their object & connection to it ; The sound of dripping water clashing onto the floor echoed throughout the cave. Sounds from creatures lingered in the cave, growing louder with ever step. Every minute the temperature dropped drastically in the dark cave. Pine was so far into the cave that no sunlight could reach him. ba bump ba bump Suspense grew as he trailed further into the cave.
"Where is it?" he asked himself frenetically.
"Where is what?" the mysterious voice asked.
Pine turned around, making eye contact with the creature that hissed behind him. A snake, with a gaze so powerful to send chills down your spine, long enough to wrap around your whole body three times.
The snake snickered, "You where looking for me? Oh now that's something..."
"I want to offer you something worth your time. My soul, i'd like to keep it somewhere safe so i can live forever."
"How interesting... Consider my interest peaked! But why me, why not just silly ol' necklace or some other silly object?" the snake hissed.
"You are the worst of your kind, an object can break or be lost way to easily. No one would dare try to kill you with that venom you carry, enough to kill a whole species of bird."
"So you've done your research, honored! I'd be honored to have our soul... Deal?"
"Deal"
And at that moment, the snake took Pine's soul. The rich scarlet colored snake became the protector of his soul. Its been over 100 years from the time. Pine is still alive, as well as the snake. The only change that has happened since then is their bond. Pine has named the snake Pepper and they've shared quite a few good times together.

I'm sorry I couldn't describe the item too much in the story itself; if this is not allowed, please ignore.
I was inspired by a number of little seashell turtles my parents had brought back from various business trips or such to tropical areas. I remember my anguish when a few of them broke easily, and were so difficult to put back together, and I'm now left with one (lucky) intact turtle which I recently uncovered from a shelf full of memories.
as I fortunately live in a state on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, the ocean is never much more than an hour's drive away, though it is quite different than certain tropical areas. I'm not much of a beach person, though I do love the clear turquoise water and white sand. nothing does better than these turtles than reminding me of such a beautiful scene.

where was it?
his heart pounded. the sound was everywhere. filling his chest, filling his ears, filling his world.
thump, thump.
thump, thump.
it was a roar in his ears, iron claws gripping his chest, a heavy weight closing his throat. darkness swirled around him, threatening to swallow him whole.
the sound seemed to stop just as his paw met a smooth surface. it was cool as the seawater beside the little shop down by the shore.
feeling like he was able to breathe again, he curled his wide paw around the small, fragile object.
it was the thing. the thing. he knew it without being able to see it.
the near pitch black of the night was no longer eerie. he sank back on his hindquarters, letting out a relieved sigh. he hadn't even realized that he'd been holding his breath for so long.
everything was okay now.
- - - - -
what was so peculiar about this nighttime adventure was his fear.
he was scared of the dark.
scared was an understatement - the truth was, he was often paralyzed by it.
but he was deeply interested in astronomy - specifically the stars and heavenly bodies. though it was pitch black, there could not have been a better night to study the stars. he could find quiet. he could find peace. but better, he could find the stars.
the conditions were perfect - clear sky, new moon.
the only thing that kept him from giving up on his dreams was his little turtle.
as long as he kept it with him, he was safe.
- - - - -
he'd traveled for a while before the sky was entirely dark. he settled down in an open, flat field with soft, springy grass.
he watched the last streaks of light disappear from the horizon. a few silver specks began to gleam in the sky.
as all light disappeared, fear began to set in. clumsily he opened the little pouch which he'd placed the little turtle in and reached in, expecting to touch the smooth shells.
instead he was met with the supple fabric of the pouch.
as he twisted his paw, trying to reach all corners of the bag, something cool slipped past his paw. there was the unmistakable thud, quieter than a whisper.
but he heard it.
panic instantly set in.
- - - - -
the little turtle had been from a small shop by the sea shore.
as a young kalon he'd longed to live by the shore.
the souvenir had helped him keep in mind the whispering of the lapping waves and the pale blue sky.
his family had been too poor to buy any souvenirs.
"sorry, bud, but no souvenirs," his mother murmured.
the shopkeeper noticed the little kalon staring longingly at a little turtle made of sea shells for about ten minutes already. the turtle interested him in two ways - one, he loved turtles, and two, he loved the sea. the little kalon's wide, luminous eyes welled with tears as he reluctantly turned and followed his parents and siblings, tail dragging on the ground.
the shopkeeper was quite attached to the little turtle. he'd made it simply for fun, and it wasn't exactly for sale. but he was a wise and kindhearted kalon, and he could tell this little kit wanted it more than anything in the world.
without hesitation, he swiped it off the countertop and slipped it to the little blue kalon as he padded sadly by.
he watched the kit's eyes widen in mixed awe and excitement. the shopkeeper smiled warmly and nodded in the direction of his parents, who were waiting outside.
nothing had ever felt better than the grateful hug the little kit gave him before bouncing off, sadness forgotten.
- - - - -
as he scooped up the little turtle in his wide paw, he pressed it tightly to his chest - still taking care not to press too hard and break it.
it was all that mattered.
he sat there in total silence, in total darkness, caring only about the tiny masterpiece cupped his his paws. caring only about the miniature treasure he held to his chest, to his big heart.
it was only until his heart rate had slowed to normal that he glanced up, up, up towards the sky - making sure to hold on tightly to the turtle.
the sight took his breath away.
a million stars, or more, were scattered across the velvet sky. amid the pitch black he could even catch hints of purple and blue.
it was just the right time of year where he could point out certain planets.
venus.
mars.
even jupiter.
he couldn't help searching for some constellations as well.
some of the year-round constellations - ursa major, ursa minor, hercules, aquila, cepheus, lyra, corona borealis, canis major, canis minor. the big dipper with the bright north star at the end.
what was more wonderful was spotting some spring constellations. leo, leo minor, virgo, sextans, to name a few.
it was not long before streaks of color began to lighten the sky.
he was not a stranger to sunrises.
still, it stunned him how beautiful it was.
- - - - -
as the sun peeked over the horizon, he rose to his paws, stretching, feeling as refreshed as after a good night's sleep.
he tucked the little turtle securely into his pouch.
maybe I should do this more often.
