We rescue and rehabilitate dogs and cats of all shapes and sizes so they may have the chance to be placed into a caring home. I've only been able to recall this feeling maybe three times in my life but now I think I have a fourth.
My name is Frida and I'm a corgi.
Now I know what you're thinking. Shouldn't a dog have more than one or two favorites? And while that's true let's just say I'm a bit picky. I grew up a traveling dog. I went everywhere my stubby little legs would take me. So it's hard to say I've ever had a favorite place before. And this is all before I met my boy, Joey.
Joey....well...to put it simply the boy needs work.
He's a great kid and I love him to pieces, but he's always getting into trouble and being a jerk. If it were any other life I'm almost positive I would've bit him more than once. But Joey is a sweetheart deep down and well when I saw how life was going for him, I couldn't bring myself to runaway back to the open roads and sky no matter how much I missed it.
My life was with Joey. And Joey's life was way out into a small little town named Gingerton.
And out here there is nothing but trees and wild critters. My kinda place. The town is small and the humans in it are...alright I guess. They carry firesticks out here which makes me nervous but otherwise the town is pretty great.
And me and Joey are even greater. It's a place where we can be legends. And in a way we are. Joey and me made every bit of this place our own, real special like. We carve our names and leave tracks wherever we go and scare tourists.
And it's out in these woods that we make our daily trail. It's nothing special, an old dirt road nobody remembers that leads deep into the forest that surrounds this tiny town. And Joey likes to go there, to the heart of the woods, to feel the evergreens and open sky. And me?
The journey is what makes the experience worthwhile. It's no easy task for anything that's for sure. Climbing craggy outcroppings, past thorny bushes, weaving along ivy trails and past the forgotten clearings no one remembers. It's a bit of a hike truly. But one me and Joey make almost every day at dusk to see the sun leave us for the night. It's our special ritual. Like Taco Tuesday. An amazing time that deserves to be cherished. Preferably with some sour cream on the side.
History:
When I was born, I was in a box with only my brothers and sisters with me.
The sky was grey then and there were tall buildings that I could never see the top of.
Humans walked to and fro but sometimes some would stop to look at us, pet us.
An old man who I liked because he was scruffy would come over and despite looking like he had no food for himself, he fed us.
Whatever he could find.
I learned the ways of the streets and those lessons were harsh. My youngest brother didn't make it to be older than a year and my sisters were taken from me. Only me and my oldest brother were left and we stayed with the scruffy man. It was hard out here, with loud cars and louder humans and my brother and I were only but so big. We stayed away from other dogs, too scared of getting into a fight, we tricked humans one of us distracting them while the other stole into their food.
We lived with the scruffy man until one winter he didn't wake up.
We brought him food we stole, blankets we managed to drag away, but nothing roused him.
My brother left me the next morning saying we shouldn't stick around together anymore, that it would be dangerous.
I cried, begged him to reconsider. I didn't want to be alone, but he told me it was time. I had to be a brave dog now, not a puppy.
Then he left and I watched him go until I couldn't see him anymore when the tears got to making everything too blurry. But I left the city on paw, keeping my head up to the sky as I thought about where I could go. The city was all I knew...but maybe it was time to learn something else.
I traveled then, padding along far and wide, finding dog catchers and mean dogs alike on my way. But I discovered friendship too, in old humans who were saddened by the deaths of their loved ones, in little girls who loved to play rough boy games, in frightened mothers who didn't know the next thing about raising a baby. In dogs who guarded, fought, laughed and played.
Who's only friends were the moon and stars.
I met so many who were so different by the time I turned two. But I always kept traveling, moving on when I deemed they didn't need me anymore, my brother's voice in my head reminding me of how I was no longer a puppy.
It wasn't until I was caught and taken to a strange place filled to the brim with animals and humans that I met Joey.
Joey was a troublemaker, that much I gathered when I saw him try to unlock cages of animals. It didn't work.
It was when he unlocked my cage that I discovered he was a good human. He seemed surprised when he reached for me and I didn't squirm or struggle or even back away from him. Because he was no scarier to me than any other human and he certainly didn't smell like a terrible human. I knew enough from traveling what they were like. No instead he held me close even when he got caught. And the next day I was riding in a much smaller cage with him in the backseat of a car.
