- "There's still so much to do," Zabella said with a strained huff as she set down another stack of chairs.
She looked around a moment, counting in her head as she figured up how many more stacks she'd have to carry. Lowering her ears, she grimaced visibly, I'll be here all day doing this and it still won't be done. She was setting up for a concert that would be taking place later that evening and the idea of toting chairs all day long was exhausting, to say the least.
"It'd be nice if I had more help. My sister's too busy, plus she'll be here tonight for the concert." Zabella ran her paws through her mane and then down her face. She had to think of something, she couldn't manage this by herself, especially since her promised help had never arrived. Several minutes of silences passed, Zabella still didn't have a solution or even an idea for one. With a heavy sigh, she finished setting out the stack of chairs and went back to grab the next one.
"Everyone I know is busy or AWOL, so I don't have anyone to call right now." An unfortunate truth but a truth nonetheless.
Zabella determined right then that she would just do her best to manage on her own, what other choice did she have. Several treks back and forth and it was becoming more apparent how much more difficult this was than she had originally thought. But she was far too stubborn and she knew too much was weighing on this concert tonight. She couldn't fail. Trekking back, she went to lift another stack of chairs, feeling her strength waning as she willed her body to lift them. The stack shifting and wobbling a bit in her arms as she stubbornly tried to move them. Her arms couldn't hold the weight anymore, her grip slipping. She grit her teeth, panicking as she tried to keep a firm grip on them.
Just as the chairs were about to topple, Zabella felt another pair of hands brush hers and lift the weight from her paws. She blinked in surprise at the other viscet who had come to her rescue.
"Well, looks like it's a good thing we decided to come earlier." The viscet said with a smile. "Zabella, right?" He questioned over his shoulder as he turned to carry to the stack to the grand hall.
"Um, yeah, that's right. And you are?" Zabella questioned as she followed swiftly after, trotting ahead to open the door for him.
"Oakley. It's a pleasure to meet you, Zabella." Oakley added smoothly.
Zabella blushed involuntarily, clearing her head of his velvety voice. "What are you doing here? Er, I mean how did you know I'd need help?"
"Well I didn't actually," Oakley replied honestly. He set the chairs down and began moving them out, "But when we were strolling by, they thought it looked like very few were here to help set up for tonight. So we decided to stop in and see if you were needing some assistance."
"We? They?" Zabella questioned, looking around as she spotted two very properly dressed viscets. She eyed their clothing, they were oddly dressed in comparison to what she was used to. "Ah, uh, hello." She called to them with a wave, not wanting to seem rude.
The two pink viscets giggled to each other, waving back before making their way over there.
"See? I told you, Oakley." One viscet chimed. "Hello, my name is Eloise. We'd heard about this concert that was being put on through the paper. We're quite excited to attend, really." She paused a moment as she surveyed the area. "We thought perhaps you could use some help in setting up and decorating."
Oakley rolled his eyes with a smile. "I'm going to go get some more chairs," He said in dismissal as he walked off.
Zabella glanced back at him, noticing his attire seemed a little too dressy for casual dress. "I'm sorry, were you three going somewhere?"
"Oh no," The other viscet replied quickly. "We were just taking a stroll. It is a nice day out after all." She laughed softly, "Oh, where are my manners, I'm Lucilla."
"You look rather exhausted." Eloise commented, "Perhaps you could show us the decorations and how you'd like them done? We could get to work on that while you rest for a few moments."
"Uh, yeah, sure," Zabella said after a moment's hesitation. She motioned the two to follow her as she led them to the main stage and explained what she was needing. After the full explanation, she showed them to the room with all the materials for the decorations. It was a bit of a mess but she had barely had time to get all the materials the night before, much less get them sorted.
"Well, I do believe we have our work cut out for us," Lucilla said as she looked to Eloise. The two chuckled a little before setting to work on sorting everything so they could begin. "You go on and rest for a few minutes. We'll handle this in no time at all."
Zabella eyed them uncertainly before nodding. She had to trust that these two knew what they were doing, she didn't have the time to argue when there was still yet so much to do. Still, she did take them up on the offer to go relax for a few minutes. Her muscles ached as did her head from all the stressing. After a brief fifteen minute break, she pushed herself up and went to check on Oakley.
As she stepped into the grand hall, her eyes widened a bit with surprise. The progress he had made in the time she had been gone was astounding. It was double, if not triple, what she could have done in the same time. A smile spread across her maw as she felt some relief. 'Perhaps there is hope of getting everything done before tonight.' She stepped in to help Oakley for a bit until her arms couldn't handle it anymore. Oakley insisted she remained in the grand hall and to unstack the chairs as he brought them out. That turned out to be a much faster way of getting the chair set out and far less straining on Zabella. Time passed by quicker than she thought though, she needed to check on the girls and see how the decorations were coming along. Just as she was about to step into the hall to make her way to where they were, she saw them heading her way with baskets filled with decorations. She held the door open for them and followed after them onto the stage. She and Oakley stepped up onto ladders to drape the high decorations around the stage. In what seemed like no time at all, they had finished nearly everything. There was only a handful of things left to do and most of that was things Zabella would have to do herself.
"You guys have been so incredibly helpful, thank you so much," Zabella said with a bow. The three chuckled a little at her gesture but smiled in return.
The last things to set up where the sound equipment, which considering where Zabella worked and her sister, she was very familiar with the setup. Oakley helped do more of the heavy lifting, while the girls did the final touch-ups on any of the decorations and placements. There were several pieces of sound equipment that would need two people to lift and just as Zabella was about to get up to go help with that, she saw Oakley and another viscet carrying it in. She tilted her head, surprised by the sudden extra help. She was thankful for it though as she knew her arms could not have handled another bought of heavy lifting at this point.
The two men brought over the equipment, setting it down. Zabella opened her mouth to thank this new helper but stopped mid-sentence. Her voice catching as she audibly gasped.
"August Maxwell??"
The bright viscet smiled, straightening up to look at her. "Seems everything is about done, I saw this charming fella out there trying to lift this by himself. I figured since I was a bit early I'd help carry it in."
"I greatly appreciate the help, I certainly couldn't have carted that all the way in here by myself," Oakley replied with a chuckle, the two were both laughing as if they were old friends.
Zabella blinked, her mind unable to process all of this. "I wasn't expecting you for another hours or two."
"Oh, I always like to come early to these sorts of events. Usually, there's still some work that needs to be done and I like being able to help out." August replied, twitching his large feathered ears. He was looking over the whole hall, taking it all in. "I've got to say, you all have done a wonderful job on this."
This was too surreal for Zabella. She didn't expect to meet their singer for the concert before the concert time and really didn't expect him to be so down to earth. She was speechless.
"If you don't mind, I'll get these connected for you and help Oakley with the last of the equipment." August stepped past them as he continued with the setup.
Oakley smiled, not minding a moment to rest before more lifting. He looked to Zabella who's gaze was down. Something felt off, he stepped a little closer.
"Is something the matter?" He questioned, concerned.
Zabella shook her head, her gaze remaining fixed on the floor.
"Are you certain?" He pressed, not believing her.
"I just..." Her voice trailed off, she put her hands to her face as her shoulders shook softly. "Why are you all here?" Her voice coming out in a quiet sob.
"To help, that's why--" Oakley began but was cut off.
"Why are you all here? Helping? No one wanted to help with this... why are you all so willing?" Zabella was a bit overwhelmed. Today had been a roller coaster and it'd taken its toll. She was so incredibly thankful for their help but she just couldn't grasp why they were all so willing. Why did three strangers, well dressed like they come from uptown want to help with this? Why did the star of the concert want to help too? She wanted to express her gratitude but all it was coming out as was stifled sobs.
Lucilla and Eloise had noticed something was up and came over quickly. Lucilla blaming Oakley for having done something to upset her. The two squabbling a bit in the background as Eloise stepped close. She put an arm around Zabella as she tried to calm her down. She could hear her repeating the same questions in her soft sobs.
"Why?" Eloise echoed, "Are you honestly asking why?"
Zabella didn't respond.
"Oh, Zabella, the answer is so simple," Eloise replied with a smile. "We wanted to. We wanted to help and get involved with this. To show our support for what you're putting on."
Zabella looked up, teary-eyed still. "What?"
The pop star had stepped back over after he'd finished, seeing the situation. He listened to Eloise a moment before smiling, "You're doing all of this for charity. You put yourself through all of this, determined to see it through so you can help this community." He had been contacted weeks ago about this charity concert to raise money for the local shelter and children's home. He had pushed everything aside when his manager told him about it.
Lucilla and Oakley had stopped fussing and were listening. Both of them nodding in agreement with August.
"We all are here to support this event. To support you as you are the one that made it all possible." Eloise added.
Zabella looked around at them all, tears still streaking through her fur. This wasn't the normal crowd she called her friends but in that moment, she couldn't have asked for better one. With their support and help, they finished everything with plenty of time to spare.
When the time came for the concert, Zabella stood backstage watching the performance. August performed his heart and soul out on the stage as he always did. Happy atmosphere enveloped everyone there and made it quite the memorable night. It wasn't until after the event was over that Zabella got news of how much they had raised in donations. The amount had been phenomenal and far more than Zabella had hoped for. She smiled as she was closing up the concert hall and stood outside in the cool summer night air.
I never could have done it without them.
