Why do they look so upset?:
Grenouille, despite no longer being a young child, is still petrified of the dark. He has one small lamp on every night, though he never admits this to anyone. He knows it's embarrassing but he can't help it! The lightbulb went out and all that he sees is pitch black, just him and his pet beetles in complete and utter darkness. He'd get up and turn on the lights, but he's to scared to move from his bed in the dark, fearing he might bump into something, or someone.

Why do they look so upset?:
Sid did something. Something she isn't proud of. Sid didn't tell her friend the truth which made matters worse. The fact that she got in trouble and used her friends name is bad enough as it is, but lying about it made it worse.
Sid got caught sneaking into school past hours, where she goes when she needs to relax, and when the teacher asked for her name she said her closest friends. Sid eventually came to the conclusion to tell her, but it was a bit late. Her parents had gotten a phone call before Sid had a chance to explain. Her friend was the only one that knew about Sid's visits to school and when Sid went to go see her friend, she was rejected and sent back home. She doesn't know how to say sorry.

Why do they look so upset?: poor dude misplaced his notebook!
his notebook contains many things that he deems as important which includes:

reminders! hes super forgetful, so he keeps track of what he has to do later.
doodles! when he gets stressed out/nervous, he does small little doodles to keep his hand busy and to focus on something else rather then the worry of having to socialize.
& finally, his little stories, which he writes when procrastinating.
its because of the previously mentioned forgetfulness that he forgot where he put it. chances are its still in his room, but he hasn't thought to look there yet.
