Sharai sighed as she wiped down the last of the countertops. It was already 4:30 am, and almost time for the club to close down. She was unbelievably tired, and kept thinking about her delicious frozen dinner waiting for her at home. She just stared at the clock with a glazed look in her eyes, until she heard a polite cough behind her.

"Excuse me, bartender?" a soft, sultry voice cooed at her. "May I get one of these?" she asked, pointing at a deep red drink on the menu. "It looks absolutely lovely... what is it called?"

Sharai broke her trance. "Ah, that's a good one. Club special!" she said, cracking a tiny smile.
"It doesn't have an official name just yet, but my boss keeps calling it 'The Garnet Goddess'."

"Oooh... how lovely," the pretty, pink kalon purred. "I absolutely adore the color. Garnets are my first love..."
As she flipped her hair to one side, Sharai, now fully awake, finally noticed the sparkly red gems braided into her lovely locks.

"Wow, you have so many!" she mused. "Are those real?"

"Real as the drink you're holding!" the kalon beamed at her, happy to get someone to notice. She took the glass.

As she turned her back to serve the next customer, she heard a little chuckle as the pink kalon chatted with a larger surly gentleman, and eventually walked off with him. Sharai thought it seemed a bit odd, but it wasn't any of her business so she kept on her day. Not long after she had left, a strange hooded kalon puffed as he practically threw himself into the counter. "Excuse me! Excuse me, missy!" he gasped, suddenly bringing his voice lower. "Have you seen a certain...lady around? Redhead? Garnets in her hair?"

Knowing this situation all too well after working in the club, Sharai splashed what was left in the glass she was making into his face.
"Get lost pal, I know your type. You'd better leave her alone. It's real scummy of you. I'm not helping you creep on anyone."

He sputtered, rubbing his face with his paws. "W-wait! It's... not what you think. I have a legitimate reason!"

Sharai scoffed. "Oh, yeah. Suuure you do...", rolling her eyes. "Why should I listen to you, creep?"

"Listen up... I bet you've seen her type before. Stunning. Absolutely drop-dead gorgeous...but I'll tell you somethin' you don't see about her. See, I got it all figured out--she's a no-good, filthy crook!!"

She just laughed at him. What an absolute joke... and a poor cover up. "Listen, I'm sorry, but if you don't leave I'm gonna have to--"

"Now, now, wait, before ya do anything risky... I know what you're thinkin'... I must be full of it! But hear me out, I know what I'm doin' here. See, here I have deduced where she got the goods from. She's been pulling the wool over our eyes for years, but I know what's up! And soon, so will you..."

"What goods...? What are you talking about?"

"Her garnets! They're not actually hers... at least, not originally! And I got the dirt on her this time!" He glanced around the room, looking a bit nervous to be heard. "You seen her, I know you have... it's too late now. I've already told you, they're gonna be looking for ya now. I'm gonna let ya in on what I know..."

"First of all, her story doesn't add up. Where she came from? I've heard Amsterdam, I've heard Paris, I've even heard Jamaica thrown around here and there. Are you buyin' that? I don't think so. One person can't have grown up in three completely different countries. That just isn't how things go, see? ...Alright, alright.. what about her family? She claims to have gotten all her riches from her family, particularly her father's side. Claims to be related to a duke of sorts... that's also pretty fishy. Would someone related to a duke act the way she does? Unladylike, trashing the place, partying every night? I don't think that'd fly over in the royal castle, dontcha think? You see, I'd think at the very least she'd act like she came from royalty. The people she hangs out with definitely ain't royal, they ain't even close! She has a faint Italian accent ... she may be with the mob, that might be where she gets her money from, but as for her jewels? Ohoho, that's a whole other story, my friend.... here, come meet me in the back where it's more, private. We got ears everywhere, see... and this info's real hush-hush...

So... you wanna know the truth? You're serious, here?

(The mysterious kalon looks around him, and lowers his voice a few decibels.)

I hear she's in with the mob... yes, that's no joke. I'm afraid she's been seen out with some ,er, less then respectable individuals. See? (he gestures back to the club.) Peoples in there, some of em, I know they got ties. Won't say who. Too risky.

"But I will let ya know where she got 'em from, they ain't fakes! I've traced the locations exactly. I was talkin with this lady, Misses A, can't tell ya her full name, sorry -- she had her great grandmother's garnet necklace taken right under her nose when she was asleep. But she wasn't as sneaky as she thought she was! She left behind some really obvious clues... we found clumps of red fur at the scene. On top of that, all of her red wine was taken, too. Just the red wine. Really odd choice, but I won't judge.

"But then, how she got those jewels out of the necklace? Easy one. A friend of mine, a jeweler, said he had a confident young lady stroll in. At least tried to... she dented up his doorframe with her horns. Anyways, says she needed help getting her great-grandmother's necklace fixed up... and by fixed up, she said the metal casings were tarnished and that she needed to switch them to a newer body. He said it seemed fine to him, but who could turn down a commission, especially these days? Jewelry's a dying art,
he says. So he takes out the jewels for her and she seems to be overjoyed at this. Before he even gets a chance to ask if she wants him to reset them, she's already out the door with a stack of cash thrust into his paws.

"Next she's seen getting her hair did up at my sister's salon down the street. Suffice to say, her jaw nearly dropped on the floor when she presented a bag full of priceless gems to one of the gals behind the counter asking her to braid them in. Of course, the ladies were a bit suspicious of this but who could deny an offer of a few mega-glamorous rocks as payment? Well, besides a tough guy like myself." he chuckled a bit.

He chuffed a bit as he looked down at his watch, and apparently suddenly realizing the time, he rushed out towards his car without another word to Sharai.

"What the-- hey! you didn't finish telling me where--"
Sharai stood there in shock as the heavyset gentleman, oddly, disappeared over a fence before her very eyes. He was more limber than I gave him credit for, she thought to herself, and turned back into the club. Who the heck was that guy?? And what does he expect me to do with that information?

Sharai, lost in thought, wasn't paying attention to where she was walking and crashed right into someone spilling their food everywhere!

"Gosh, I'm so sorry, I didn't mea--"

She found herself looking right into the face of the woman in question. Sharai lost her breath taking in both her beauty and the knowledge she had just received of her. Her necklace glittered under the lights. She wondered if that one had been stolen too...

Image

"Wh--oh, heey!" Sharai found herself sweating a bit.

The kalon giggled and batted her eyes at her. She doesn't seem to be too bad... what was she even worried about?
Sharai beckoned for her to follow her back to the bar to get her a new drink. Just as she turned to leave, she heard a sudden shatter and three gunshots. Kalons all around started to panic and rush out the doors. She turned around, shocked, only to see the pink kalon being half-strangled by a large, tough-looking kalon. He grunted and ushered his lackeys in, and whispered something in one of their ears. They suddenly locked their eyes with Sharai and she knew instantly they wanted her. She ducked down behind the bar and whipped out the emergency phone, only to find someone had cut the line. It was a bad day to have left the phone charger at home... ugh. Two dark shadows loomed over the counter and she tried to cower behind stacks of coffee beans. All of a sudden, the mob boss called them back for a more pressing matter... she heard the voice of that mysterious kalon screaming at the top of his lungs trying to create a distraction. "Run! Get outta here!"

As Sharai ran to run out the door, she noticed the pink kalon completely motionless on the spot, obviously frozen of fear.

"Hey, you need help? Come with me, he's distracted..."

Dazed, the kalon blinked twice and came back to the room. "H-huh?"

"C'mon, we gotta go!" Sharai grabbed her paw and tugged her outside towards the car.

"Get in!" the mystery kalon puffed, "Hey, what're ya doin' with her?!"

"Just let us in!" Sharai barked. "She's in some kind of shock, I think she needs help!"

He looked at her for a moment, nodded, and they were headed straight for the hospital.

---

Sharai waited anxiously with her new friend in the waiting room, wondering if she should go up to see that kalon lady or wait until a doctor escorted her down. As if he had read her mind, the doctor popped his head in and told them they were wanted upstairs.

In the hospital room, the kalon was sitting up expectantly as if she had been a therapist expecting an appointment rather than a pained hospital patient. Besides a few bruises and a small cut, she seemed to be fine, although it was hard to tell with her deep maroon fur. Seeing her in a somewhat-vulnerable state, and unafraid of confronting her in a more private setting, she asked her some questions about her garnets, to see if this guy's story had any weight. After a while, she caved and finally admitted she was involved with the mob.

"Oh, really?" Sharai chuffed sarcastically. "Never woulda guessed, lady..."

"Hey, shush you," the kalon remarked. "And my name is Deidre, not 'lady'. I am a lady, but I do have a name!"
She brushed her paw over her garnet necklace. "They made me steal these for the orientation... that's where I got this necklace."

Turning to the mysterious kalon, she apologized to him and said: "Please, please take these garnets back to the woman I took them from.. they're gorgeous, but I can't live with the guilt anymore. You have a good enough heart to not take them for yourself, I hope?"

"Ah, thank ya much ma'am! I'll be sure to get these to the right owner..." he quickly turned to leave.

"Wait--," Sharai said, but he was already out the door and halfway down the steps. "Oh... oh well."

How does he move so fast??

"Well," Deidre sighed, "Nothing else to do. Seinfeld's on, I guess... wanna give me some company?"

Zero.

I put on my lab coat and sat down at my computer, ready for another daunting day of work. The alchemy lab was bustling with activity; our interns were rushing to get news on the latest discovery. Just yesterday evening, my student, Aruba, discovered that garnet gems could be used to produce solar energy for an indeterminate amount of time. This scientific breakthrough was terrific; if we could understand the mechanics of how the garnet gems harvested energy for so long, then we could patent the idea and not only create a renewable energy source, but we also could earn the largest grant that the government had to offer. This would be the biggest advancement in scientific history for our generation, and our company would easily become the richest lab within a thousand mile radius. There was only one issue; we were in severe debt. We simply did not have the funds to start a new research experiment when we were still focusing on current projects. Our competitors would hear word of our discovery any day now, and they would likely take the claim for themselves.

Naturally, the adventurous and peppy Aruba was already thinking of ways to collect more gems to use. She was in over her head again. I hated to bring down her spirits, but our laboratory simply did not have the funds to continue her research at this time. I looked over to her at the next bench; she was beaming with excitement. It broke my heart to tell her the news. “Aruba, we don’t have the funds to invest in anymore garnet gems at this time.”

Her expression quickly turned to a frown. “We have to find a way!” she insisted. “I know we can.” The rose-colored student’s passion was incredible, but she was so young and so naive... I simply shook my head. There was no way that our lab was going to receive another grant of such a preposterous amount when we already had outstanding debt. As quickly as the smile had left her face, it returned. “Dr. Hela, I want to do this for you. I am loyal to my work above all else. My heart lies in the work that I have accomplished, and I will not let you give up. I will ensure that my research continues.” I gave her a halfhearted smile.

"Aruba, if you can figure out a way to do this, then be my guest."

One.

I arrived at work as usual for a Tuesday morning. To my surprise, Aruba was not at her bench; I headed down to the microscopy room to see if she was analyzing a specimen. I found two interns analyzing iron levels in a sample of water, but Aruba was not there. “Have either of you seen Aruba this morning?” The interns shook their heads without looking up from their work. I returned to the main examination room and noticed that her dazzling red lab coat was still hanging up in its usual position. Aruba hadn’t come into the lab today. I sent her a text to ask why she hadn’t previously called off.

“Hey Aruba, are you coming into work today?”

“Hi Dr. Hela! I’m incredibly sorry, but I’ve come down with something awful. I won’t be in today.”

“Alright, thank you for letting me know. In the future, please let me know that you’re calling off at least two hours in advance so that I can reassign your work.”

“Alright, understood. I apologize. Have a nice day!”

After work, I gathered my belongings and prepared for my commute through the city. The cold air nipped at my face no matter what direction I held my head, so I looked down at my paws as I walked. I approached an intersection and looked up to see a rose-colored Kalon leaving a pawn shop. Aruba?

Two.

I decided to follow the Kalon, and indeed it was my student! What was she doing out here if she was sick? Aruba slipped around a corner, and I followed. A rush of Kalons crossed the street in front of me, and I lost sight of my student. When the commotion cleared, Aruba was nowhere to be found.

I decided to head home, my head swarming with curiosity at why Aruba had been out and about in the city. Suddenly, a shout broke me out of my trance. "Move!" The shop window behind me shattered and a puff of red gas emanated from the new hole in the wall. I was nearly hit in the head from flying glass shards; the sign above me indicated that the window belonged to a jewelry shop. Customers fled the store in a panic. I hurriedly bolted into the store and located the shocked owner standing in the middle. The disaster inside made the shattered window appear a joke; glass was littered everywhere and the display cases were in shambles. Red powder coated everything like a fine dust. The shop owner sat in the middle of the store, tears streaming from his eyes.

I helped the owner up and asked if he was alright. He nodded and he began to take in the scene that lie in front of him. To our surprise, nothing seemed to be missing from the display cases. He looked over his index and matched every product up to its expected location. I was just as confused as he was. Nonetheless, he filed a police report and I stayed with him until the cops arrived. We exchanged phone numbers, as I was now considered a witness. He thanked me for my time, and I solemnly continued my walk home. As I neared my house, thoughts swirled in my mind. Nothing made sense to me; why was nothing stolen from the jewelry shop? Why did I see Aruba in the city when she hadn't come into work? My mind continued to wonder to no avail. Eventually, I fell into a halfhearted sleep.

Three.

I arrived to work early the next day, and Aruba's lab coat was missing. As I began to assume the worst, she entered the work area from the hallway and sat down to examine a metallic compound. "Hey, Dr. Hela. Again, I'm really sorry about yesterday," she mumbled into her microscope. She acted as if nothing strange had happened the day before. I eyed the Kalon up and down, even more puzzled than before.

"No worries," I reassured her. After all, Aruba was my most dedicated student; her loyalty to the company was a trait that every employee and intern aimed for, but could never quite achieve the way she did. Her colleagues could tell how much this job meant to her; alchemy was her passion, and she was incredibly intelligent. Although she clearly lied to me yesterday, I could not argue that having Aruba around was beneficial to everyone. I continued my work as usual. At the end of the work day, we all exchanged goodbyes and went our own ways.

I entered my house and immediately changed out of my uncomfortable professional attire. No sooner than I reached my couch did I receive a phone call from an unrecognized number. Another telemarketer? I internally groaned and answered the phone. "Dr. Hela?" the voice asked.

"Speaking," I replied. I recognized the voice almost immediately; it was the shop owner from yesterday.

"I have more details about what happened yesterday. Please come meet with me at the Starbucks across the street form my shop. Immediately," he added. I felt a lump form in my throat and my stomach began to churn. I hoped that it was a new lead, but his voice was the least bit reassuring. I hurried out the door, nearly forgetting to lock it in the process.

Four.

I entered the local chain coffee shop and I recognized the shop owner immediately. He gestured me towards his table where two cups of coffee were placed. I absolutely despised the taste of coffee, but I complied. He showed me a police report that had been filed yesterday, just fifteen minutes after his shop windows had shattered. It was from the local pawn shop. It appeared that the thief had an agenda; all of the jewelry was stolen from the pawn shop. "I'm not sure what to make of this," he said. "Perhaps they were going to steal from me but decided to go for an easier target?" I nodded my head in agreement, although the situation didn't make sense. Why would someone steal from a pawn shop when they could have easily robbed a jewelry store? Economically, the thief was not wise in the slightest.

I thanked the shop owner for sharing the information with me. "I will continue to assist you in finding the thief," I reassured him. Realistically, we had no lead and we wouldn't hear back from forensics for weeks. I knew that a small shop owner's case would be pushed to the back of the police department's files and would accumulate dust. Regardless, I tried to keep his spirits high. We parted ways and I headed home to enjoy the sliver of evening that I had left.

Five.

Work was as meticulous and tiring as usual. All of the alchemists were stationed at their work benches, either analyzing specimens or reviewing their notebooks. Someone poked me on the shoulder; I turned to face the glasses and stocky build of one of the interns. His colleague stood next to him, looking a bit nervous. "Professor, we've run out of Coomassie stain and can't seem to find anymore," he frowned. I nearly chuckled.

"Of course you can't find anymore. It's heat-sensitive, so I keep it in the rear of the supply closet in an airtight chamber," I explained. "I'll come with you to get some more." I grabbed my keys and headed down the hallway, the two interns following me. We entered the supply closet, which was more like a supply room with a glorified door, and I directed the interns to the back. I gestured towards the chamber and they both acknowledged its location. I turned off the vacuum and inserted my key into the lock. When I opened the chamber, garnet gems poured onto the floor from all angles. The three of us gasped simultaneously. What in the world are these doing here?

"What's all the commotion?" an employee called out as more staff members rushed into the room. Anyone who entered shared the same facial expression of bewilderment. I was at a loss for words.

"You can all go home early today," I stammered. I did not look up as I heard pawsteps shuffling back into the main lab room. My head ran wild with confusion. I was the only one who had a copy of the key to the airtight chamber, and now that there were gems mixed in with several different types of chemicals, my lab easily owed the government another ten thousand dollars. I was the only one with a key, right? No, I was wrong. There was one student whose passion and enthrallment had convinced me to give them a key to the chamber as well for the days that I wasn't available. I had made a copy of the key for Aruba.

It was as if everything had made sense right then and there. Aruba was missing from work the same day that the jewelry shop's windows exploded and the pawn shop was robbed. Only an alchemist would know how to collapse windows with a nontoxic powdery gas. An alchemist who had a loyalty to her job and wanted nothing but to continue research on her garnet gems. An alchemist who was at their wit's end, unable to come up with the funds to purchase gems on her own.

I still couldn't understand why Aruba would cause a commotion at the jewelry store, only to rob a pawn shop. She likely would have been able to pull off her scheme without involving the jewelry store at all, and she would have gotten gemstones with a guaranteed purity rating. Why the pawn shop was her target still made no sense to me. Suddenly, another wave of realization had hit me. Aruba was by no means an unintelligent Kalon; in fact, she was one of the most achieved scientists that I knew. I placed myself in her shoes and it became clear to me that the jewelry shop affair was nothing but a decoy; Aruba had used the extra time to successfully rob the pawn shop! The police were too busy assessing the damage at the jewelry store to pay any attention to the pawn shop. Perhaps being my student was her greatest flaw; Aruba and I thought too similarly.

I called the police and arranged to have Aruba arrested the following day. I called the shop owner that evening and he agreed to ride the bus into work with me the following morning.

End.

The shop owner and I exited the bus at our stop and walked a few blocks until we arrived at my lab. An incognito police vehicle sat in the lot next to the doors. We slipped into the car and waited with two officers until the suspect arrived. Aruba's striking red hair was visible from a distance. My heart sunk as I saw the cheery and enthusiastic student heading towards the door. As her paw reached for the handle, both police officers ran after her. I covered my eyes as an immense wave of shame and guilt crashed over me. My own student wanted nothing more than to develop an advancement for the scientific community, and here she was, being arrested at my own accord. I bit my lip as I heard the click of handcuffs. Everything felt like a dream.

The shop owner and I stepped out of the vehicle. As Aruba turned to face me, her expression went somber and everything seemed to make sense at that moment. She averted my gaze and looked at the ground. She didn't bother denying any of the allegations that the officers raised. She used the brute strength of her muzzle to break the necklace that she had been wearing under her attire; an exquisite gold piece fell to the ground with a large gem encrusted in the middle. The shop owner recognized it immediately and grabbed the piece, his eyes welling with tears of joy. "It was something extra," she scoffed. She shook out her hair and gems fell to the ground. She must have given up at this point, unable to hide her association with garnet gems. We stared at the thief in shared bewilderment.

Aruba turned to me and grimaced. “Dr. Hela, I was nothing but loyal to you and this company. We could have returned our debts ten-fold with the money that we would have made.” I watched with a broken expression as the officers locked her paws with handcuffs. An immerse wave of guilt washed over me as I watched my student step into the police vehicle, never to return to my lab.

Perhaps Aruba was loyal to what she loved most - her passion for alchemy - but a filthy crook meant nothing to me.

I watch as a few certain kalons start going up to people.
Bragging again? How annoying..
You aren't the king of the world just because you have jewelry.
All I can hear them say is..
"Oh look at me! I'm sooo pretty with all my riches!"
It's so annoying!
I'm not having any more of it!

And so, naturally, I'll do something about it.
I'll steal their riches starting tonight. Try bragging after that you fools!

Okay.. I think I'm at one of their houses? I'm not sure, but either way, I'm doing it. One less person who can brag about their "beautiful riches".
I open the door and walk in, this is certainly one of their houses, it's covered in jewels! Actually, this place is really pretty.. No.. I can't be distracted! I gotta go and steal those jewels!
I found out where their room was quicker than I expected. I figured that they would hide their stuff in there, turns out I was right!
In the room there was a small chest filled with expensive jewelry, not that that's surprising.
One caught my eye in particular, a collar with a heart shaped jewel in the middle. I think it was a garnet encrusted in it, and it just so happens that garnets seem to look really good on me..
No! Focus Seisha! Grab them and go!
So, I grabbed the tiny chest and ran for my life, I couldn't risk being caught, after all, I think I've already dedicated myself to this.
Once I got to my house, I figured I might as well see what was in there.
I took out the collar first thing, it was so pretty! I couldn't help but put it on. But, who wouldn't?
I dug out more, the other jewels didn't matter to me, I only wanted garnets.
I found twelve smaller ones, maybe they would go good in my hair?
I put my hair up and put the smaller jewels in, it actually looks better than I expected!
As I look at the remaining riches, the non-garnets, I decided to sell them to buy more garnet jewelry.
And what happens when I run out of money to buy garnets with? I''ll steal more riches to sell!

I must admit, I got addicted to stealing things.
After I was done with those annoying braggers, I went on to steal more. I couldn't help it by now!
And maybe I'm worse than them by this point.
But, I don't care. I've already committed to this.
And I've walked too far down this path to walk back.

I have tried many times in recent to become active again, but it has been difficult to find that imaginative and childish spark I once had visiting this site. i wish everyone well and hope that you find fruitfulness on and off of CS <3 thank you for the wonderful 11 years, ciao!
