presentMatisse woke up to the sound of rain pattering against his window, thunder (still) grumbling gently in the distance. He felt at peace for a moment, but as that moment ended he remembered what had happened the day before, and his heart ached. It ached more than he ever knew it could, and he realized that he was crying again. He thought back to the day before, torturing himself by running through the events once more.
the day beforeMatisse woke up to the sound of rain pattering against his window, thunder grumbling gently in the distance. He snuggled a bit deeper into his blankets, but eventually rolled out of bed. As much as he wanted to be, he couldn't be late to the airport. His girlfriend was coming home after a month away, visiting distant family overseas, and he had missed her terribly. He had made a large 'welcome home!' sign, complete with bold blue letters, balloons, and lots of glitter to catch her eye. She always said that blue was her favorite color because it reminded her of him. He thought the sentiment was quite sweet, but he knew the way she looked at the sky, and that much of her love for the color blue was because of that. (perhaps both though, who could really say).
After throwing on a blue t-shirt, he trotted downstairs, heating up some pizza from the night before. Gooey cheese bubbled furiously in the microwave, and the glamorous smell of leftovers filled the kitchen. As he bit into the slice, he couldn't help but curse as he burnt his tongue. Realizing the time, he grabbed his sign and hopped in the car, abandoning his pizza to the counter. After about 30 minutes of driving, he had made it to the airport. His heart raced as the clock ticked on, waiting for the text that she had landed. Just as expected, the plane touched down at 9:33 AM.
text logMatisse couldn't help but grin at the cheesy emojis, he loved his goofy girlfriend and the little ways she managed to brighten his day. Tucking his phone into his pocket, he stood up and stretched, getting ready to reunite with his love. He expected a bit of wait, as she still had to take a bus to get to the main terminal of the airport where he was waiting. In the meantime, he went and bought a sweet blue icee, effectively dyeing his tongue blue as well.
As he headed back to where the passengers would be reentering to grab their luggage, he was stopped by a security guard with a crooked nose and a stern looking face. "You can't leave. The airport is on lock-down, please calmly make your way to a seat, and you will be updated with more information soon."
In that instant, Matisse felt a cold shock run through his body, this time not from the icee. What if something bad had happened? Did airports
usually go on lock-down?? Was he freaking out over nothing?? He rubbed his clammy hands off on his pants and made his way to an open seat, looking up at the television. The news broadcast was inaudible, but showed a breaking news update in subtitles.
"
airport shuttle accident leaves 3 in critical condition"
He began rapidly texting, his fingers flying across the keyboard, blue message after blue message sending. "i know I'm going to see you soon, but text me asap" "are you okay they said there was an accident" "please text back"
he spent an agonizing 20 minutes waiting, heart feeling as if it would explode from nerves. It was in that moment that his phone lit up. Before he could be comforted though, he saw it was a call from his girlfriend's mother. Hand trembling, he missed twice before he could hit the accept button. It was silent before he heard a stifled sob. "Please come to the hospital as soon as you get the chance I'm sure you've heard by now" and with that, the call ended, and the sign fell to the floor.
presentMatisse is blue. He feels blue, all he can see is blue. And he has promised that every day he will visit his love and talk to her, welcome her home, until she finally wakes up, and he can hold her in his arms again.
