Introduction Into The Halter
11:56 AM
I let Storm acclimate to his surroundings for a few days. He seemed quite antsy after unloading and I didn't want him to go through too much until he calmed down. I chose a gorgeous light blue halter for him. I walked down to the small paddock he was in and clucked at him. He was a pretty social horse who was comfortable with people, and he had learned that when he came down, he would often receive a carrot or sugar cube. I stroked his neck and rubbed his face. He would still jolt a little when I first touched him, but he quickly relaxed. I let him sniff the halter and he pulled his head back quickly. He spooked and jumped back, but being his curious self, he quickly came back to sniff it. Once, he realized it wouldn't eat him, he lost interest and began grazing, paying me no attention. I walked over and draped the halter over his neck and rubbed his back and shoulder with it. He didn't bat a eye, and I was very proud. I unclipped the latch and tried to lead his muzzle into it. He quickly pulled back, but didn't seem scared. I tried again and this time was successful. While I tried to latch the halter, he tried pulling away, and I had to run to keep up with him. I finally was able to clip it, and he froze, as if wondering what would happen to him if he moved. He swung his head and I couldn't help but laugh. I let him walk around with it for a few minutes, before I tried introducing the lead rope. I easily clipped it onto the halter, and I stood by his shoulder. I gave a small tug and took a step forwards. He planted his feet and refused to take a step forward. I gave continuous small tugs and when he finally took one step forward, I released all pressure. I would wait one moment and then ask again. In no time, he was willingly following me, to the point where when I stopped he kept moving. I would walk and stop, and give a soft yank on the lead rope. He would try to barge through me so I swung the end of the lead rope in front of him. He reared back and did a small crow hop. I wanted him to know that if he tried to blow past me, he would have to also go through a swinging lead rope. It took him a few times to learn, but he realized that if he stayed by my shoulder and stopped when I stopped her wouldn't face the swinging lead rope. I eventually unhooked the halter and he sprang off. I was very excited at his progress.
