iv. prompt: to question where aeneas most prefers, you must first know upon which you stand. to the free eye the answer is as simple as can be - sand, you stand upon sand. this reigns true in only the most technical of terms. where you stand is upon sacred ground watered with tears of blood. an arena. a stage. the platform that connects god to mortal in equal footing beneath the merciless roarings of a crowd gathered solely for the unavoidable bloodshed. ruthless is the game played upon the sands where the only rule is one may survive, and the risk coming from it is what fuels aeneas.
one does not first step foot in the arena a god, it is a title oh so meticulously earned through sway of the crowd and swing of sword, though just as it may be earned that favor can be lost in an instant. to remain a god of the arena is to remain immortal in a mortal's world. scars come with the territory as physical reminders of said mortality for a gladiator will either see himself to freedom or perish an honored death to which an entire world will mourn the loss - forever and always one of rome's favored sons lost too soon. glory far beyond the reach of any other, name spoken in adoration by all, for however long the sands dictate it may last. be it day or year as champion, even a mere second of such glory on the sand stage is the pinnacle of life so many have chased but few have conquered. it's a rarity for champions to maintain their status beyond that of a few years as new rivals emerge and thusly tarnish the streak upheld by the former champions. aeneas, the champion of capua, has been such for 9 years. he holds an unparalleled domination against countless enemies upon the sands. over the years, his bringings to battle have waned; from fully armored with sword and shield to barely emerging with helmet and sword in hand, all for the sake of his reputation among that of the people and the brutish thrill that comes with the fight for one's life. the earnings of such a life in the arena has seen aeneas once reject the offer of the rudis - his frredom - if only to remain and pursue his lifestyle as a grand warrior.
for one so drawn to the admiration of a bloodthirsty crowd, aeneas has but one place in the world to sate his own unconventional need, and it is upon sacred ground. his arena, where a majority of his life has been spent and likely where it shall end, all shrouded in a thick veil of glory and pride at the showmanship he managed to display to make his mark down in the marble of history of men as the greatest gladiator to set foot upon the earth - as a god among men.
