Lys turned and looked around the area and whimpered as all she could see was darkness. She sank to the ground and held her knees to her chest, crying as her vision had faded away. She was afraid.
Lys woke up, sitting up in bed and looked around frantically. It was only a dream. A nightmare. She stood weakly and dipped her paws in the basin near her bed. There was nothing to worry about. She splashed water on her face to wake up fully and then slipped on a simple cloak to keep away the chill. She walked to the door to leave her room when she heard voices on the other side of the door.
"I heard there is a new recruit." A male voice spoke and another chipped in.
"Me too. Wonder what they are like?"
Lys waited for them to leave before entering the hallway and quickly making her way to the tower. Hades had given her free reign on the castle but had specifically given her use of the alchemist tower. While she was not an alchemist, she did enjoy working with the different chemicals and poisons that resided in the tower and so that was where she spent her time. Most of the other angels had never even seen her, only a fleeting glimpse of her purple cloak vanishing around the corner as she turned to go up the tower steps. She didn't even know any of the other angels besides Charon who would visit her occasionally with different potions from the surface.
Lys closed the heavy wooden door behind her as she entered the lab and viewed the different bottles lined on the shelf. She was looking for one bottle in particular and sighed in relief as she found it.
Sight was scrawled on the label messily and she picked up the bottle carefully. She opened the lid and tilted her head back, letting a single drop of the potion land in each of her eyes before replacing the stopper and putting it back on the shelf.
With that chore finished, she began her work. Mixing and combining different ingredients until she had made her chosen poisons and potions, labeling each carefully before she began to clean. No one ever thought of the cleaning as part of a chemists or poisoners job but she prided herself in keeping the lab as tidy as she could. Of course there was nothing she could do about the long spilled potions that had stained the floor or eaten away at a part of the shelf so it never looked clean in the lab, but she did her best.
Lys slipped to the desk in the back of the lab to record her experiments and lost herself in the writing. A dark figure stood in the entrance to the lab and coughed slightly to get her attention.
"Oh, Hades. Welcome. What can I do for you?" Lys asked, looking at the lord of Death curiously.
"Just came to check on you Akhlys. How are your eyes doing?" Hades asked softly and Lys shrugged.
"The potion helps a great deal. Thank you." Lys motioned to the bottle on the shelf and Hades nodded with a smile.
"I am glad it helps. How about your nightmares?" He asked, moving to look at all the different bottles lining the shelves.
"Still happen almost every night." She hesitated slightly, "I don't know why I fear it so much. I know you wouldn't let me suffer like that again yet I continue to be terrified of it."
Hades shrugged, "We all have our own fears. But you mustn't let them control you. Take me for example. I am afraid of losing my loved ones. I am so afraid that I have Cel's spirit locked up in an earring so I may never lose her. You just need to find what works for you to help manage your fear." Hades moved beside her and rested his arm on her shoulders, "I cannot tell you what to do but I can help you in anyway you need."
Hades and Lys sat like that for a moment and then he fixed a number in one of her equations, "Here. Try that."
Lys smiled and nodded, "Thank you."
After Hades left, she finished up her work and then went back to her room to get some rest for the night. That night, her nightmare was different. Instead of going blind, she realized a way to use her knowledge to help others who were suffering. She sat up quickly that morning and rushed to speak to Hades.
All the other angels stared in awe as Lys ran past them, trying to figure out who this viscet was. Lys rushed into the throne room to find Hades speaking to a few of the angels calmly. When he saw her, he paused and gave her a questioning look.
"Lord Hades, I figured out a way to work with my fear!" Lys walked over to him, suddenly realizing just how many eyes were on her. Hades nodded for her to go on and she took a deep breath, "I wish to take the sight of those who are suffering so they become calm. So they will die in a frenzied panic. I wish to help others who do not wish to see at the end."
Hades considered it for a moment and then smiled, "You picked the proper name then Akhlys. Personification of the death mist, or the mist covering the eyes of those who have died."
Akhlys looked at him confused, only knowing her namesake was the goddess of poisons and then nodded at the appropriateness. Lys may not get over her fear of not being able to see, but she certainly would help those with their fear of seeing at the end of their life.

House of AngelsLys walked through the cave entrance and then followed the path that Hades had directed her to take. He had mentioned this would be a long trip but she didn’t mind. After working on the surface for a few months now, she felt confident enough to go to the location herself without the presence of Hermes. Hades had called it the House of Angels but Lys had never heard of such a place and so she was unsure what she would find when she got there. The trek through the woods was easy enough and when she was certain she was almost there, she noticed a cemetery off to the side of the path.
Lys was drawn into the cemetery for some reason and began to study the headstones, stopping only when she saw a patch of metal flowers before one. Those flowers only grew in the underworld. Lys knelt down read the stone.
Cel. Lys stood once more and turned back to the trail, wondering why Hades had sent her out here. She continued down the path before coming to a small cottage, surrounded by garden beds and greenhouses of all types. She looked around in awe at the plants growing here.
“Hello?” A voice called and Lys looked forward, blushing slightly.
“Oh. I apologize. I didn’t realize anyone lived here. I am Akhlys. Hades sent me. Is this the House of Angels?” Lys spoke and the viscet smiled.
“Ah yes, he said you would be coming. Come on in and I will make you some tea.” The viscet motioned for Lys to come into the cabin as she dried her hands on a planter’s apron. The viscet pulled the apron off, hanging it by the door as she went to put a kettle on for tea. Lys looked at the viscet confused, who was she? She didn’t seem to be like one of the angels, she was still fully alive.
“Come on dear. Sit down. I am Mae and I am the main grower here at the House of Angels. We grow all the herbs and plants that are needed for many things including the angels of Hades. My mentor was Cel and she handed me down the gardens when she passed away.”
“You knew Cel?” Lys asked shocked. She had only every seen the whispy figure of Cel when Hades summoned her from his earring.
“Yes. She passed away when I was only a child but she had still taught me everything I needed to know. Left me information in these books for me to read when older. And now I am going to teach you.” Mae spoke softly and Lys looked at her.
“Teach me?”
“Yes, Hades thought you may enjoy learning about different poisonous plants and how to grow your own ingredients for your potions. Mostly I think it’s just so you won’t bankrupt him with your purchases!” Mae laughed and Lys found herself smiling. She thought she would like it here.

Lights in the CaveLys walked along the edge of the cave, feeling her fear gripping her as she hated not being able to see. She quickened her pace when she saw the light at the end and ended up running directly into Charon who was waiting by his boat. He caught her from stumbling and looked at her with a slight grin, his hood being knocked off his head by the force of her colliding with him.
“Oh. I am so sorry Charon. I wasn’t paying attention and you know how I hate the dark…” Lys apologized and Charon smiled.
“It’s alright. Why don’t you ask for the light?” Charon looked at her and she seemed confused.
“There are lights in the cave?” Lys had never seen any type of lighting system there and Charon laughed a bit.
“Yes. You just touch the edge of the cave and say ‘Show me the way dear Hermes’ and a path of light will guide you most of the way.” Charon walked to the cave and motioned where Lys could now see a slightly different strip of rock on the wall of the cave.
“Dear Hermes? Why him?” Lys asked and Charon laughed.
“It was put in place before the Hermes you know. He isn’t the real messenger god, just liked the name.” Charon explained and Lys nodded a bit.
“I will still feel funny every time I say it though.” Lys spoke and shook her head, “Dear Hermes…”
“Yes?” A voice called causing both viscets to look back and see Hermes being put down by the massive three headed dog Cerebus, “You called?”
Lys rolled her eyes, “Oh nothing. Charon was just explaining how to get the lights to work in the cave.”
Hermes looked at Charon in amazement, “We have lights in the cave?”

Aid in BattleHades motioned for Charon and Lys to spread out and take back up positions in case he was overwhelmed.
“Do not let it get near the village.” Hades growled, motioning to a small village nearby as he shook on his armor and pulled his scythe from its marking. The scythe grew to its fighting size and then he charged the demon.
Lys began mixing a concoction and watched the battle from the corner of her eye. Once it was ready, she smeared it on a rock that she picked up, careful to only let the potion touch her gloves. She then focused on the fight, waiting for the right chance to use her poison covered projectile.
There! She braced herself to throw and yelled to Hades, “Watch out!” as she threw the stone directly at the demon. Hades jumped out of the way and the rock struck the demon directly in the forehead. It turned his gaze to Lys and snarled angrily, momentarily forgetting Hades.
Lys braced herself, reaching for one of her vials in case the beast charged but then smiled as she saw its eyes clouding up from the potion she had put on the rock. Charon took this chance to throw a glass ball filled with the water from the River Styx, causing the demon to spin on him, but he was already gone. It howled angrily and Hades took this chance to step between Lys and the demon, motioning for her to step back where Charon was now waiting. She obeyed and he charged the monster, striking it in its chest and sending it back to the underworld.
Once it vanished in a cloud of dust, Hades wrapped his arms around the two angels, seeming to be exhausted and smiled, “Good job.”
