Event Day #1

Postby withtheroses » Mon Sep 24, 2018 4:40 am

Silver Horse: <3
Silver Horse Fact: Silver horses are also called taffys! Or if it’s a silver dapple, chocolate. These names, taffy and chocolate originated from the Mountain Horse breed!

Optional Event:

Haiku:

Silver is like the bark
of a birch tree, smooth and pretty
but also strong and tough

Short Story:

Gigahai's Test
Prt. 1

Gigahai’s nostrils pumped air into his lungs, his hooves beating a rhythm upon the ground. Will I be able to outrun them? He thought over and over. His eyes scanned the forest floor, as he leaped and dodged all the items that could hamper his escape. C’mon c’mon almost lost them! Gigahai’s mind flashed furiously as the blood pounded in his ears. He closed his eyes for only a split second, and upon opening them saw himself face to face with a cliff. No no no! He screamed internally, as he looked for a way down. About 20 feet below was a small set of ledges, tiny in size, but by the looks of it sturdy. Gigahai quickly looked up as the sound of his pursuers hoofbeats drew closer, and saw the steely flash of eight sets of eyes bearing down on him. Well I guess it’s now or never... He dropped to the ground, and pushed himself off of the cliff. As he hit the first ledge, he groaned in pain. This was not how I was excepting this day to go. Quickly scrambling to his feet, he started lurching down the ledges. He cursed under his breath as his hind leg slipped off. “That was close,” Gigahai mumbled as he heard the rocks faintly echo as they hit the bottom. The sound of arguing emitted from above him, as his would-be captors yelled at each other. That should keep them busy for a while. Oh and look we are at the bottom! Only ten more miles of unforgiving wilderness to go. His thoughts dripped with sarcasm as he leaped from the last ledge onto the mossy forest floor. A welcome relief indeed, he thought as he padded along, the moss and heavy coating of pine needles muffling the sounds of his great hooves. He jumped as he heard the sounds of four bodies hit the ledges, and the sound of hooves on rock. How did they figure it out so fast? Gigahai started running again, weaving a trail through the woods as prey does to confuse its hunter. He didn’t stop running until he ran into yet another obstacle, which of course was met with a heavily sarcastic, “Great.” Pacing up and down on the bank, looking for a way across, he came upon a precariously slippery and wobblily log, although for him it was more a branch. If I go fast enough I should be able to make it, but if I don’t... Gigahai gulped as he looked at the swift current and jagged rocks that would be his demise. Don’t over think it, don’t over think...IT!!!!!!!!! He leaped across the log as fast as he could, swaying this way and that, screaming like a new-born the whole entire time. Gigahai rolled off the log and kicked it into the river, so it would be smashed up on the rocks. “I’d be surprised if they couldn’t hear me screaming from miles away.” With a heavy sigh and a eye roll he struck off again....

Gigahai's Test
Prt. 2

Gigahai winced as he continued onwards, limping a little from where he hit the ledge. Why did YOU decide to rear your ugly head now? He grumbles at the ache and rolls his shoulder. At least we are about half-way through this god forsaken forest, and then I will be home. He looks around as night falls, and as the shadows close in, a shiver runs across his coat. The more he walked, the more he stumbled, and the more his shoulder hurt. I need to find a place to sleep soon, I won’t fit in any bushes though, so where could I sleep? “Oh!” Gigahai gasped as he came upon a beautiful silver lake, the moon creating a mirror on its surface. “It’s gorgeous...” He says quietly as he gazes in wonder, “But how is this any use for me?” He twitches his ear in irritation, but as he does so, he picks up the sound of a waterfall. Why not? With a shrug he turns in its direction, and slowly limps towards it. The cold water could help with this god-awful ache. As soon as his hooves hit the gravely shore, he lurches into the cool, crisp water. “Ahhhhhhh,” He closes his eyes in bliss, “This is fabulous.” Striking out with his now feather-light legs, Gigahai swims over to the waterfall, and to his surprise he swims right through its silver waters. Well this was unexpected, he chuckles as he looks around at the small cave hidden behind the waterfall. He tries to scramble out of the water and onto the slippery shelf of rock. As he heaves his great body from the water, he slips and hits the rock with a loud thunk. “Ow!” He shouts into the rock as he rolls towards the cave on the slippery surface. Trying to stand up, he splays his legs out like a foal who just found its long, ungainly appendages. Slipping and sliding he manages to enter the cave and get onto dry rock. Shaking himself off, Gigahai snorts at his own clumsiness. Continuing into the cave, he finds that it exits about 30 feet from the lake, on the opposite side he came from. Hidden in some thick bushes, the whole cave was a secret safe-haven for Gigahai to stay the night. Turning away from the exit, he plods back towards the entrance, where he settles behind some rocks to sleep as well as one could when they are being hunted.

As the sun bounces its rays off the waterfall, Gigahai slowly opens one eye, wincing as the bright sunlight hits him in the face. Getting up and stretching, he licks his lips as he realizes he hasn’t had food for over a day. As his stomach growls, he cements the need to look for food, but before that he needed to check something. Dragging his hooves up the tunnel, he peeks out of the bushes and looks around. Looks like I still have a leading on them. Wiggling through the bushes, he pops out of the exit and back into the forest. Snuffing around on the ground, he starts to dig, unearthing some tender roots. Ripping them from the earth, he slowly munches on the roots, careful not to eat to fast and get a belly ache. Finishing his meal, he pivots towards home, and sets a steady pace as he hears the distant whinnies from his pursuers. Walking through the woodlands, he reaches a large, tall grassed field, stretching as far as the eye could see. He followed the dark hair line of the forest both to the left and right, until it curved out of view. “Well I guess I’m just going to have to walk out in the open,” Gigahai thought out loud as he cast a distasteful glance at the wide-open grassy area. Tentative he stretched out one of his forelegs and tried to carefully set it down but getting ahead of him self he set it down to fast, and with a yelp tumbled forwards into the grass. Well this meadow is lower than I thought. Getting up with as much dignity as he could muster, he struck off again, looping and twisting his trail, being very careful to slip between the stalks as to not leave a too obvious trail. Continuing this way for a while, he catches the smell of wood again. Deciduous this time instead of evergreen. That’ll mean fallen leaves everywhere, gosh darn autumn. He snorts in agitation as he thinks of the trail they could leave behind. Picking up a trot, he dodges the sharp grass as well as he can, and bursts out of the meadow into the leaf strewn forest panting. Shaking his coat, he starts to feel the stinging from all the tiny scratches he obtained thanks to his meadow trek. Turning around to check the whereabouts of his hunters, he spots them halfway through the meadow. “Sh-,” Gigahai curses under his breath, as he turns and runs blindly full force with whatever energy he had left towards home. Branches whip at his face and legs, roots seem to reach out to wrap around his ankles, mud tries to make him slip, but somehow, he is left running. Lungs burning with what felt like acid, muscles screaming like a dying bird, hooves aching like someone had lit a fire beneath them, a war cry rising in his throat, eyes wild, Gigahai plowed on. Running out of the forest and through a stream, the cries of his captors ringing in his ears, his gate stretching longer with each stride, until he felt like he was flying. Whipping back into the forest, the leaves creating a tornado behind him as he ran, his mind raced with thoughts no one should think, the fear of being hunted and the fear of death. Nostrils wider than the rings of Saturn, he bursts from the forest, and the onlookers watch in awe as this beast straight from the tales mares tell their foals to keep them in line, barrels straight towards them. The war cry that breaks from the confines of his throat makes everyone jump, and the look of pure fiery wildness in his eyes makes even the fiercest warriors knees tremble. Skidding to a halt in front of one of the matriarchs, Gigahai stands head down panting. “Well done young colt, you are the only ‘survivor’. From this day on Gigahai, you will be known as Blood on the River, a fitting name for a true warrior like yourself. You proved yourself today worthy, and you shall be remembered as such.” Hades turns to the crowd and they all start chanting, “Blood on the River! Blood on the River!” Gigahai looks up and over at his fellow colts who got caught and smiles as he sees them chanting as well. Now this is more like how I was hoping this day would go….

Daily Objective:

Mare and Foal: Adorable babes <3

Optional Daily Objective:

Image

Step 1-3

  • Get generic brand twisted pretzels and set as many pretzels as you want turkeys on a microwaveable plate
  • For every turkey set out three candy corn (coloring is up to you) and a Hershey kiss
  • For every turkey also obtain one either yellow or orange M&M, and two extra small candy eyes

Step 3-5

  • Place a Hershey's kiss dead center on each pretzel
  • Have the adult microwave for 5 seconds or until chocolate is soft, BUT NOT melted

Step 5-9

  • Carefully take out plate and quickly poke three candy corn into the Hershey's Kiss at the rounded end of the pretzel to create the tail feathers
  • Add an M&M on its skinny side so it takes up about half of the kiss making sure it is the half farthest from the candy corn
  • On the half nearest to the tail add your candy eyes close together and close to the beak
  • Make sure you do this before the chocolate solidifies again so everything can stick

Finished Product

Why I Chose This

  • We used to do this a lot in girl scouts, and it just reminds me of those good old days

Tale:

Home?

Ever since my naming happened, people have started to look at me differently, it’s funny how something like that can change your life forever. But this big event also means something I have been dreading for awhile, adoption. I shiver even at the thought of it. Everyone says it is amazing to finally find a home, but I thought the meadow was my home, why should it have to change? The prospect adopters are coming in tomorrow, and Persephone tells me not to worry, but how can I not? Hades tells me it is a proud thing that a colt like myself would be adopted, and I guess that calms my nerves a little. I have little over a day to ready myself, and I know I won’t be getting any sleep tonight. Talking about sleep it looks like it is time to bed down, well goodnight I guess...

Ergh why is the sunlight so bright. Y ‘know mornings are always tough for me especially when Hades is breathing moist air into your face and practically yelling into your ear to, “Get up you fuzz brain, it’s time.” But oh how wonderful sleep is at this hour, and...did he just lick me?!?! I think he did! Well there goes my sleeping in, great. “Alright love get up, there you go.” Persephone at this hour is much more bearable than Hades. Walking over to the adoption site is quiet the daunting thing I’ll have you know, even more so then outrunning four blood-thirsty warriors. Honestly, walking what was no more than 50 feet, I had two mental breakdowns, a spiritual journey, and cursed almost every Raj to have ever been born, at least once. What an adventure am I right? Being herded by your fellow horses into a wooden corral isn’t fun either, especially when you try to fight back and lose. As I stand here in the middle, dumbly, let me explain a few things, one my name is Gigahai or Blood on the River, but...uh... I prefer Gigahai, two I will continue to express my distaste loudly, even though Hades is glaring at me, and three if I stand here and look dumb no one will want me right? I hope so at least. Oh, and look we are down five adopters, only four more to go. Phew we almost did it...wait what. NO NO NO! Is that a adopt sign I see? You have got to be kidding me, the last person too! Oh my gosh just my luck, of course it’s last minute. Wait what are they doing with that weird leather contraption? Are you trying to put it on my face? You have got to be bloody mad. “STOP YELLING AND LET THEM HALTER YOU, YOU FOOL!” Papa Hades bombards my ears as I submit to the ‘haltering’. Okay well its not as bad as I thought, and uh why are they tugging on me? Wait you want me to follow you? If there are treats then I will. With dignity I walk towards my ever impending doom, because I’m a proud boy, am I not? Sigh, things can only get worse. Woah there human I almost stepped on you, and uh, where are we? Is that my adopter? She’s pretty by human standards, high cheek bones, glittering blue eyes, and hair like hay, wait is it hay let me try... Oh, and she has a pretty laugh! Also her hair is not hay if anyone was asking. She doesn’t coddle me with her voice, but she says in a sweet tone that I should call her Lil, and so I try. There’s that pretty laugh again! I think I made her happy. Maybe this whole adventure won’t be so bad after all. She tells me that she has other Raj that would love to meet me, and that there are other horses that aren’t Raj’s who would also love to be my friend. Im more excited than scared, and I barely notice when she loads me up into the trailer to take me home, there is a word I didn’t think I would associate with this process, until now. My mind spins with what home could look like, but we start moving before I can finish these thoughts. In about twelve hours of driving, I’ll find out anyways.

Event Day #4

Postby withtheroses » Thu Sep 27, 2018 7:16 am

Daily Objective:

In-Hand Draft Horse: Dapples <3

Optional Daily Objective:

Short Story:

Here We Go...

Hi there person who can somehow read my thoughts, the name’s Gigahai. I was born, uh some time ago I guess? I don’t know my mom or my dad, it’s a little hazy what happened to them, but all I know is that the herd, or the Raj’s, always took care of me. They say I am really loud and annoying, but I just think I’m awkward. The answer varies depending on who you ask, Hades will tell you I have drive, and Persephone will just laugh a knowing laugh. The others will argue about if I’m loud, or just obnoxious, or both. I am a colt now, and in a few days I will have my test. What is the test you ask? I shiver thinking about it, but it is where all the colts with enough bravery (not me), and an urge to want to have nightmares for the rest of their lives (not me again) line up at the starting point, about fifteen miles from home. Behind them is a line of warriors, ten in total. And in front of them is, well, miles of unforgiving forest terrain. We colts get a head start of twenty-five minutes, and every time a warrior catches a colt, the colt is taken back to the meadow. That also means the warrior goes with. So the more horses that get out, the less warriors there are. I have heard that six other colts want to test if they are ready for their warrior name. While I went off on that limb I forgot to mention where you are trying to get too. The goal is to reach the meadow, all in one piece and without a happy warrior escorting you. If you’re the last one they don’t want to see a happy warrior trailing you, they want to see many bloodthirsty warriors running behind you like a stampede of rhinos. Oh, and I’m being called for the briefing, but before I go I should mention that none of us colts have ever set foot on the ‘course’, so no unfair advantages here!

Tale:

Home

I looked out of the trailers wide windows from the spacious stalls inside. The scenery flew past faster than even our fastest mare could run in a flat meadow. The hum of the engine and the slight rumble of the truck was a surprisingly soothing, but I shook myself awake so I could think about what I had just left behind. I smile as I remember the pride in Hade’s and Persephone’s eyes as we drove away. Oh how much I will miss all my family, the herd raised me and got me here, whether or not I thought it was good or bad, they always knew what was best. But then again, I had a new family waiting for me. What should they call me? Gigahai, Gigi (as the other colts called me), or my new name Blood on the River? Erm probably Gigahai for now I guess. When we get there what will I say? Am I just going to be my awkward self, or will it be natural? UGH to many thoughts for now. Guess I’ll just take a nap...zZzZzZz.

Woah what the—AHHHH WHAT’S HAPPENING?!?! With a smash I clonk into the side of the trailer as we abruptly stop. A worried Lil climbs in through the sleeping quarters. “I’m so sorry Gigahai! A stupid idiot thought it would be a great idea to try and cut in front of a truck with a horse trailer, and guess what happened? He crashed into another car trying to do the same thing. Lucky for us we managed to escape without injury.” As she looks around she mutters, “I’m just glad I paid extra for those padded walls.” I sigh with her and she laughs and gives me a scratch behind my ears. Oh! How’d she know the right spot! Before I could ask she has already slipped out of the trailer and into the trucks cab. The engine growls itself awake again, and we start moving. How long has it been? Maybe four hours? This was going to be a long ride. I drift in and out of sleep as we pass over the Appalachian Mountain Range and into the prairies. We stop from time to time so Lil can eat, relieve herself, and so I can get out and stretch my legs. She always remembers to refill my water, and give me food from time to time. About halfway through our journey, we stop at one of Lil’s friends stables so we can have a goodnights sleep. Lil is looking super tired and when I act concerned, she tells me she hasn’t had coffee all day, and that she’s fine. Well if she’s fine, then sleep here I come...snore.

Morning already? Really? I only slept like, six hours! C’mon Lil, don’t be cruel. “That’s more sleep than what many people get now a days you big teddy bear, so stop complaining.” She laughs, so I know she was only half serious. As I groggily pile into the trailer, I slowly munch my grain and drink my water. Today was going to be a slow day, I can tell. But before I know it, we are rumbling through the Cascades, the snow falling even this early. Shivering just thinking about the cold, I am glad I’m snug inside the trailer. As we drop into Eastern Washington, the snow turns into rain, classic Washington. I personally enjoy rain, the safety you feel as the drops cover you in a wet blanket. That was but a mere side note, because as we drive onwards, we get closer until, we are here! I see a sign that reads ‘Welcome to Rose Crest Stables’, and I hear the tires grip on a paved road. I look out at all the fenced paddocks and wonder which horses I will call my family. I startle as the road becomes gravel, and then as we stop my nerves return. Lil comes around the back and opens the trailers heavy doors, and I stare at her with a kind of panic. “Hey it will be fine boy. Just wait until you see your new home.” Lil murmurs calmingly into my ears, and I let out a easy snort. Lil leads me out of the trailer, and at first the light blinds me for a few seconds, but when I open them my eyes widen with disbelief. This gorgeous place is my home? The huge main stables, white clay and beautiful dark wood, sits glistening in the sunlight. The outdoor jumping and dressage arenas bustling with a flurry of activity. Lil looks at me with a knowing look. I am surprised though when she leads me deeper into the property, the smell of roses making me calmer. We pass through a hedge lined archway, that leads into a cobbled courtyard. I look around realizing that it is a square of four stables, and I fidget in place. Lil pats my neck and leads me through the courtyard and out the other archway. We pop out in front of huge pasture full of horses of different breeds. Lil opens the gate and lets me in. Hearing the shrill cries of the other horses I finally know I am home...

The Show Must Go On

Its been half a year since I first arrived at Rose Crest. Everything has been as sweet as a Honey Crisp apple, and all the horses, Raj or not, have become MY herd, and MY family. Lil has been working driving and in-hand with me, although I enjoy in-hand the most. It’s lots of fun to work closely with my mama. But! As we speak I am current getting all done up in draft fashion for my first show! Schooling only, but still! I am so excited I can’t wait, and Lil is glaring at me because I’m not letting her finish my braids. Sorry mom. She also says, that soon I will get my crop, the marking of a true stallion! Hee-hee I could jump for joy right now! Lil is making sure I am all shiny and perfectly groomed before we go. Chloe, one of the boarders and a student of Lil’s, is sitting up on the wash racks counter, laughing at my antics and helping out. Chloe is a awesome, and she’s going to come along with us to the show. Lil takes me out of the cross-ties and into the isle. Today is a big show day for the barn, and everyone is hustling around with things to do. We have quiet the line up of Lil’s horses being shown, but by their some of her students. Moon gives me a, “Good luck rookie,” and Candy sweetly says, “You’ll do great!” Amethyst walks past regally and with a wink utters a, “Looking good Gigahai. Blow them away.” Awe they are so sweet aren’t they. As we walk outside into the morning fog, the crunch of gravel is a satisfying touch. Stepping into the trailer, my hooves make muffled thuds on the matted floor. As I get tied up, I hear Moon, Candy and Amethyst being loaded up to fill the trailer. As we turn out of the driveway, I hear the other four trucks and trailers roll in behind us. It’s funny how they act like a herd, all sticking together. But, as we rumble towards our destination about an hour away, those simple, lighthearted thoughts leave my mind. Replacing them are thoughts of what you humans call stage fright. Moon, Candy and Amethyst all try to calm my nerves. I mumble back half-hearted replies, wishing I could be alone to my thoughts. We rattle ever closer to the final destination and I still worry. Getting to the show grounds, I realized I didn’t have room for such thoughts. Lil came and got me and the others out of the trailer. As I got harnessed up, I watched the other competitors go into the outdoor and come out. Moon went off to do cross-country, Candy went with Chloe to do driving, and Amethyst went to flash her colors in dressage. Then, I was the only one left. They called my name over the loudspeakers, and Lil came and got me. We lined up at the entrance. It was time. I start almost trotting in place. A reassuring hand grounds me again. We enter the ring at a walk. I make sure to match my stride length to the other drafts in front of me. As we halt I breathe steadily, stay calm me. The others trot around the ring once. Next it’s our turn. We start to move, and it feels like I am flying. Lil matches my stride with her long legs. The group is asked to walk around the arena once more before we halt again. Judges look all over us, and one horse gets mouthy. The blood rushes in my ears as I watch the other horses preform their individual shows. “Blood on the River and Lilian Rosewood next please.” Oh god here we go. As we walk our straight line away from the judge, I make sure to place my hooves as if I am walking a tight rope. As we turn around, I pick up the trot right away. Lil smiles and we head straight towards the judge again. She steps out of the way before we bowl her over. Lil trots me to the back of the line, and as everyone finishes up, we walk one more circle. Stopping again for what seems like the millionth time, we slowly line up stacked in the arena, facing the judge. In her hands she holds the rosettes. Oh, those cursed rosettes that can either break or make you. “In fourth place we have GSS Hideaway, congratulations!” Well we must have gotten, like eight then. “In third place we have Something Sweet, congratulations!” Yep, last place for sure. “In second place we have Huckleberry Finn, congratulations!” Yay a Rose Crest horse placed top three! “And in first place we have...” Get the pain over with already lady. “Blood on the River of Rose Crest Stables!” WHAT? The sound of my wildly beating heart drowns out the sound of applause from the crowd, I barely hear Lil saying thank you as we received our rosette. I can scarcely remember walking out of the arena to the trailer. When we get there I snap out of my daze, and I whinny in shock. Lil lets out a laugh and swings onto my back. She gets me into canter, and we gallop around the open cross-country practice field. Still in harness, we romp around, Lil with her hands up at times laughing hysterically. She guides me towards a jump, and for the first time ever, I jump with a human on my back. It felt like I was soaring. Lil takes me over a few more before we turn back and trot up to the trailer. I notice Moon, Candy and Amethyst are back, Moon with a first place, Candy with a second and Amethyst with a first also. Lil swings off light as a feather, “What a day boy. You’ll have quiet the story to tell the gang when you get back!” That indeed I will...
