kalon name: Esmerelda (or Ezzy)
favorite color and why:
The Kalon eyes you with an inquisitive gaze, drumming her toes against the rock she’s resting on, as if she’s debating whether or not you’re even worth her time. Seconds tick by. Perhaps minutes. You grow uneasy. Something about the intensity of her pelt adds all the more to the mood. Her eyes never leave you, for a long time. You want to move away, glance away, truly, but something about that gaze is hyponotic. It’s rendered you motionless. You swallow. Perhaps that was the wrong question to ask.
You’re wondering if you’re going to survive this encounter when she breaks into a slow grin, practically purring as she slinks gracefully off the rock, pelt shimmering like a star in the sunlight as the beams reflect off of the neon colors. “You want to know...my favorite color?” Her voice tits up, eyebrows raising up at the end of her question. She circles around you, dragging her tail underneath your chin and flicking your check with the end of it as she passes.
She’s truly a mesmerizing piece of beauty. You nod weakly.
“I’m sure you expect it to be some, some...gaudy assortment of the rainbow. Ha! As if.” The way she draws out the ends of her words, pauses notably at the end of her sentences, creates an atmosphere that’s leaving you desperate for every next phrase. Like you’re reading a story that’s so good, you can barely read fast enough to devour it. “There’s pinks, and blues, and greens, and violets, and yellows, and...all kinds of...flashy things out there. Why would I have any need for that? No. I don’t need those colors. My favorite...or favorites, I should say, are quite simple.”
“Black, and white.”
Seeing the confusion in your face, she pulls herself up onto the rock once more and stretches out her body. She revels in your lack of understanding. “It’s quite simple, really. What’s the fundamental similarity that the two colors have?” You blank, shrugging uselessly.
“Both white and black are more than one color. They are all, and they are nothing. Black- the sum of all colors. Not a dangerous void, no, but the amazing mixture of every color that there’s ever been, so vast and extraordinary, that nothing can penetrate deep enough to leave its mark. And then there’s white.” She sighs dreamily, rolling onto her side. “The absence of all color. A blank slate, a pure image. So brilliant that no color could dare mark against it. A beacon, a model, intimidating in its simplicity.”
“I am both black and white. I am all colors, an enigma of combinations, shimmering and daunting. I am also the absence of color. I may not have any intricate designs, but I am power, and I am grace in my simplicity.” She grins wider, waving you off with a paw.
“Move along now. I feel that my words of wisdom have been wasted on you. Try to keep me in mind the next time you go to make assumptions.”
