Motherly Love:It was with a saddened huff that the filly spun, pale tail lashing against her sides. Sometimes having a twin brother was awesome... Other times, it was absolutely awful.
This was one of those times, the colts in the pasture all ganging up on the sweet filly and spitting horrid statements and names in her direction. She could never return that awful behaviour, it wasn't in her blood. And so she stood, hoping that the jokes would turn and become inclusive... but they didn't. It was her brother who shot the last arrow, the only one in the group who she thought she trusted, the one who she thought would save her. And he blurted out the nastiest comments, spat the harshest insults.
Enough was enough.
Loping to the other side of the pasture, the laughing followed her, trapped inside her ears as she left them. Lowering her muzzle as if to graze, she spotted the gaggle of colts, still looking in her direction and speaking to one another.
But something appeared behind them, a taller, paler figure, one that made her heart soar.
Momma!
With a sharp, swift nip to each colt, the scolding began, and, within moments, the bundle of colts were sheepishly approaching her, heads low and ears lower, muttering apologies before turning, some still smarting from Grace's swift nips.
Last to approach was her brother, mother at his hip.
"I'm sorry..." He muttered, but was told to say it properly. Grace's soft voice was stern, but there was amusement in her eyes. She knew her son would learn from this, but she needed to see it through first.
After a brief apology, the colt returned to his friends, tail clamped down and head still lowered sheepishly.
Zara watched him retreating, making up her mind then and there to be just like her momma when she grew up. Sweet, kind, caring and gentle, she would help those that needed help.
