Why do they Love/Hate Christmas?:
Caine had always been a giving kind of Kiuii. He loved the warm feeling he'd get when a loved one was pleased to receive something from him, and seeing the joy in their eyes. Christmas was, of course, his favourite holiday: an entire day filled with gift-giving? What's not to like?!
He woke up that one Christmas morning in his big burrow brimming with familiar excitement. His presents were already stacked high under the tree in his cave, all with the same label on them:
"To Soren. Love from, your big brother."
Soren was all Caine had since their parents' disappearance. The brothers had brought each other up, so the least Caine could do was give Soren as many gifts as he could ever want.
"Do you like them?" Caine asked his sibling as he emerged from his sleeping pile.
"I haven't even opened them yet!" Soren giggled, but his eyes were bright with amazement.
Caine grinned and picked up a particularly colourful box with his teeth, presenting it to Soren. "Here's the one I think you'll love most," he said.
The younger Kiuii tore it open. His jaw dropped. On the floor by his paws lay a wonderful rainbow kite.
"It's the one Dad was making you before he and Mum vanished," Caine explained, even though he could tell Soren knew already. He could see the tears in his eyes. "I finished it for you."
"Caine..." Soren launched into a hug, knocking them both over. "Thank you, brother, thank you!" He cried, licking his face all over. He bounded over to the kite, grabbing it and running out of the burrow. "I'm going to go play with it right now!"
"Just remember not to stray into predator territory!" Caine called after him.
Once he'd started flying it, Soren managed to keep hold of the kite for a full hour before the reel was yanked from his mouth by a large gust of wind. He shrieked, but regained composure and took off after his beloved toy. The kite was fast, but the young Kiuii was faster. He raced through the forest, never taking his eyes off the kite through the gaps in the branches, not bothering to check if the floor below his thundering paws was clear. Not noticing the sign he'd passed a while back, which would have warned him he had left Kiuii domain.
Caine wasn't worried about Soren until he didn't come back that evening for Christmas dinner – he never missed that. He felt a sick sense of dread in his stomach and grabbed a lantern, loping off into the forest. He ran for miles until he came to the sign for predator territory. He swallowed the fearful lump in his throat and continued on at a trot, looking about him warily. He knew this place: this was where his parents had ventured during the drought a few years back to look for water. They had never come home.
Caine yelped suddenly, dropping the lantern with a crash. Something sharp had cut his foot. Carefully, he nudged the lantern into a standing position and looked down at what had hurt him.
The broken, tattered remnants of a rainbow kite lay there in the mud. Deep, gouging claw marks had lacerated through the wood and canvas.
Caine backed away, shaking. "Soren..." He choked. He took a deep breath. "Soren?!" he screamed out into the darkness. Nobody replied, but a pair of red-rimmed eyes glared out at him from between the tree trunks.
Caine snatched up the lantern and what was left of the kite and fled, so fast that the tears flew from his eyes. Once he'd reached his burrow, he jumped inside and covered the entrance with leaves, then sat underneath the Christmas tree amongst all his brother's now never-to-be-opened presents, weeping.
He never celebrated Christmas again.
Oh my God I worked so hard on that
