despite being dead, she looked beautiful and more peaceful than she ever was in life. silvernose sat beside her, hoping for a miracle to happen, for her kit to open her eyes and smile and say starclan gave her another chance.

but that never happened. after a few hours, she finally scooped the dirt up and put it inside her grave. just as she was about to leave, she saw something that looked like a miracle to her.

    an orchid seed.

she scooped the orchid up and put it in orchidkit's grave, tears flooding her eyes as she said her final goodbyes to her beloved orchid.

you may think that's the end of the story. but it isn't exactly the end for poor silvernose.

she traveled far and wide, leaving tears wherever she stood. her once bright, hopeful eyes were dull. she wanted to die and see orchidkit again, but she wanted orchidkit's memory to live on. she wanted to have other kits just like orchidkit so she could tell them her story and she wanted to see orchidkit's starry pelt watching over her peacefully.

but it was so hard. some days she couldn't even find the motivation to get out of her nest in the morning. grief flooded off of her in waves, and she was quite hostile to any cat who dared to go near her. the life of a loner frustrated her greatly, and silvernose just wished that she was back in clan camp, purring as orchidkit batted at a butterfly. she could just imagine flarenose's agitation as lochwish batted at his tail, and owleyes purring as poolwind have him a nuzzle. she could see emberstar's stoic face as he calmly tried to stop cavetooth and sparrowheart from fighting.

after a while of thought, silvernose decided that she wanted to try to find lilyfrost, who she assumed would try to rebuild the clan. lilyfrost always was one for clan life and silvernose knew if she came back perhaps a new clan would rise from the ashes.

and so she traveled back to the twolegplace. after a while of looking for cats she knew, she found sparrowheart, now marina. marina happily showed her the direction of lilyfrost, and said that if she didn't find lilyfrost then her twolegs always had some room for another cat.

and so silvernose traveled where lilyfrost went.

she almost gave up hope, until a kittypet said they saw a lynx-point tabby with light blue eyes traveling towards a forest. silvernose was ecstatic when she found lilyfrost, who caught a mouse.

"it's so great to see you, silvernose."

lilyfrost purred, her eyes shining bright and an amused smile on her face.

"it's good to see you too!"

silvernose mewed back, her once dull eyes finally showing happiness for the first time in forever.

after a while of talking and explaining what happened to orchidkit, lilyfrost gave her an idea.

"hey... how about you tend to some plants?"

    "what?"

silvernose was confused. flowers? silvernose was a warrior through and through, she wasn't a medicine cat who would tend to flowers.

"you don't have to be a medicine cat to plant, silvernose. maybe it'll.... help?"

lilyfrost said, careful to not word it wrong. silvernose and lilyfrost talked for a while before silvernose finally tried out her idea. silvernose quickly fell into a routine of hunting, tending to her flowers, sleep, and repeat the cycle.

to her own surprise, it helped her a lot. the flowers reminded her of orchidkit, but instead of causing grief, it gave her good memories and it gave her time to think. she liked the way she could create life in her paws by planting a seed and giving it water, and she liked the way the petals felt in her paws. and after a while, she found meanings to the flowers she planted.

pink carnations meant the love of a mother. asters were for patience. hydrangeas meant heartfelt emotions. snapdragons meant graciousness and strength. stock meant lasting beauty and a happy life.

and of course, orchids meant innocence and purity.

    ---

    "are you sure about this?"

    silvernose said to lilyfro- lilystar.

    "of course!"

lilyfrost purred, giving her a friendly shoulder-nudge.

    "o-okay."

"spirits of starclan, you know every cat by name. I ask you now to take away the name from the cat you see before you, for it no longer stands for what she is. by my authority as clan leader, and with the approval of our warrior ancestors, I give this cat a new name. From this moment on she will be known as orchidpetal, in honor of orchidkit."

silverno- orchidpetal didn't know if she was just imagining it, but she could just see orchidkit's soft white pelt beside the orchids she planted, and finally orchidpetal felt at peace completely.

even though you're dead, you'll still always be here in my heart, and one day I will pass on and finally see you again.

    goodbye, my little orchid.

Extra: oof that's a lot. and it's really bad haha

Cat Name: ReedStar (reed as in cat tail reeds ! <3)
Gender: Female
Age: 34 moons
Clan: ReefClan
Rank: Founder // Leader

Prompt: ReedStar pawed the water quietly, holding back tears stronger than the support beams holding up the bridge that she lay on. She had told her clan numerous times not to visit this location since the twolegs built a track for a train here, and it was dangerous, but tonight was her night to weep for her heart was too heavy. ReedStar cannot help but morn the loss of her kittens. They are not dead, but they are gone. Reedstar used to be a kittypet, her previous name was Misty.

Misty had a litter of three kittens, but not long after reaching 6-12 moons they were given away to different two legs. Reedstar had run away from her twolegs in search of her kittens, but found a family in a clan instead. She wouldn't change it for the world, but she begs starclan everyday for the return of her kits.

Cat Name: Raindrop
Gender: Female
Age: 21 moons
Clan: Slateclan
Rank: Warrior

Prompt:
"It wasn't easy losing my kits, for starclan's sake, of course it would have been devastating for any molly."

Raindrop being fairly young and always having dreamed of little furballs curling up against her side made it all the harder.
The blue tabby was a kittypet, dearly loved and pampered by her human lady. Their relationship very close since kithood. "However, it couldn't compare with the relationship a feline mother had with her offspring. It was a special bond which I desired so greatly." At least this description was told to Raindrop by neighboring mollies having had several litters.

The she-cat used to have a big garden, which a wandering tom kept occasionally visiting for a mouthful of food and a bowl of water. He was quite feral and very silent, but mysterious and charming in his own way. She didn't object to him 'taking' her food, in fact, she wanted to share it with him, having enough.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was Raindrop's first litter, one fragile sickly girl and a big-boned male.
"Wonderful, what a miracle." Her voice in a low whisper as she watched the two bundles of joy with warm glistening jade eyes. "The gray tom shall be named Storm, while the white female will be Snow." She decided with a purr in her voice as she licked her newborns.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Time went by fast and the kittens grew up swiftly to be rambunctious little fellas. While Snow tried desperately to follow suit behind her brave brother, she quickly ran out of breath and needed to be halted to take a break and not overdo it. Storm on the other hand simply couldn't be stopped, having to investigate everything, that curious bugger. Though, he was fairly clumsy on his adventures.

Snow, however over the months became even sicker and kept losing weight for unknown reasons. Tiring out after just a couple of minutes, losing focus as she zoned out in the middle of a conversation and only wanting to sleep lots. "Oh, Snow just what can I do for you, I am so worried..." She murmured to herself in a quiet voice filled with concern.
At one fateful night, Raindrop arose from her sleep, woken by an awfully cold feeling next to her belly. To her fears, Snow had met her demise. The molly was greatly upset and angry at herself she couldn't have done more, couldn't have helped to possibly prevent this happening. However, deep down she knew, nothing could have been done to change a thing. Fate could never be tricked.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Being without his sister was hard for Storm, as well for the mother but fortunately, he wasn't hit too bad. The tom has always been a cheerful one and quick to bounce back. Unfortunately, it wasn't as easy for Raindrop.
Another month passed, but there was something weird going on. Their owner didn't come back for more than 2 days already. Slowly the food was getting scarce and truthfully, the molly started to get lonely, she missed her human a bunch.

However, the next day, strange men entered the house with boxes in their hands. It highly alarmed the she-cat. "Storm, get away from them, they smell funny. We need to leave, right now." Raindrop ordered her juvenile son. "But they got interesting things in their paws, I bet they came to play with us!" He smiled and bounded over without a second thought. A man reached out his hand, about to grab him at the scruff before the feline rushed forward and pushed the human away, giving a quick hiss then running off with Storm in her muzzle. The door wasn't yet closed behind the people and she escaped into the yard before jumping onto the wall and off beyond the place they called home.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From now on, they were alone, having to wander the woods. A surrounding she wasn't very familiar with.
They traveled through the forest, teaching her son the little gathering and hunting she saw as she watched his father do so. Honestly, they were scraping by, unused territory, unknown smells, and foreign food sources. It was a ton of fun for Storm, hardly intimidated by the vast land.

How was the saying again? Curiosity killed the cat? Well, it did.
"Look mom, look at what I found! Those berries look so pretty, I bet they'll taste great!" Storm shouted as he bounced over to a bush full of red fruits. "Storm, how many more times do I need to tell you to stop putting everything you see into your maw! It could be dangerous!" Raindrop yelled over to him as she came trotting up behind, but her kit was already munching away. Too late, because those berries looked ominously bad.
The young cat writhed in pain for several minutes before gasping for air and laying still, limp as his mother watched in shock, pawing him to move. Grief took her heart in its clutch, her small frame shaking from the pain of losing her last kitten.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since then, each night Raindrop sings a lullaby for her passed kits in Starclan as she watches the night sky. Her song traveling through the valley outside of camp as she sits on a hill, stargazing before heading off to sleep.
Always keeping the memories dear, although they did pain her. Because memories were all she had left.

Username: ☁Lady Raincloud☁
Cat Name: Riverwhisker
Gender: She-cat
Age: 28 moons
Clan: NocturneClan
Rank: Warrior, Hunter, Fisher, Scout

Prompt:
The silence was interrupted by a question.

"Why?"

Frostspeckle' his eyes igniting as they reflected they light of a nearby lamp, cast a she-cat nearby him a look. It was Belle, the cat who had been his mate. The two were once quite close, and in harmony with each other. But things had changed.

"They belong with me and my cats; I am leader now. I can't have my heirs wandering about the streets with you. I did offer you a home with me, as my queen- it was your choice to refuse!"

"I refused only because I cherish my life as I am." Belle said, her tone a pleading one. "I still loved you! I never meant to hurt you... I never dreamed you were some heir to some gang or other. It's just not the life I want to lead. I've seen how you battle daily with the other gangs, it isn't right!"

"It is what it is, Belle! It's been like that for generations now! Who am I to question it? It is my father's legacy and from it I have gained respect, territory, and loyal cats at my beck and call! You won't have to worry about fighting, not every cat needs to fight, but our borders-"

"I've already refused to join, don't you dare try and convince me again! I don't want that life- I can't... bare making friends with cats, just to loose them... in some... trivial dispute over territory! And I don't want that life for my kits either... You can't have them."

- - -

Yet Frostspeckle would have them.

They met again at scheduled intervals, arguing while the newly opened eyes of their kits watched on in confusion. Finally, one night he came and took them from her, bringing some of his cats to keep her away as he carried them off himself. He assured her that they'd be well fed, a female had just had kittens in his group and was more than happy to take them. She struggled under the cats keeping her down; it took three to keep her in place, she was so fueled by her hope at getting them, somehow, back, if only should could bush them off her and leap at Frostspeckle...

Once he was out of sight with her three, mewling sons she was let go. She stumbled back, exhausted from her efforts, but gave chance anyways. She eventually lost them in the chaos of the city.

The camp was hidden; she had no idea where it was, and so she didn't find her kits.

- - -

Belle walked the streets alone again.

Those days, oh those happy days- frolicking with Frostspeckle in the park in the snow covered grounds, staring into his warm eyes, burning like small fires, her relief when she was saved from starving his his kind help. It had been different then. She didn't know about his gang. She only knew he was handsome, kind and brave, and that he took pity on her in her fallen, hungered state as well as her mother and siblings. When spring came he offered to show her new sights and travel with him, and she happily obliged; then, their kits were born, in the city streets. He vanished one night- came back and said his father had been killed.

"I need to go back... I... never told you who I am, I guess. My father left his group to me."

She recalls those words; the words which shattered her misguided dreams to shreds.

Now she didn't care for Frostspeckle, only those kits, and yet it still hurt so much that he'd changed so much, so quickly.

- - -

Belle left the city and searched for her mother and siblings- they'd been a family of five, her father long dead it was her, her mother, two brother and one sister. She knew they'd welcome her back, provided she found them. And she did; still living under the park benches, eating scraps, slow pigeons and whatever the humans threw to them at rare occasions.

It wasn't the same with them, somehow, and although she didn't quite admit the whole story, her family knew she'd changed, and for the worse.

- - -

No peace with Frostspeckle- no peace with her kits! No peace with her family either; she felt restlesss and every night was haunted by the sight of Frostspeckle carrying away three, furry bundles, crying out for her, making every sleep a restless one. Finally one night she left; didn't tell her siblings where she was going, nor woke her mother. She stealthily swept through the forest, her paws soon propelling her slender frame into a leap as she reached the wall surrounding the place. She didn't look back as she dove into the darkness of the streets, heading for somewhere; who knows where.

- - -

She walked for days, hunting and scavenging where she could. She didn't know what she was doing, she just existed in a perpetual, dumbfounded dream; that was how it all felt since her kittens were taken, a dream. Thankfully her actual dreams subsided into the usual surreal landscapes of the unconscious. The pain was subsiding, to some degree. It was all numbness now.

She recovered some sense of self after several days of eating little, to nothing. She'd reached the forest famished and sickly, and stared into the water; what looked back wasn't her, was it? It looked like a phantom of a forest- twigs and matted, tangled fur that was muddied, hanging over a thin frame. It shocked her to see herself looking so poorly, and the numbness gave way, slightly, and the pain returned.

She let herself cry out over the water that night, listening to the nearby waterfall cascade down into the ocean. It was beautiful- so beautiful and peaceful. After her outburst of tears and angry howls she lay down, caressed by gentle, swaying grasses, reminding her of her mother's gentle grooming over he ears when she was bit a child.

- - -

What awoke her was the smell of prey. It was a strong scent, and she started up in a hazy, half awake jolt, surprised to find someone had shoved a mouse under her nose.

Without any questions she wolfed it down, her hunger making her not think clearly. She felt the stare of eyes on her pelt; two young toms were sitting next to her, gawking as this scraggly feline finished off the mouse within minutes.

"... Uh, and you are." One asked when she'd finished. He was a larger sized red tabby, his white and red pelt recalling Frostspeckle to mind, briefly. For a second she thought it was one of her sons, grown and with her again, but the age didn't correspond; this cat looked to be around nine to eleven months old, give or take. Her kits would only be two months, maybe even less, by now- and yet the toms' appearance was so like her mate, and so like her youngest she nearly cried afresh.

She looked to the river; it churned besides her, it's rushing, splashing sounds music to her ears. She felt an odd attachment to it; it had let her grieve at it's banks. It's refection had showed her herself, after two moons of dizzying confusion.

"River." She said softly. Then, more strongly, as Belle let go of her old self, and consigned it to the grave. "... My name is River."

- - -

The two cats who fed her in her time of need were Fishpaw and Piccolopaw. They were apprentices of NocturneClan, and for a few days, they kept her presence hushed. She washed her grief and her mud, the mud caked on her pelt, away in the river the next day. They helped her get food, then, as she gained strength, attended hunts with her, and that was how she was finally revealed to the rest of the clan.

It was autumn now. Painful memories of a past autumn, with her family, hungry, returned, and she instinctively hunted fiercely for the clan which welcomed her. They named her Riverwhisker, for her keen hunting abilities. The clan celebrated this newcomer's fervor and will to live. She'd already regained some lost weight and her pelt was beautiful once more! And every day, if she could slip away, she'd sit by the river, watching as it cascaded down the rocks, into the ocean- and she felt, as the days past, that the river carried Frostspeckle's betrayal farther and farther away.

Perhaps, if she met him again, and her kits were still safe, somewhere, she could even forgive him. The only thing she kept with her was the hope she'd see them again, grown and healthy but it was less painful now. It was a happy wish of what was to come!
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.

- John 13:34-35

The day you died, a part of me went with you. I never knew how much I loved you until I grieved for you.

Finally, finally Iris was free from their hold. No longer would she be stamped down day by day, forced to stand by his side in a loveless union for a clan she despised.

Her lungs filled with the crisp fall air, and the rising sun filled her with new hope. This... this was good.

...Right?

A brush against her leg. She looked down, and her heart melted at the sight of her kit, fur puffed up from the cold. She curled her thick tail around his form and rasped her tongue over his fragile head. He pressed closer to her side, and a rough purr rose within her as she looked down at the very reason why she was so adamant to leave. She knew this, now. “My strong, little tom.”

Right.

“Mama, mama, look at the stars! They’re so pretty, mama.” In his excitement, his little form toddled a little ways away to push himself up on a nearby rock.

She purred. “They are. Starclan is always watching over us, you know.”

“Wow…”

She purred again, louder this time as her heart ached in her love for him. She twitched her whiskers, just once, before calling him over. “You need to nurse, sweetheart. Then it’s time for bed.”

Dutiful as always, he padded over to lay against her soft stomach, but turned his head away as she curled around him. “I’m not hungry though, mama.”

A thin thread of annoyance tickled the base of her spine, and she couldn’t help but be a little bit confused. He hadn’t nursed from her since they’d left, after all. Was he at the point where he needed to be weaned already? But, at the site of his wide eyes, she could never stay angry. “Dear, you do need to eat, just a little bit. I won’t be able to hunt for us until well into tomorrow.”

Her heart merely shrugged his shoulders and buried into her side. “Can I eat in the morning, instead?”

His small, vulnerable tone made her cave quickly. “If you insist. You have to be quick about it though. They’ll catch onto our trail soon enough.”

“Okay.”

Morning came, and when Iris peeked out of their hiding spot, their scent shot a thrill of fear down her spine. She was quick to herd him out of the den, and she and her kit vanished into the undergrowth.

It never occurred to her that he never asked to nurse.

——

When Iris came into the twoleg town looking for aid, this definitely wasn’t what she expected to hear. After so many weeks of evading her old clan’s pursuit, they finally, finally gave up. And now, she was being subjected to this.

Iris, throat filled with dread, looked down at the lounging old queen, soaking up what little rays of sunlight her long fur could get.

Another clan?”

The old she-cat raised a brow at her incredulous tone. “Well now, hun, don’t discount them too early. You said you were seeking protection, right? The groups in the city don’t take to kindly to outsiders. The clan down in the flood valleys offer asylum to those looking for it. And from where I’m sitting, it looks like you need it.” The older female cocked her head at the blue molly before her frown deepened. “Say, are you sure you’re alright? You’re barely skin and bones from what I can see.”

Iris couldn’t help but feel her hackles raise at the comment. “I’m fine, thank you.” The nerve of this she-cat! First she barely recognizes the existence of Iris’s own child, and then she has the audacity to comment on her looks. Why would the old she-cat care? But, but. Iris wasn’t raised with poor manners. “I might be a little underweight, but I do have a kitten to feed. Surely you would understand that.” With that said, Iris curled her tail tighter around her paws, where her little tom sat under the safety of her fur. Always so shy, he stayed silent as Iris spoke to the she-cat.

The older female frowned in bemusement. “Kitten? What are you even—”

Iris’s patience snapped. “The kitten right in front of you! Ma’am, no offense, but you act like you’ve never seen a kit before!”

Iris could clearly see the old female’s eyes flash in subdued anger, but then suddenly widen in realization. Finally. The old bat must be near blind, Iris supposed. But, curiously enough, the old she-cat when silent, for one long moment, and her gaze became unreadable. But then, she finally grunted, before gently saying, “Trust me, child. Wherever you came from, I assure you this clan will be nothing like that. If nothing else, they’ll help you get back on your feet and get you fed. They did the same for me.”

Iris forced her fur to lie flat. But, against her better judgement, she could feel her resolve crumbling. Though she would never return to her old clan, a clan would mean that her heart wouldn’t have to sleep without food. It couldn’t be that bad if a loner like this female had nothing but good words about the group. “Alright. I’ll go to them.” A leap of faith is what got her away from her old clan, after all. She had to do it, if only for her little heart.

Right?

——

Iris kneaded her claws into the soft earth as she waited with the striped deputy. The first contact went well enough; she was lucky to stumble across a patrol with the actual deputy in it, and with one look at her, the large tom was quick to send off his patrol back to camp.

It must’ve been because how she eyed the prey in his maw, because he silently set the plump fish at her paws before introducing himself as Lightningsong. When her kitten peered around her flank to look up at the deputy, she chewed off a piece of the fish for her little heart to eat. By now, she was well accustomed to selfish loner cats looking at her oddly when she set aside food for her little one, but she felt a little irked at the weird look the deputy gave her too. And she thought that it was universal that clans took care of their own. “You’ve never seen a queen give food to her own kit?”

The deputy frowned, but before he could open his maw to speak, the bushes rustled, and out stepped the supposed leader.

She paused in her eating to give the small cat a once-over. Her fur prickled self-consciously as she fought to instinctively avert her eyes, but his benign green gaze emboldened her. She cleared her throat before she sat up. “Sir, My name is Iris. I would like to request temporary asylum for me and my kit, if you’re willing to provide it.”

The leader’s gaze softened as he, too, gave her a once-over, but then he raised a brow before speaking. “And where is your kit?”

Iris withheld a sigh. This song and dance again. “Sir, with all due respect, my kit is sitting right beside me.”

The leader’s eyes narrowed suspiciously, but Iris stood her ground as his eyes flicked to her side. He looked straight at her little tom, but his gaze passed over her kit before flickering back up to her face. His face smoothed out, as unreadable as the old she-cat’s in the twoleg town. The leader motioned to Lightningsong, and spoke a few hushed words to the larger tom. Iris could barely pick out the name “Lilyfrost” before the striped deputy nodded and disappeared further into the territory. The cinnamon tom turned back to her, and stepped up to her before speaking. “Iris, I’d like you to tell me about what happened to you in the last few weeks. What led you here?”

Iris hesitated, but as she felt her heart press against her side, she knew a little bit of information was a small price to pay for her kit.

So, she told him.

——

“You see why I can’t go back. My own clan going to kill my kit because he wasn’t… wasn’t perfect enough for them. They hurt him so badly, I—”

“Iris.” The small tom cut her off in her tirade. It felt like a flood finally releasing all that emotion, and she felt a hysteric, desperate laugh bubble up in her chest. Hah, flood. Like the clan she was about to enter, right?

Her paws were shaking. “And, and now, no one will even look twice at my own kit! Did that wretched clan truly taint him so badly as to leave a permanent scar on him for the rest of his life? There is nothing wrong with my kit!

“Iris!” The leader’s voice boomed over her raging thoughts like a thunderclap. “Iris, please, look beside you. There is no kit beside you.”

Her voice cracked with emotion, and barely a whisper escaped in her turmoil. “M-my, my kit, he… He...

“Iris, I am so sorry.”

No, no. Her kit was not dead. He could not be dead.

...Right?

——

Iris looked down at her side. Her kit was no longer there.

He never was there, was he?

Right.

Congrats!
