The gene responsible for causing the flaxen mutation in chestnut horses isn't fully understood yet! The flaxen gene can be carried in non-chestnut horses, and the strength of the flaxen trait (how pale the mane and tail are) can be completely different from the parents! If two mildly flaxen horses breed, it's still possible to have a strongly flaxen offspring.
