"Pathetic."
Chogan chattered in alarm when the mouse's juvenile form clipped his shoulder as the leader tossed the pup into his den. Chogan's crimson orbs stared balefully out at the large buck, and Chogan's lip curled in satisfaction at the flash of fear within the hateful leader's eyes. Still, the brute was quick to school his face, and his hiss slithered into Chogan's burrow. "Make sure he doesn't die."
Chogan watched on as the leader scurried off. Even from this distance, he could hear the sharp barks of the old buck and the jeering calls of his lackeys as the leader sent yet another child to his deathmatch.
The twisted knot in Chogan's gut only grew tighter as he turned to the pup curled up in the far corner of his cramped den. Chogan didn't know why it surprised him so much to see the pup was the leader's son-- must've been why the child wasn't immediately left to the snakes.
As the leader feared Chogan, so too did this little pup; but, he lacked his father's resolve. The pup cowered as Chogan crept forward to loom over him and inspect his wounds. With no oversight, Chogan's fierce gaze went weary as his scarred ear flicked. That monster... they're just children, and yet he...
Chogan swallowed around a dry throat as he turned away to gather herbs to abate any infection. All the while, Chogan could feel the young, scrawny thing's gaze track him. When he turned around to apply the poultice, the pup seemed all at once too exhausted to expend the energy to be scared of Chogan, no matter the nightmares his father fed him of the aging healer.
As the pup sagged, he seemed to become even smaller, and Chogan found his paws gentle as he soothed the boy's wounds. The pup's ears lay flat against his head, and even Chogan could still hear the echoes of the harsh buck's words. Pathetic. Who was the true pathetic one here?
Chogan scoffed. The only pathetic murid here was the buck outside condemning sons and daughters to their deaths.{350 words- 250+100 annexed on as an extra}
