“Chi, Cheer up a little! It’s going to be exciting.” Phoenix murmured. His orange tail wagged with excitement, creating a small breeze that Nunchi found less than fantastic. Annoying would be the word she would use to describe it. She lay lazily on the floor of the healer cave, not bothering to give her ‘friend’ any attention. “Besides,” Phoenix continued. Nunchi felt herself cringe as he spoke. “Yacha would hate for you to be a bum!”

“Oh yeah? She told me to stay here. Guard the cave in case some trouble making kids came. She said they might think it would be funny to steal herbal stuff.” Nunchi hissed, leaving an awkward bout of silence to fill up some time. However, as always, Phoenix always had something to say.

“Do you really think kids are gonna take some medicine? They don’t want medicine, they want candy! You know, he stuff that makes their teeth look like elder Oosha.” He chuckled. He wore a wide, dorky grin on his face as he spoke. Others would have a rough time denying the face of Phoenix. Nunchi, however, had no shame. “I don’t even understand this holiday, just allow me to do my job as I am to do. Besides, Yacha will be back soon. She’s just with her friends. Where’s yours at?”

“Mine? Oh, with every other teenager in the entire tribe. Trick or treating, of course, like we should be. I hear the chief has been giving treats to the others, I want one too!”

“Then go get one. You don’t need me.”

“You’re my friend, of course I need you.”

“We’re not friends. I’m not sure why you have that idea, or where you may have gotten the slightest slug of an idea that we might be friends, but we aren’t.”

“Aww, you love me.” Phoenix chirped. “I’ll be back soon, I’m gonna have my handler help me get into costume. I have a great one this year!”

“What are you supposed to be?” Nunchi asked, looking at an overly excited Phoenix strut in his poorly made costume. Still, she found it was a step up from what he normally appeared like.

“A dragon, of course. can’t you see the scales? And these are my horns!” Phoenix chimed, shaking his head wildly. Nunchi backed away from the stick-like objects that protruded from is head. They were poorly sanded deer antlers that he should definitely not be wearing. Fake fangs protruded from his muzzle, although how they stayed on with all of his jabbering was a mystery to Nunchi. She watched as the crazy chyro continued to show off the underplayed that was created to act as a scaled underbelly- curved and pained pieces of log that worked surprisingly well.

“Thank you, I brought you something too!” He mused, hooping out of the cave eagerly. Nunchi narrowed her eyes. What could he possibly be doing right now? she thought bitterly. It would be much nicer had she the opportunity to enjoy the silence. She watched as he trotted with great pride through the willow leaves that hung from the enterance, dropping a small bag of cooked treats of all types. “

“Why?”

“Why what?” Phoenix asked curiously.

“Why did you bring them, go have fun with your handler.”

“Nah, you’re alone! I don’t like it when my friends are alone. I think i’m going to stay here instead.”

“I’m kicking you out.”

“Sorry, you don’t have the authority to do that. Besides, I gave you food. I can stay.”

“Says who?”

“Me, of course.”

Nunchi bared her teeth, trying to scare he pesky brute away. However, despite her best efforts, she failed.


“Besides. You need to eat. You haven’t.”

Nunchi sighed. She hated him, how soft and how basic he was. She hated that he was right, too. “Fine You can stay. Just... stay quiet.”

“I can do that... starting now.” He murmured, laying down a little ways away from her. It may not be the normal celebration that most would think of, but she did enjoy it. This odd human tradition, and a non-sacred one at that! At the end of the day she still found it enjoyable, even if Phoenix was a little bit on the annoying side.

Exploration // OCTOBER // Woods

This was his favorite, when frost began to line the trees and the leaves would scatter across the dirt ground, crunching beneath every paw step he took. The woods were a fantastic place to walk through, especially with Moki, his handler. Phoenix could only ever feel joy when it came to wandering through the maze of trees and bushes, finding new twists and turns with every step. A cognitive map slowly being built as they travelled the paths over and over. They would never go past the border, especially not after what had happened to Nunchi. A brutal wolf attack; the two were not looking for trouble.

“I still don’t like that thing,” Moki murmured, pointing to Phoenix’s fancy trinket he had found on the last expedition. It swung like a pendulum from his neck, swaying back and forth. Moki hates it; claimed that it had bad vibes. Still, Phoenix loved it and refused to take it off.

He hoped he’d find something fun this time around, or at least something that he could chew on. After all, he was bored in camp, especially now that the carnivores would begin to test their luck and lunge at something they feared, hoping for a meal.

“This way, Phoenix!” Moki mused, leading them deeper and deeper into the heavy foliage of the woods. What fun!

Exploration || October || Grasslands

Phoenix trotted through the grasslands, enjoying the winter chill that ran through his bones with every gust of wind. Sometimes rogue twigs snapped under the weight of his paws, blown away from their host during the wind season. Other times he was just pleased to feel the soft crunch of half-frozen grass that hasn’t yet died, that was just barely holding on before the frozen specter took their life for its own. Phoenix grinned; it was a good exploration day; especially with the tribe being busy with their own holiday celebration, Moki didn’t really need the chryso around for now. He didn’t mind, either. Phoenix loved getting the opportunity to run around! The young chryso picked up the pace, his trotting soon turning into a dead sprint as he laughed. How great was this? He was never a wild chryso; he wasn’t sure what it was like to have the feeling of freedom, but he never really wanted it until now. He was unsure of what it was like to be wild; could he be wild? He rarely met wild chryso’s, and so far most haven’t been truly wild, but inhabitants of neighboring tribes. Still, he didn’t need the feeling to be happy; he knew this. He loved Moki, and he couldn’t bear to leave them.

While lost in his thoughts he felt his paws give out underneath, sending him spiraling to the cold, hard ground. “Ouch,” he murmured. “I know it was wrong of me to be thinking of such a thing, but I would never leave Moki or the rest of the tribe. I’m better than that,” He murmured, glancing up to the sky, then focusing on the trees that surrounded the grassland. “I understand your concern, though.” He murmured. The spirits didn’t seem pleased, or he was just clumsy, but Phoenix liked to think that the spirits cared more than the tribe would let on. “Don’t worry,” he began again, his tail beginning to wag behind him. “I won’t be going anywhere! Not anytime soon! That’s a promise I can keep for sure!” He yipped, still sprawled our on the ground beneath him. He found it to be a beneficial exploration, even if he didn’t yet find anything. Hey, a talk with the spirits would always be fun! “I’ll find something for Moki to prove it! Yeah!” He exclaimed. The orange chryso heaved himself back up and began to explore once again.
