Zverya are most notable for their enourmous physical size and strength. Average measurements in height and weight are dependent on habitat and gender. Zverskiy males are larger and more aggressive than females, averaging 28 to 32 inches in height and weighing up to 250 lbs. Females average 26 to 30 inches in height and can weigh up to 220 lbs. Zverya adapt well to many environments from the desert, as sheepdogs, through the frigid wilderness toward the Kamchatka Peninsula. Adaptations of this breed include broad and thick paws like that of a
bear. This allows the animals to run across ice and on top of snow, as snowshoes do. Small canid ears are planted on the side of a Zverskiy's head, as to insulate the rest of its body and conserve heat. The breed also possesses a thick and heavy year-round coat like that of a
Newfoundland Dog.
However, the dogs are not resistant to compact or hot environments. Apartment living is not suitable for Zverya, as they are not only large dogs, but also because unlike the Caucasian Dog, zverya are territorial and aggressive rather than gentle and silent. It is likely Zverya are part Siberian wolf. Zverya will howl and express dominant and territorial behavior, and especially in limited space can become belligerent. Ultimately, the Soviet dogs are best suited to do military, guarding or hounding work.
