Sagittarius originates from Latin. It is a combination of sagitta (which means arrow) and ārius. (which is an ending that can mean someone who is using something). For example, aviculārius can mean bird keeper.

Refers to both the crocus flower and a mythological figure named Krokos. The former is the source of the spice saffron, sweet and treasured higher even than gold. The latter was either a man so dissatisfied with an affair of his that he asked the gods to turn him into a flower, or a young man in a relationship with Hermes that died during an accident while playing discus (also turned into a flower to honor him).
