they pulled their blanket up tighter, burying their face in the plush fabric.

the first day they had dismissed it, telling themselves that they were simply worrying themselves sick. the headache was the stress. the sore throat, the dry eyes- they were from crying, no more. after all, they had been so upset, losing their close friend like that- because of something they said, no less. they had no one to blame for this argument but themselves, so how could they not be angry, sad, brokenhearted- all at once? of course they would feel bad after crying themselves to sleep.

but as that day became days, as their tissues became as full of snot as tears, it became obvious their illness was too physical to be simply from the stress.

and so they had been granted the better half of a week, now, sick and tired in bed, to think back on what they had done. no matter how much they wanted to get up, do something else, find something to distract themselves- they found no energy in their body to do so. hence, they had been sitting there, feeling miserable, all this time- thinking themselves a complete and utter fool for losing a friend over something as trivial as an argument. they felt as drowned in stupidity as mucous.

maybe this really was karma, or at least some divine punishment for their thoughtless actions.

ah, once their sinuses cleared up- they told themselves, at least- they would have to call back and apologize.
