A young Adelaide walked down the sidewalk, his strut lively. His parents waiting for him at home as he tired to get home, though he was in no rush. The air was cold, he had lived in Juneau, Alaska at the time. He hummed on his way home that day, he had been happy to finally be on his way home after a long day, he winced lightly when a breeze had picked up and it got colder. " Winter is around the corner. " he had hummed to himself, noticing the snowfall on the ground, a sigh had left the young boys mouth when he noticed it started snowing.
He got home twenty minutes to get home, which he was happy to finally be home. He had called out to his parents to alert them he was home, he was curious when he had no response. He walked around the entire house finding nothing. He noticed he had texts from his mother saying they had to leave the house and that it was an emergency and they couldn't take him with them. He continued to read see that his dad had texted about a bell for him that they wanted him to have to remember them. He didn't want to believe them, so he called both of them, multiple times only for neither to answer.
He hated the little bell at first, he saw it as a symbol of his parents abandoning him and that they didn't love him anymore. Years had passed and he still refused to look at the bell. He had sat in his hated house, watching the news, before he noticed something he wished he never saw.
" Couple found dead " he knew it was his parents, his mother had a heart condition and most likely had a stroke. His father had beat Cancer a year before he left, it could have come back easily the doctors had said they did what they could, so it never really disappeared. Adelaide remembers feeling nothing, then all of a sudden grief and sorrow had washed over him, though it was a few days later.
He began looking for the bell he had hid away from himself, often breaking down when he couldn't find it. He checked everywhere he could think of, he went in the attic, a place that as a small child his father would to him there was monsters up there. Adelaide chuckled at the memory knowing it was to keep him out, his chuckle didn't last long as he continued looking.
He looked behind the fridge, he used to jump out to scare his mother, though it never worked, he wasn't good at hiding. He sighed when he saw nothing behind the fridge. He looked through boxes that were on top of the fridge, finding other things his parents owned. Pictures, bracelets, old gloves, and pens. " If I can't find the bell, I do have these... " he sighed sadly.
A month later, he decided to check his parents room, a room he hadn't been in for a few years. That's when he noticed, a small shiny silver bell. He remembers breaking down blaming himself for never looking in this room. He wanted to see his parents, he wanted them to be proud of him for getting so far in life even though he has been scarred. He pushed through it all to make sure he could keep the house his parents had loved so much. He noticed the bell was on a ribbon that could be tied around his neck. He grabbed it and tied it around his neck.
Now, in the present, he still struggles to forgive his parents for leaving him and he still feels sorrow about them passing. Though this has happened, he works hard and is still living in his old home, he never leaves without his bell. He's happy with the way he was able to keep his life going, though he now has some mental issues due to what has happened. He knows his parents are proud of how far he's gotten, he loves them and wishes he could tell them one last time that he really did love them, always.
