Bright lights, a red curtain, and fire. Lots of fire.

"Come one, come all, to the greatest show on Earth!"

A voice boomed in the large speakers overhead. Dancers, Trapezes, and Lion Tamers all tried to take center stage, amazing the audience with their skills. Viscets jumping around, the lions roaring as they tried to get to their masters.

"Fiery fiends! Blazing cold!"

This was the reason Malinda was at the circus at all. She was told by one of her good friends, Kalameet, that his father worked there as a dragon trainer. Malinda had always been infatuated with dragons, though she had never seen them. The idea of flying creatures with fire breath and load roars was something she could only imagine. Well, until now.

From behind the curtain, a pinkish-purple viscet stepped out, holding a match. All lights went out in the test, and all the audience could see was the match, the small fire lighting up the males face eerily, and a loud screech was heard from above. Within the next moment, the male blew out the matches flame and the screeching grew louder. A ring of fire suddenly seemed to appear and the male jumped through it quickly, with something dark landing his shoulder. Another match was lit and it revealed the thing on his shoulder; a small green wyvern with hair that matched the viscetโ€™s mane. The dragon launched itself up again and made a line of fire rings above himself, which he skillfully dove through. After the display of many other fire shapes, some of which being stars, hearts, and triangles, he landed back on his ownerโ€™s shoulder and the lights came back on. The two bowed to the audience and the show ended.

Malinda was the first to applaud the cast, but it was mostly directed towards the dragon tamer. She just couldnโ€™t hold back her amazement. Just seeing a dragon was more than what she ever thought would happen, but seeing one do tricks like that in public? That was amazing to her. When Kalameet first told her about his dad owning a dragon, she didnโ€™t believe him, for she thought that they didnโ€™t exist, but inside she seriously hoped he was right, and now she knows that he was being honest.
Malinda was the last one to leave the tent, not wanting to get caught up in the traffic of all of the viscets trying to leave all at once. The fairโ€™s still going to be there when you leave people, calm down. The other reason was to keep watching Kalameetโ€™s dad and his dragon. She had to ask where he got it. Before she was able to go to ask him, though, he left the tent, leaving her alone inside. She sighed and left the tent.

โ€œI take it that you enjoyed that show?โ€ Kalameet asked as Malinda stepped out of the tent. Without a second thought, she grinned and nodded at him.

โ€œHeck yeah I did! I didnโ€™t think he had a real dragon!!โ€ She exclaimed in excitement. Kalameet gasped and held a paw to his chest in a fake feeling of offense.

โ€œWere you thinking I was a liar, M?โ€ He leaned back and held his free paw to his head. โ€œI am pained! How could you?โ€ The female laughed at his response, lightly punching his shoulder. He stood himself up appropriately again and laughed with her. โ€œAnyway, do you wanna meet my dad and his dragon-โ€œ

โ€œYES!โ€ She yelled quickly, gaining strange looks from those around her. Kalameet quickly lead her away from the people and went towards the back of the tent, where his mother and father were talking. Well, it didnโ€™t really look like it; it looked more like his mother trying to avoid the dragon and his father trying his keep Kalameetโ€™s younger brother occupied. Kalameet strolled over with Malinda right in tow. After a moment, Kalameetโ€™s father looked up and grinned.

โ€œHiya, kiddo! Did you see the show?โ€ He asked, to which Kalameet nodded.

โ€œI did, and so did my friend. She really liked your part.โ€

โ€œOh, did she?โ€ The pinkish viscet strolled over and shook Malindaโ€™s hand. โ€œHello! My name is Simon, and my dragonโ€™s is Vincent. So, who might you be?โ€ He asked cheerfully as Vincent flew away from the dark purple viscet he was bothering before and onto Simonโ€™s shoulder.

โ€œMy name is Malinda. I really liked you and your dragon! Just out of curiosity, where did you get Vincent?โ€ She asked quickly. Simon put a paw to his chin as he tried to remember.

โ€œWell, I got him as a therapy animal. If you havenโ€™t guessed already Iโ€™m a bit of a pyromaniac.โ€ Malindaโ€™s ears fell a bit in dismay before Simon spoke again. โ€œIโ€™m pretty sure I know where you can find one, though.โ€ Malinda looked up at him quickly.

โ€œWhere can I find one?โ€

Simon carefully turned her towards a wooded a good ways past the boundaries the fair was given and pointed towards it. โ€œItโ€™s very rare to see one, but a lot of people had rumored that you can find some there. Just know that they are not initially friendly creatures. Heck, Vincent still doesnโ€™t like Akuma, and weโ€™ve been together for a long time.โ€ He said, pointing towards the purple girl from before. โ€œYouโ€™ll have to try very hard to gain their trust. Itโ€™s a lot of work. So, are you sure you still want one?โ€

Malinda took a second to think. She had never been a very patient girl; even as a kid she wanted things to happen โ€œright now, right now, or Iโ€™ll fight you.โ€ For a moment, she wasnโ€™t sure she would be able to tackle this sort of thing. She closed her eyes, thinking about what could happen if she really tried for this; if she could put aside her impatience and took the time it needed to earn its trust and have it by her side. All of the possibilities she could have if she had something like that with her. She took a deep breath, and looked at him tenaciously.

โ€œYes.โ€

The walk towards the wooded area Simon spoke of was mostly silent, with only the sound of their footsteps and the occasional excited noises from Malinda as their company. When they finally reached the forest, Simon turned to her. โ€œAre you absolutely sure you want to do this. I must warn you again that dragons can be extremely violent when you first meet them.โ€ He warned. Malinda looked to the ground, thinking it over once more before nodding at him.

โ€œYeah. I want to do this.โ€ She said, excitement and determination glinting in her eyes. Simon only sighed, looking to his dragon quietly. He remembered how long it took for Vincent to finally like him, despite him coming into Simonโ€™s life as a therapy animal. He could only imagine how difficult it would be for her to get a newborn to like her. Maybe not all that longโ€ฆ He thought, After all, it would be a newborn.. but stillโ€ฆ His thoughts were cut short as he heard Malinda run into the forest, leaving him on the outskirts of the trees that now surrounded her.

โ€œNow, if I were a dragon,โ€ She started, looking around and scratching her head, โ€œWhere would I be..?โ€

She had already been in that forest for about an hour, with no luck in finding any dragons. She had come across a couple squirrels or mice here and there, and would sometimes hear something that sounded like a roar in the distance, but by the time she got anywhere it was gone and she would have to start back at square one.

Eventually she found a beautifully lit grove in the forest; the trees spaced apart perfectly, so as the sunโ€™s light came down as rays and streaks and gave the area a calming an peaceful air. In the middle of the grove was a nest, made from leaves, sticks, rocks, and just a bit of fur and, within the nest, laid a brown, yellow, and tan egg. The patterns on it reminded her of a normal viscet egg, but the horn-like structures on the egg told her it did not belong to a viscet. Is this a dragon egg? Oh I hope so!! Malinda thought as she drew closer to the nest. Looking at the egg more closely, now, she saw that the horn-like pieces were not real horns, but rather they were simply part of the egg. When she picked it up, the egg felt heavy and oddly scaly, confirming in her mind that this was, in fact, a dragon egg.

Image

She grinned in excitement, looking around for a moment to make sure she was safe before taking off in a random direction, carefully carrying the egg in her paws. She felt the egg start to shake and she stopped dead in her tracks. She looked to the egg only to find it cracking and breaking as the shaking grew faster and more violent.

Suddenly, the egg nearly exploded open and the dragon jumped out, screeching and screaming at her, wet with the water and other fluids that had been in the egg. Malinda wiped her face, cleaning herself of the same liquids the dragon was covered in and growled a bit. โ€œHey! What was that for?!โ€

The dragon roared at her, though it sounded more like a puppyโ€™s howling. She tried to grab the dragon, only for it to attempt to fly away, but due to the heavy liquids and his newborn body, it got a foot off the ground and fell down. She was able to pick it up and glare at it before she heard a real roar nearby. A real dragon roar; one a mother might have when someoneโ€™s trying to steal her baby.

Just my luck. The mom found me. She thought, currently very much regretting this mission she had made for herself. She saw the mother roaring at her on the tree in front of her. Malinda wrapped her tail around the baby dragon and held her paws up, trying to show the mother that she was okay to be around, but the elder dragon took no heed. She leapt off the tree and flew towards her quickly. In an instant, Malinda gasped and quickly evaded the motherโ€™s attack. She ran away from the elder dragon with a scream, only to hear a few more join the chase.

Image

I have to get away from these things! She thought. I gotta get to water, get rid of our scents. She looked back at the dragon wrapped in her tail and heard it screeching at her, both in fear and anger. She scowled a bit and faced forward again, finally coming upon a lake. Without a second thought, she jumped in, carefully holding the dragonโ€™s nose above the water while she held her breath. She waited about ten seconds before hearing the dragonsโ€™ roars come towards the lake, then quickly pass. Another five seconds went by and she felt safe, quickly swimming to the surface and gasping for air. She held the dragon to her chest as she made her way out of the lake, running in the opposite direction from which the dragons flew.

The dragon in her arms was no longer screaming, instead resorting to fearful whines and trembling. Malinda found herself suddenly feeling guilty. What had she just done..? She separated a mother from her baby and ran away with it. How else is a horrible viscet defined? She thought about returning the dragon, but she knew that if she found the mother, she would certainly be killed. Now she would be forever weighed down with the guilt that came with this. A grumbling noise came from the dragon, and she had to guess that it must have been hungry. From what she understood, dragons were omnivores. Not wanting to see an animalโ€™s guts being eaten, she decided finding berries for the baby would be a much more favorable choice.

Carefully traversing the forest floor, she looked around for some berries or fruit that the dragon could eat. She soon found the grove she had found the dragonโ€™s egg and saw a bush of blueberries. She set the baby dragon in the nest and picked berries off of the bush before returning and sitting by the dragon, holding a berry in her paw and offering it to the dragon. The dragon leaned towards her paw and sniffed the berry in suspicion. When it felt it was same, it grabbed the berry in its maw and ate it quickly. Every berry that offered after that one the dragon scarfed down. Malinda couldnโ€™t help but smile. Maybe this wouldnโ€™t be so hard. She seemed to have gained a little bit of its trust, at least.

She carefully picked it up and set it on her back while she got a couple of berries for her to eat. She carefully walked through the forest as she searched for her way out. When she had left the grove, she made sure she went the way that she had found it the first time. The dragon had eventually fallen asleep and she had to carry it in her arms. While the guilt she felt was still there, she felt a form of happiness she hadnโ€™t felt before, one a mother figure would feel for her child. She was glad that she had come to the forest. In her head, she knew the mother would find a new baby to care for, and she would eventually move on.

She returned to the circus area, seeing Kalameetโ€™s family talking again. She had only then realized how late it actually was, with the sky dark above her and the lights in the circus tents glowing brightly in contrast. Kalameet looked up and gasped, running over to her quickly.

โ€œYou actually got a dragon?! No way! Dad! Come look!โ€ He called, his eyes wide in amazement. Malinda growled at him and held a paw over his mouth, carefully holding the baby dragon in her other hand.

โ€œBe quiet.โ€ She growled softly. โ€œThe dragonโ€™s trying to sleep.โ€ She brought her paw away when she knew he would be more quiet. Simon came over and looked at the dragon in her arms.

โ€œA wyvern. A male one it looks like, with those colors and markings. Those horns are a hint too.โ€ He carefully picked it up from her arms and carefully looked over it, making sure it was healthy and unharmed. โ€œIโ€™m surprised you found one. Is it a newborn?โ€ He asked, his voice low as to not wake the sleeping dragon. Malinda nodded in response, reaching out to hold the dragon again. Simon carefully returned him to her and pet his own dragonโ€™s head. โ€œYou gained his trust much more quickly than I did with Vincent here. Then again, Vincent is much older than him, soโ€ฆ I suppose newborns have much more easily influenced minds.โ€ He thought aloud, with Malinda nodding again. Kalameets younger brother, Ryujin, looked up and grinned at her.

โ€œYou should give him a name.โ€ He suggested, pointing at the dragon she held. Malinda looked at him, then to the baby boy in her paws and smiled.

โ€œYeah, I should.โ€ She said. She tried to think of one, but her mind was blank, likely from being so tired after the dayโ€™s event. She looked back to the child and smiled at him. โ€œWhat should his name be?โ€ Ryujin hummed and put a paw to his chin as he thought. He grinned and laughed as he thought of one.

โ€œRyuu!โ€ He said excitedly. The group chucked under their breath as Malinda grinned at him.

โ€œYou want me to name him after you?โ€
She asked, with Ryujin responding with a nod and a giggle. Malinda chuckled with him and looked at the dragon again. โ€œAlright then.โ€

โ€œHis name with be Ryuu.โ€

Training Ryuu wrote:โ€œNo! Ryuu! Get down from there!!โ€

โ€œStop breathing fire youโ€™re gonna burn the house down!!โ€

โ€œRyuu! Stop eating all the blueberries! Theyโ€™re for my friends!!โ€

Training Ryuu was quite a challenge. When Malinda got him, she was hoping to be able to have him trained in a month or so, like a puppy she had when I was little. Itโ€™s been four months and he still doesnโ€™t know how to stop breathing fire on everything. He growls at anyone who isnโ€™t Malinda, despite her best efforts to introduce him to the others slowly. He eats anything that he get his grubby little hands on, but itโ€™s mostly fruits since her donโ€™t eat all that much meat. Either way, I knew that he would need much more training.

So she made a call.

A ringing sound filled the house and caused Ryuu to start screeching loudly. He flew into the front door to try to scare whoever was on the other side. Malinda huffed a bit and grabbed him, holding him away from the door as she opened it. Simon waited on the other side, a smile of his face and his dragon at his side. Malinda grinned and shook Simonโ€™s paw in glee. โ€œHiya, Simon!โ€

โ€œHey, Malinda! I heard you need help with some training?โ€ He asked with a chuckle. Malinda rubbed the back of her neck and laughed awkwardly. Ryuu suddenly flew past her and right into Simon before returning to Malindaโ€™s shoulder. Simon stood up again, holding his head as his dragon flew into Ryuu, launching him off of her shoulder. As the dragons began to fight, both viscets sighed at them.

โ€œYea. I need help with his training.โ€ She huffed, watching as the two dragons scratched and clawed at each other. After a minute or two, the two viscets finally intervened and grabbed their respective dragons, holding the two as far apart as possible. Simon nodded to Malinda and put Vincent in an area where he wouldnโ€™t be tempted to fight. He then had Malinda put Ryuu on the floor and sit down with him. He went towards the cabinets and grabbed a hidden bowl of blueberries. Ryuu immediately tried to fly towards them but Malinda held him down. Simon came over and Ryuu.

โ€œSo, weโ€™ll try the oldest trick. Weโ€™ll train him using treats.โ€ He handed the bowl to Malinda and she took it, holding her dragon with her free hand. โ€œWhen he does what we want him to, you give him a treat. If he doesnโ€™t, you donโ€™t.โ€ He explained simply. She nodded and hid the bowl behind her and let Ryuu go.

Simon sat down in front of him, causing him to growl angrily. Malinda tapped Ryuu on the head and he looked back at her, startled. She shook her head at him. โ€œNo growling.โ€ Ryuu looked pretty upset, but didnโ€™t make any other noises. That was until Simon scooted a bit closer. She let out a low growl for a moment, then cut himself short, knowing his owner wouldnโ€™t like it. Malinda felt he did well enough and gave him one of the berries, to which he happily scarfed down. After a few more attempts with Simon they began to train him with Vincent. Simon had him relatively under control, but Ryuu had to be corrected more than once that fighting was a bad thing. A couple of hours passed and Ryuu was more comfortable with the two and more trained than Malinda would ever had made him by herself, but now came the hard part. She had to see if he would keep to his training around other people.

Simon called his family over to test if Ryuu would keep what he had learned in mind. When they knocked on the door, Ryuu seemed to be struggling to not fly towards the door or roar at it, to which Malinda rewarded him for keeping up his good behavior. She knew that he was starting to learn thanks to Simonโ€™s training tactics. She decided to keep this in mind for future training. When his family walked in, Ryuu wrapped himself around Malindaโ€™s neck in order to keep himself from flying into them, again earning his favorite berry. The family stayed for dinner and Ryuu was more well behaved than he had ever been before. Ryuu had even managed to build a relationship with Kalameet, which he had previously hated for spending so much time with his owner (the little brat.) Soon enough, they all had to leave so they could go home and sleep, with the sun already have set about an hour before.

โ€œThank you for coming over, guys,โ€ She said, grinning at them before turning to Simon, โ€œand thank you for helping me train Ryuu. Youโ€™ve been a big help!โ€ She said gratefully. Simon grinned at her, petting his dragon.

โ€œItโ€™s no problem, Malinda,โ€ he started happily, โ€œJust let me know if you ever need any more help with this little boy and Iโ€™ll be right on over.โ€ He insisted as Vincent flew over to the dragon resting on Malindaโ€™s head before something to Ryuu, who screeched back, seemingly a lot more calmly than their initial speech patterns, before Vincent flew back onto Simonโ€™s shoulder. Malinda chuckled and nodded to Simon.

โ€œThank you for the offer. I might have to take you up on it!โ€

The two waved goodbye to each other and left for the night.

Additional Relationships wrote:Kalameet โ€“
Theyโ€™d been best friends for as long as Malinda could remember. They saw each other as siblings, and Kalameet said that they were closer to each other than he was to his own mother. They would hang out every chance they got, and after she got out of school, Malinda had a lot more free time to spend with him. Malinda feels as though Kalameet is her rock, someone she can lean of when she needs it, and she feels safe whenever heโ€™s around. She just hopes that he feels that sheโ€™s just as important to him as he is to her.

Simonโ€“
She is amazed by him, and she admits that he is one of her inspirations. Kalameet had told her about his dad owning a dragon and he would brag about how cool it is, so she was inspired by him before she had even met him. When she did meet him, though, she saw how he was a lot more laid back than she thought. He was still just as exciting to her as she had always thought, though, even if he didnโ€™t show it. He helped her live her dream of getting her dragon and even helped to train it. She couldnโ€™t thank him enough for helping her.

Ryujin โ€“
Kalameetโ€™s little brother and one of the cutest viscets she had ever met. Despite his โ€œscaryโ€ appearance, he seemed to just be a big olโ€™ softie. He had helped her name the dragon she had gotten and she was happy he did. Eventually she wants to get to know Ryujin better.

Relationship with the dragon;;
As a biologist, it was her life's work to study life, specifically plants. The only animals she really studied were those that had a specific partnership with the plants she studied. Currently, she was looking for a very rare plant. It was said to not use photosynthesis, and instead took energy from fungus underground. This has piqued her interest so she purchased a ticket, got on a series of planes, and then paid cash to be taken out to a specific place via boat. She had made plans to study rare plants, and like usual, life felt otherwise.

Her first night truly on her own a huge storm blew in. She gathered as much as she could, and made her way to a gave she had seen coming in to the area. It wasn't far, but the ground was quickly churning to slippery mud. The cave would've been inaccessible to most people, but she had enough experience rock climbing to make it up to the lip. It was risky, but so was staying near the river. She was panting from the effort, and leaned heavily against the cave wall. She had tied a few large branches and a piece of a log to her bag for a fire.

Taking another moment to catch her breath, she started to rummage through her kindling bag to get the fire started, and to dry out some of the wood before she burned it. The wind shifted direction and she was forced further into the cave. Luckily, the cave was on a slight incline, so the water didn't pool towards her. She lit a match to get the fire going. Then she heard it. It almost sounded like bats, but the sound was all wrong. Scales scraping against the rocks echoed through the cave.

She grabbed her flashlight and clicked it on. Athena examined the shadows of the cave, and settled down when she didn't see anything. That was her first mistake. Her second was flicking the flashlight off. A loud screeching thing with wings went after her face. She threw her paws to her face to protect her eyes. Viscous little teeth drew pinpricks of blood from her. Then it stopped and went after her bag. Whatever that thing was, it had smelled the dried meat she had pulled out. The sounds of ravenous eating filled the cave, and then nothing. She had an uneasy night.

She somehow managed to climb down and gather more wood without slipping when she was low on wood. On the second night she got a more clear look at what had attacked her that first night. It was a wyvern! They were very rare, and usually much larger than this one. But then again, those were older adults. No one had ever seen a young or baby wyvern; until now that is. She pulled out her sketchbook when it walked near the fire, its belly full. It curled up and went to sleep. Quietly, Athena began to sketch what she saw.

She was really glad her sketchbooks weren't damaged, or her camera. However, the wyvern really didn't like electric lights of any kind. So, the sketchbook it was. She got a few sketches done before the wyvern woke from its nap. It looked up at her and glared before screeching. In a blur it was gone, back to the further reaches of the cave. She sighed and pulled out some jerky and began to gnaw on it. The storm lasted for nearly three days.

When the storm was over she carefully climbed out of the cave, bringing everything with her. That wyvern had nipped at her so much it was a wonder she hadn't gotten an infection. The length of the storm also meant that it would be weeks, or longer, before the rest of her team would get there. She usually went ahead of them, but no more than a few days to a week. She had enough supplies to last her a week, maybe more if she stretched the food out. The water was non-negotiable, and she had managed to stretch out her jugs of fresh water by making a rain catcher from one of her tarps.

She went to work quickly. Athena gathered materials and put them into piles. Straight sticks here, straight logs there, bendable branches over there, and so on. She didn't get very far before the familiar sound of the wyvern's screeching sounded above her. It dove through the canopy right at her! She ducked and it chittered angrily as it swept up to a branch. It kept hissing at her. from its perch. It did not like her being so close to its cave. That message was clear.

She grumbled and made a sledge to ferry her goods further away. She packed everything onto it that she wouldn't carry with her now. Then, she started making her way towards what she hoped was a hill. She made sure to leave path markers so she could find her way back. There were as increasing number of rocks, and then finally she got to the hill.nestled into it was a rocky cave. She knew this area was littered with caves, but another one so close to that large one?

Seeing how close this cave was also made her watch where she stepped. She wasn't a geologist, so she didn't know what rocks were weaker and whatnot. Better safe than sorry. She carefully examined the cave. It didn't go back too far like the other cave, but it was large enough for her purposes. Plus, the ceiling sloped up so no smoke would get pushed back further into the cave. She shrugged off her bags and stacked some of the rocks carefully on top of them to discourage any animals from getting into her stuff.

The walk back was nicer, and she enjoyed the freedom from carrying large amounts of gear on her back. Then all too soon she was back in the clearing, with the angry shrieking wyvern. The angry shrieking wyvern followed her all the way to the cave, and once it saw she was unloading her stuff there it waited long enough to make sure she wouldn't head back. She mumbled under her breath as the near constant hissing grated on her nerves. Once the makeshift sledge was completely unloaded the wyvern took off.

Athena explored the area around her cave. she quickly found the small clearing just above the cave, and she could see what she thought was the wyvern flying above the trees. She then climbed back down to start working on making the cave more livable, and better defended. She wedged straight logs into rocks near the entrance and had them lean against the hill above the cave opening. She then weaved the bendy branches between them, got some more rocks to pile around the base of the logs to make the more stable. Then she layered ferns over it to help keep the rain out. She used a tarp to catch the rain just outside the cave mouth.

The week passed quickly, and still no sign of her team. She had hoped they may come for her sooner, but had doubted they would actually risk the collapse of a river bank or the still raging river. Occasionally she'd see the wyvern bobbing in the winds, or catching fish in the river when she went there too. She didn't let the lack of a team set back her study. She had marked several potential areas that the rare plants could be. She went over the old notes again, and realized that the plant may actually be several different species.

She was going to one of these marked areas that she saw them. At first she didn't know who they were, or why they were this far into the jungle. Then she saw the rifles. Athena quietly moved so she was downwind of them, and could both see and hear them. The snippets of conversation she heard disturbed her.

"... sure that it's here? I don't want to waste money again..."

"... know it's here. I saw it get away myself. We were too busy..."

"... better get my money's worth..."

" Yes sir"

Athena then saw the cage. Solid iron, thick bars for something so small. She could see the gouges in it. She raced back to the gave to drop off her gear. By the time she got to the wyvern's cave it was too late. She could see the men loading it up into the cage. Anger filled her as she saw them lowering the cage from the cave entrance. So much so, that she started to growl. The men stopped what they were doing and looked in her direction. They couldn't see her, yet.

The biologist slowly emerged from the brush, looking quite feral with all of the mud and debris matted in her fur. The men laughed nervously; they hadn't brought enough tranquilizer to take down a crazed viscet. One of the men tried to offer a chunk of raw meat to her. She just growled louder and bared her teeth. The one who seemed to have funded the expedition was hiding behind a tree, hoping she hadn't seen him. When she took a step froward, they all took a step back.

No one wanted to be withing easy reach of her, and that would work out just fine. She kept up the crazed and feral act. Soon she was between them and the cage with the wyvern. In her head she was thinking of all of the things they might have done to the baby. They could've clipped its wings, in one of several ways. They could've kept it in a tiny cage on display to either public or private visitors. The potential fates went on. She cleared these thoughts form her head and tried to figure out a way to take off with the cage. Then another thought hit her.

"GrrrRRrrrrrrrr... Keeeyyyyysssssss... Snrrk Rrrrrrrrrrrrr NOW!" She snarled.

The men clambered and tossed the keys at her.She picked them up in her mouth, and slowly backed up until she was even with the cage. She pretended to fumble getting it open. The longer they thought she was some feral, the better. It meant they wouldn't try to provoke her. Athena gingerly picked the wyvern up with her mouth. She gave one last hard glare before she took off into the trees.

She looped back on herself, and did everything she could to keep them from tracking her back to her cave. A few times she could hear their angry shouts and yelling, sometimes clearly enough to know that they were bickering with each other. At last she came to her cave. She looked over the wyvern. She knew enough about draconian biology to be able to help them. The little wyvern was starting to come to. Athena had taken the time to gather plants she knew were helpful over the past week. She gathered these now and made a paste. She gently smeared it over some of the bruised scales and wing membranes.

The wyvern fell asleep once the medicine began to seep in; its pain relieved. Athena looked around, but she didn't have any fresh meat, or really meat of any kind. She had some smoked and dried fish, but it wouldn't be enough for them both. She made the tough decision to leave the wyvern here. Before she left she took the time to hide the entrance to her cave. Looking down at herself, she saw that even with the mud from her crazed run earlier, her scales were still too visible. She didn't have to look very far to find mud.

She smeared all over where her scales were visible, and anywhere the light markings were. She felt itchy, but she'd have to deal with it. She waited until at least some of the mud was dry before she put her bag back on. In it had she had basic fishing supplies that all members of her team were given. She went to the bend she preferred to fish at. It didn't take long before she had enough fish to last them awhile. On the way back she gathered more plants for the wyvern, and some edibles for herself.

She had found a way to make soup. It required the use of one of her tarps, but the it was worth it. It was also better than having a constant roaring fire. The smells woke up the wyvern. At first it snarled and hissed at her. Then it stopped and looked curiously up at her from the corner it had wedged itself into. Cautiously, it stepped out. It examined the makeshift bowl she set out with suspicion, but hunger overpowered caution. Soon the bowl was licked clean, and the little wyvern was curled up next to the hot stones.

It still snapped at her if she got too close, and only tolerated her touch so she could rub the soothing paste, but it was progress. The men left. She hoped they wouldn't come back. And still she continued to build trust with the wyvern. It was very intelligent. It quickly learned which plants she needed to make the paste. When it was back to being able to fly short distances it would occasionally go and fetch of the plants if it saw she was running low on any of them. Athena wondered if it was male or female. She couldn't tell, and because it was so young she couldn't just ask it.

Then one day the wyvern brought back a bird. Not just nay bird, but a wild chicken. If Zeke had been there he would've been able to tell her precisely what the bird was, and name all known relatives of it. She knew that it just looked like a chicken. She even laid eggs. The wyvern grumped for a day when she didn't let it eat the eggs right away. When she decided to make something with them, the wyvern perched curiously on the branches she set up for it.

Then it flapped to her shoulder and peered curiously around her to see what she was doing. She had found some tuberous plants the other day, and had gone out that morning to gather more. She was now mashing it up, along with a few other things. The wyvern whined when it saw her crack open the eggs to mush into the doughy food. Then she thoroughly mixed it up, made little cakes, wrapped them in leaves, and left them in the fire to cook. The wyvern tried to pick out one of the bundles, but she caught it and it slowly backed away. That made her laugh.

The wyvern didn't like her laughing at it, and flapped angrily in her face, scolding her with various chitters and chirps and hisses. It calmed down with a gentle rub on the side of its head. She could still hear it grumbling from its nest. She could hear the sound of cracking bones, and rolled her eyes. Like a small child who had been caught with their hand in the cookie jar. Athena looked up at the wall. She had kept track of how many days she had spent here. Along some of the mountain cliffs she found a few pieces of chalk, and used those to make marks on the wall.

It had been over a month. She considered gathering up enough supplies to trek back down the river towards the village, but she knew she couldn't leave the wyvern. It probably wanted to stay here. This was, after all, its home. She wondered about her team, and why they hadn't come yet. She checked on the food cakes. The wyvern's head slowly snaked up over the edge of its nest to watch her. She pretended not to see. When she pulled one of the of them out to to break it up and taste test it, she could hear the wyvern softly chittering to itself.

She held out one of the pieces to it, and the chittering stopped. Within a second it was on her shoulder munching on the piece of food. It looked hungrily at the rest, and she left it to eat. She needed to go fishing again. Well, at least that's what she told herself. It would also give her a chance to look over those plants. With the wyvern's help she had found a small population of them along one part of the river. She was now dong what she could to study it. She didn't have all of the equipment, but there were still things she could measure.

Once her daily detour was out of the way she reached the riverbank. Athena went through the motions of catching fish, pulling them in, and such, when she heard it. The sound of a motor. Fearing that the men from before were back she hid in the trees. She watched as the boat rounded the bend, and noticed it wasn't a plain motorboat, it was one of the larger riverboats. She watched carefully, and then saw who stepped off. It was her team! She ran down the riverbank as they organized what she later learned was a search and rescue.

She must've been quite the sight, with matted fur, and filthy scratched up scales. Her team hugged her and patted her on the back when they realized she had survived all this time just fine. Then they were attacked by the screeching rage that was the baby wyvern. It perched on her shoulder and wrapped its tail possessively around her neck while making low hissing noises. Her team watched flabbergasted as she pulled out a piece of dried fish and fed it to the wyvern.

She broke the rest of it up and gave everyone a few pieces to give to the wyvern. Zeke was the last one to come up, and by this point the wyvern was watching them all with a mock suspicious glare. She knew by now that it was all an act, and it was actually very curious about them. Zeke offered the pieces of fish, and the wyvern snootily accepted them. It even let him rub its head and part of its side. Athena hadn't realized how large the wyvern really was. Compared to her it wasn't very big, but just one of its wings was the length of the some of her human friends' torsos.

She showed them where she had been living, and where the plants were. They had brought the rest of their equipment with them, because they didn't want to leave it. The had paid the boat captain to stay here for a few weeks to look for Athena, and once she had been found he wanted to head back. The argued they had still paid for the captain to remain here, and guess what? He wasn't wasting fuel going up and down the river like the had originally planned.

While she and the rest of the team studied the plants, Zeke studied the wyvern. No one before had seen a baby wyvern, at least, long enough to tell the tail. Wyverns were notorious for how protective they were of those they kept watch over. They grew out of their possessiveness of people, usually. Zeke had also come to learn that the wyvern was female. He was also fascinated watching it interact with the jungle chicken. When someone had joked about butchering and eating it, the little wyvern had screeched and tried to go after them with tooth and claw. Athena had to come and pry the screeching creature off of poor Milo.

When it was time to go, Athena felt torn. She didn't want to leave the wyvern, but she couldn't stay either. Athena had explained to the wyvern that she had to go. The little one had huffed, and she noticed for the first time there was smoke coming out of her nostrils. Then she took off. Athena felt a deep sadness as she watched the disappearing shape of the wyvern. Her team had done their best to comfort her, but it was no use. She had done her best to distance herself form the wyvern knowing that would have to leave. She would carry these memories with her for life, but that didn't change the bitter sadness she felt.

The captain was getting irritable, and they packed up all of their equipment. They also took last minute photos for documentations sake. Zeke was just as sad as she was when the wyvern had flown off. The boat was chugging along the river. They were halfway back to the village. That was when she heard a familiar flapping sound. She looked back and saw the wyvern flying towards them. Grasped carefully in her talons was the bird. It collapsed onto the deck panting.

The jungle bird angrily clucked as it got out from underneath the tired wyvern. The wyvern perked up when she saw Athena. When she was scooped up by Zeke she hummed happily. He brought her to Athena, and she perched happily on Athena's shoulder. Her team smiled at her as she rubbed the wyvern. That night everyone had gathered below deck to discuss a name for the wyvern. The wyvern was happily munching on cooked fish in the middle of the table.

They all tried different names, and she didn't like any of them. Jessie, Elaine, Lisbeth, Gawaina, Grace, Molly, Juliette, Abby, and many other names were tried out. She showed distaste for them all. Athena was hoping she'd take to Aphrodite as a sort of joke, but she didn't like that one either. Zeke piped up with a name. Adderyn. The wyvern looked up and coked her head. Athana said the name again, and the wyvern looked at her and chirped a question. They all cheered and patted Zeke on the back.

Everyone in the village was awestruck when Athena came down the ramp with a wyvern on her shoulder. Then a group of angry men came storming up to them. They all started shouting at her. She gave a smiling snarl at them while Adderyn hissed. Suddenly they knew who she was, and backed away scared from the memory. She Resisted the urge to laugh, and her teammates were giving her odd looks. She'd tell them later.

Despite being with them for a few weeks, she hadn't told them about the poachers. She did that night. They were all outraged, especially Zeke. He pet the jungle bird they all decided to call Clucks. Clucks was more than happy to sit in his lap and have him pet and ruffle her feather. They decided to contact the local government. Athena groaned when she thought about how she'd get Adderyn back home with her. Wyverns were a protected species. Protected usually mean keeping a close eye on all of the adults and making sure they were comfortable wherever they may be in the world.

Recently a wyvern had decided to move into New York. that had Caused quite the uproar, but she was perfectly civilized. Newcomers and tourists still gave odd looks when they saw her walking around Central Park, or going to the open markets to get food and other things. She had purchased an old warehouse to live in. She had used some of the gold and gems in her hoard to purchase the property, and then had those converted into currency to live off of.

It wouldn't be unheard of to bring a wyvern into the city. The issue was that Adderyn was a baby. Athena hoped they wouldn't try to take her from her, or try to force her to give Adderyn to an adult wyvern. It turned out, to be a lot bigger than just the local government. The UN became involved, and a hunt was on for the poachers. The officials were particularly concerned when she told them what she had heard them say. A huge debate went up in the UN on who would care for the wyvern. They refused to call her by her name.

Despite the huge debate, the UN wanted the baby wyvern to remain a secret to keep people from coming trying to steal her. It leaked within a week of the debates opening. Soon the whole world knew of the wyvern currently under the care of a botanist. Everyone had something to say about it. Athena just wanted to take Adderyn and go home. If her landlord didn't like having a wyvern in his building she would find somewhere to live where Adderyn wasn't an issue.

Soon the UN got back to them. They couldn't find the poachers, but they were on international wanted lists now. Also, she could keep Adderyn. They had written to several of the adult wyverns who were on good terms with people to ask their opinion on the matter. They all agreed Athena should be the one to care for Adderyn. The also said that they should stop calling her an it, and that she had chosen her name so they better call her by it.

Athena had to charter a private plane to take her home, as no airline wanted to have a wyvern on board. It ate away at her bank account, and her savings. When she walked into her building, she was half expecting an eviction notice, instead her landlord told her she would have to pay for any damages done by the wyvern. Then he gave her a coin and Adderyn was fascinated by it for the next day. Athena started to wyvern-proof her apartment.

It took two weeks of learning for them both. Adderyn had her own room, and the door was cut in half. A blind of sorts was put on the top half that Athena had showed her how to use. The window was changed to one that would allow her to fly when she wished. Baubles and shiny things quickly decorated the room. After the first few thefts, Athena had explained that Adderyn couldn't just take things. Now the little wyvern often returned the shiny things she found on the streets of Seattle.

A few weeks later, she stopped bringing back crafted items. Athena was amazed at all of the natural metals and uncut stones Adderyn brought back. She was also fond of giving these items as gifts. Sometimes Athena would find something on her bed, or on her table. These gifts weren't just for her, either. Sometimes Adderyn gave them to strangers on the street when they went out running errands. Her team was also showered with gifts whenever Adderyn saw them or they came to visit.

Clucks stayed with Zeke, since he lived outside of Seattle. Adderyn visited him often, mainly to see Clucks. Athena had a few custom made stuffed animals made to look like Clucks for Adderyn. When she presented one of them to Adderyn she cooed softly and carefully set it in her nest and snuggled with it. This made her chuckle.

Athena had also got in contact with a few wyverns. Especially the one in New York. They had advised her on the appropriate diet for a young wyvern, and yes the shiny hunting and hoarding was normal. She made plans to go see the New York wyvern, Nelira, with Adderyn. When she explained the visit to her, she hopped around and blew smoke rings. Athena knew not all wyverns could breather fire, but signs of it in some way usually showed up at a young age, according to them.

Athena just hoped she wouldn't set the building on fire accidentally. Nelira couldn't breathe fire, which was one of the reason she had been so readily accepted by the people of New York. However, her brother could. She told Athena that Adderyn's progress was quite good, including speech. This confused Athena, but then Nelira explained that as a wyvern grew, so did their desire to learn. When she had met Adderyn, the little wyvern didn't understand anything she said.

Now, Adderyn understood her perfectly, and was even trying to say words to communicate better with her. Then she clicked and spoke wyvern speak to Adderyn. Athena was probably the only one in the world who had some understanding of their language, or just how refined it was. When it was time to go home, Adderyn said goodbye to Nelira.

How the years flew. Athena watched as Adderyn more than doubled in size, and was now as big as a human. After the visit with Nelira it didn't take long for her to master speech. Like Nelira had said, Adderyn was a voracious learner. She had mastered several languages, and was currently learning a dozen more. She also managed to finagle her way into one of the universities where she was allowed to attend some of the seminars and lectures. While intelligent, she was still just a child. She really liked painting, and her "room" was covered in large colorful canvases.

They no longer lived in an apartment, either. Adderyn had offered part of her hoard to use as a way to get money to buy some land. Adderyn's idea of "some land" was a few hundred acres. There was also a wyvern sized greenhouse. Nelira often came to visit, and so did the other wyverns who lived on the continent. Life really did have different plans for her, thought Athena. She looked over and saw the all of the plants they had managed to grow, specifically the ones from Adderyn's birth jungle, and smiled.

xxxxxxxxxxxxRelationship with the Dragon:

xxxImage
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx--Art by Brandy6--

She was cold. The viscet could only shiver in the small stack
of rocks where she had buried herself to hide from the
brutal wind outside. She was so afraid, afraid that she might
not get the chance to see the rest of her life. Thatโ€™s when
she heard the sound of wings. She remembered the
stories she had heard from those in town about the
Valkyries who would save the strong female warriors in
battles. She wondered if they were coming for her now.
Coming to take her from this battle with the cold.
She closed her eyes to let them take her. Anywhere was
better than here, in the blistering cold.

She woke to warmth and wondered if this was the afterlife.
She opened her eyes and looked around to see a wyvern
perched nearby blowing hot air on a bed of coals to warm
the cave up. The viscet sat up and looked at the wyvern
who was too distracted to pay much attention to the small
form waking up. The viscet stood unsteadily and stumbled
a bit which caught the wyvern's attention. She quickly
stretched out her nose to help steady the little viscet and
smiled at her. The viscet looked at the wyvern confused as
she had heard stories of dragons stealing young viscets to
eat, but this one was very motherly towards her. The
wyvern helped the little viscet to a soft bed of grasses and
once settled in, the wyvern moved towards another bed,
this one slightly larger to settle in herself. She rested her
head on the edge and watched the viscet with as much
curiosity as the viscet did.

โ€œMy name is Rea. What is yours?โ€ The dragon spoke
softly and the viscet felt secure knowing this dragon
had no intentions of feasting on her.

โ€œI donโ€™t have one. My parents only called me child.โ€ The
viscet spoke calmly and the dragon nodded in understanding.

โ€œI see. You must be tired. Why donโ€™t you rest and we will
speak more in the morning?โ€ The wyvern breathed more
on the coals causing them to glow brighter and the viscet
nodded.

After some tossing and turning, the viscet looked toward
the wyvern, โ€œMs. Rea, I cannot sleep. Can you tell me a
story?โ€

Rea looked at the small viscet and smiled, โ€œAbout
what child?โ€

โ€œWhen you found me, I thought you were a Valkyrie
coming to save me from the cold. Do you know much
about them?โ€

โ€œNot much. I do know they are strong females who
protect those in battle. They are revered for their
bravery when it comes to difficulties and they are a
guardian for young girls,โ€ Rea spoke calmly, looking
into the bright blue eyes of the little viscet, โ€œThey
probably would be very proud of you being so
calm and brave in the face of a dragon such as you are.โ€

The little viscet smiled tiredly, โ€œMe? A Valkyrie?โ€

The dragon leaned in and nuzzled the viscet gently,
โ€œOf course. You are a little Valkyrie to me now.โ€

The viscet fell asleep and the wyvern gazed down the
cave to the little egg nestled in a bundle of grasses.
The dragon was awaiting the hatching of her own
child when she found the viscet out in the freezing
weather. Seemed like she would have her hands full with
raising the both of them.

In the morning, Rea started to teach Valkyrie about how
to prepare the cave for spring. She directed her as they
worked to which mosses were the warmest and which
would make the cave smell bad. She taught her how to
pick berries that were ripe and how to hunt for the fish
that would provide the most nutrients. Rea carried the
viscet on her back so she could memorize the area from
the air and then let the little viscet explore the woods
more closely when they were grounded. Rea helped the
viscet learn how to climb and Valkyrie helped Rea in the
water where the dragon was less suited.

The cave slowly became covered in moss and vines as the
snow melted. One day Valkyrie heard the clicking of claws
coming from the small egg at the far end of the cave.

โ€œRea! The egg! I heard it! Is it hatching?โ€ Valkyrie bounded
over to it excitedly, putting her ear to the shell to listen
closer. Rea rested behind Valkyrie watching the young
viscet moving carefully around the egg.

Rea shook her head, โ€œno, not yet.โ€

โ€œDo you think it will be a boy or girl?โ€ Valkyrie

asked as she looked towards Rea who shrugged.

โ€œI have no idea. I know if it is a boy he will be named
Strath and if it is a girl then she will be Morrighan,โ€ Rea
responded before blowing a puff of hot air to rustle the
viscets fur, โ€œNow come child. Let the wyvern egg rest
and I need you to do something for me.โ€

Valkyrie nodded and left the eggโ€™s side and followed Rea
outside the cave and where she stretched her wings, โ€œNow
Valkyrie, I need you to stay here with the egg and to keep
watch on it. I must venture to the far side of the mountain.โ€

Rea looked towards the mountain in the distance and
Valkyrie felt nervous, โ€œWhy must you go so far?โ€

โ€œYoung wyverns require a special type of herb in order for
their wings to develop. All mothers must travel to see the
wise elder in her cave in order to get it.โ€

Valkyrie was still nervous but nodded as she knew that it was
something that could not be avoided if the young wyvern
was to grow up to be strong like their mother.

โ€œNow Valkyrie, make sure you both stay safe and stock up
on insects for when the egg hatches; the wyvern will be
very hungry. I should be back within 3 days but it may take
me as long as 5.โ€ Rea nuzzled the viscet, โ€œyou mustnโ€™t follow
me. Stay here and protect the egg as the journey to the elder
is very dangerous, even for wyverns who can fly over most of
the danger.โ€

Valkyrie nodded and snuggled close to Rea, โ€œHave a
safe journey mother. Come back to us soon!โ€

Valkyrie waved to the wyvern as she took to the air and
soared towards the mountain to begin her journey.
Valkyrie began gathering insects to store for the little
wyvern who should hatch within the next few days.
Valkyrie felt excited at this prospect and couldnโ€™t wait to
meet the little dragon inside the egg.

Valkyrie took care of the cave as best as she could to help
out Rea and was sure to gather a large collection of insects
for the little wyvern to eat once hatched. She made
them in a small little pile and spent her nights curled up
next to the egg, listening to the little dragon move inside it.
She woke early on the third day to a loud crack and moved to
see a split forming on the side of the egg. She stood and
watched as the split grew until a little snout poked out of the
egg. Valkyrie watched as the little dragon opened its jaws to
push the pieces of egg apart and the top portion of the egg
cracked and crumbled away. Valkyrie looked down at the
little brown dragon as they tried to step out of their egg and
instead tumbled into the grass nest. Valkyrie nuzzled it and it
gripped onto her snout with its hands.

She lifted it up gently and moved it to her own nest before
bringing it some insects. The dragon scarfed them down
and then fell asleep, worn out from fighting its way out of
the egg. Valkyrie smiled at the little dragon and rested beside
it for a while before going out to gather more insects.
Valkyrie looked towards the sky, searching for any sign of her
mother but there was nothing.

Valkyrie waited and cared for the little wyvern for days,
growing more anxious about the whereabouts of her mother.
After about a week of her mother still not returning,
Valkyrie realized that her mother was not coming back and
looked at the little wyvern. She could see its wings were still
shriveled up from being in the egg and knew that it needed
those herbs to develop them correctly. But what could she do?
She couldnโ€™t leave the wyvern behind in order to go and get the
herbs as it was a long journey and the wyvern needed her
here to care for it. But Rea had said it was a dangerous
journey, so the wyvern may get hurt if it came with her. She
sighed and then packed up a few small things to bring with
her and then nuzzled the wyvern onto her shoulder. No
matter what happened she had to get the herbs for the
wyvern and she would protect them with her life.

She left the cave thinking about how she would
finally live up to her name; Valkyrie.

Extra Writing:

Valkyrie walked among the trees as the little wyvern nibbled
her ears. She giggled as the wyvern kept her spirits raised
even though she was absolutely terrified. She was little older
than a hatchling herself but was determined to help her
adopted sibling. She tired quickly and stopped often not used
to the distance they were traveling. Rea had said the journey
was dangerous, even for wyverns who could fly over most of
the journey, but Valkyrie knew she had to keep going.
Valkyrie wondered what sorts of dangers awaited her as she
Moved through the woods as she only had folk tales about
the woods as reference. How much of those stories were real
and how much was made up?

Valkyrie collected insects during their breaks for both of them
to snack on as they rested. She set herself up into a schedule
of breaks and moving that started to become easier to follow
but she soon found herself taking less and less breaks and
covering more distance as she proceeded through the woods.
As she began to fall into this rhythm she noticed the woods
were changing around her. The trees were getting sparse and
most of them looked blackened as she passed them. Soon
enough there were no trees and nothing but a blackened
patch of earth with boulders scattered around. Valkyrie
looked out at the patch and saw the source. A large serpent
like dragon lay in the center of the patch, sound asleep.
Surrounding the dragon were bones of all sorts of creatures
Including viscets, some even still had remnants of armor on
them. Valkyrie shushed the little wyvern, who had started
chattering nervously against her ear, and started to skirt the
edge of the clearing as quietly as she could.

The dragon stuck out its tongue like a snake, smelling the
area and its massive slitted eyes opened when it caught the
scent of the two intruders. Valkyrie froze in fear as the snake
lifted its head and turned to look at her. She backed up
towards the trees and it opened its mouth, breathing a jet of
fire right in front of her, so close that she could feel the heat
radiating within her and burning the tips of her fur. She
backed away from the fire and heard the little wyvern
whimpering afraid on her shoulder. She turned to look at the
serpent dragon and knew she couldnโ€™t outrun it, especially
after traveling the distance she had already come but all the
bones scattered around her made her realize that she didnโ€™t
have a chance at fighting it either. Her only chance was to
think her way out of the situation.

She studied the area as quickly as she could and noticed a
large section of the forest had a tangle of vines in it. She
quickly sprinted across the clearing, right near the serpent
which caught it off guard, giving her the time to clear the
distance. She dove into the vines, using her small size to
wiggle through the mess as the serpent plunged its head in
after her. She moved faster as the serpent kept coming after
her, the vines grabbing at its scales but not enough that it
would be trapped, at least not yet. She then ducked under
the serpent to try and draw it to go back into the vines and
wrap itself up more. The serpent hissed as it pushed its head
through more vines to try and catch her and she
searched for the next place that she should go to continue
jam the serpent up. The snake opened its mouth and blew a
jet of fire right past Valkyrie and she stumbled a bit. She
looked at the serpent in fear and froze at the sight of its red
eyes coming for her. The feeling of the wyvern's claws in her
shoulder brought her back and she jumped up onto the body
of the serpent just as its head crashed into the ground where
she had been standing. She climbed through more vines,
drawing the serpent to continue tying itself up as it
cris-crossed over itself in an attempt to catch her. Finally the
serpent was fully tangled and Valkyrie wrapped a vine around
its mouth to keep it from breathing fire to free itself.

With the dragon secured she took off in the direction of the
mountain knowing it wouldnโ€™t be held for very long. She
could only hope that it would be long enough for her to get a
good distance away.

Valkyrie ran for a long time in an attempt to get far enough
away that the dragon wouldnโ€™t catch up to them. She then
dropped to the ground exhausted and panting heavily. She
wrapped herself around the wyvern to protect him from the
elements as they rested on the ground for a few moments to
catch their breath. Valkyrie checked over the wyvern to make
sure that they were not injured in anyway and then picked
herself back up. She nudged the wyvern onto her shoulder to
continue on at a more reasonable pace.

They continued to walk until they came across a river and
Valkyrie decided to look for a place to spend the night before
continuing on their journey. She sank to the soft ground
under a half dead tree and nestled her way into the bark with
the little wyvern against her chest. She held them calmly as
they both drifted off to sleep. They would deal with the river
challenge in the morning.

Valkyrie and the little wyvern had been traveling for a week
now and had seen plenty of the dangers that Rea had warned
them of. Rapid rivers that they had to swim across, creatures
lurking around each turn, and at this very moment, a section
of land with nothing but hard dirt. Valkyrie kept moving even
though the sun beating on her back was making her feel
exhausted. Her paws kicked up dust which caused her to
cough and she realized just how dry her mouth was getting.
She covered her face to try and see further in the distance
but all she could see was dirt with a line of rocks in the far
distance.

She curled up against the next largest rock she found for the
shade and then put the wyvern down on the ground to
stretch their legs. Valkyrie sat against the rock and looked at
the small shape pressed against the rock for the shade.
Looking at the wyvern panting, Valkyrie knew they would not
make it much further without water. She scratched at the dirt
and wondered if she got deep enough if there would be
water. She started to dig a bit more and after she had dug
about the depth of her arm, she felt the ground get wet. She
pulled a handful of mud out and the hole filled with a small
layer of water. Valkyrie eagerly drank and then dug further to
get water for the wyvern. She helped them drink and they sat
in the shade for a few more moments, drinking the water
slowly as to not make themselves sick, and recovering their
energy. Once they had both recovered, they stood and
started their trek across the rest of the desert.

Valkyrie taught the wyvern as Rea had taught her, mostly as
they traveled through the safer portions of the journey,
passing the knowledge that Rea had shared with her. The
wyvern was curious and eager to learn and soon was helping
Valkyrie hunt insects and fish along the way. They were also
much better at detecting danger than the viscet and helped
when they were in trying to avoid creatures that stalked
them. At one point Valkyrie and the wyvern traveled in the
trees to avoid all the ground dwelling creatures they came
across.

Valkyrie told the little wyvern stories that she remembered
from her own parents and townsfolk and even some that Rea
had told her from wyvern folklore. She made up her own
tales about the monsters they had encountered and told
them about Rea, making her out to be the bravest hero of
them all.

It took two weeks for the pair to reach the mountain and now
Valkyrie had to figure out where the herbs were and how to
get to them. She began to climb the mountain and held the
little wyvern to her chest to keep it warm in the cold air that
whipped around them. About halfway up the mountain, the
weather turned for the worse and Valkyrie searched for a
place to hunker down for the coming storm. The wyvern was
the one who spotted the cave and the pair ran into it. There
was a slight bend to the cave so the wind was blocked from
entering the main cavern.

Valkyrie and the wyvern settled in for the storm and the little
dragon practiced fire breathing using tips that Valkyrie had
shared from watching Rea do it. After a little while there was
a small pile of embers on the ground that warmed the cave
and its hosts up. Valkyrie sat near the embers watching the
wyvern and wondered if it would ever be able to fly since it
hadnโ€™t gotten the herbs yet. Its wings were still wrinkled and
looked slightly deformed and Valkyrie worried about them
never being functioning. She decided to just listen to the wind
outside instead of worrying as it wouldnโ€™t do anything but
cause her to get upset. She had to keep her mind clear and
continue on for the little wyvern.

Valkyrie ended up falling asleep and when she woke, the little
wyvern was gone. She jumped up and ran out of the cave to
find it. The storm had faded but a heavy mist surrounded the
mountain and Valkyrie could hardly see a few feet in front of
her. โ€œWyvern! Where are you?โ€ She cried out as she
stumbled around the mountain.

She heard a little wyvern cry and rushed to the sound, almost
running right off a ledge. She looked around and called again,
โ€œWyvern! Where are you?โ€

A deep rumble responded and Valkyrie felt a chill in her
bones. A warm breeze came from the direction of the bellow
and blew the mist away so she could see that the ledge she
was standing on led to a small grass meadow nestled in the
ridges of the mountains. In the meadow was a massive
wyvern, almost double the size of Rea, and it was pure white.
Valkyrie looked down at the dragon and saw a small shape
playing in the grass next to it. The little wyvern noticed
Valkyrie and bounced up to call to her.

โ€œValky! Valky! Look!โ€ The little wyvern motioned to the larger
who gazed up at the viscet cautiously.

โ€œChild who is this stranger?โ€ The elder wyvern asked the little
one who meerly laughed at their tone.

โ€œThat is no stranger Elder. That is my sister!โ€ The little dragon
bounded over to Valkyrie who caught them in her arms. The
viscet carefully climbed down the ledge with the wyvern and
she approached the elder wyvern slowly.

โ€œElder? Does that mean you are the wyvern that holds the
herbs that mothers come to get for their children?โ€ Valkyrie
asked.

โ€œYes. How do you know so much?โ€ The elder seemed
confused at the viscets knowledge.

โ€œMy adoptive mother was coming here to fetch herbs for my
sibling but she never returned. I came to get them instead,โ€
Valkyrie spoke and the elder looked shocked.

โ€œThatโ€™s a dangerous journey for one so small,โ€ the elder
looked at Valkyrie and she nodded.

โ€œWhat is your name little one?โ€

โ€œMy adoptive mother called me Valkyrie,โ€ She said causing
the elder to smile.

โ€œFitting for one so brave and strong. Now come, you must be
tired and hungry.โ€

The elder led the pair to a massive cave which was filled with
shelves of herbs. Valkyrie found the smell of all the herbs to
be calming and noticed that the elder had packed the back of
the cave with soft moss to rest on. The elder motioned to a
small spot for the pair to sleep and Valkyrie settled into it
with the little wyvern.

Valkyrie woke before the little wyvern and got up to speak
with the elder, โ€œthank you for your kindness. I appreciate it,โ€
Valkyrie sat next to where the elder was grinding up some
herbs.

The elder nodded and smiled at Valkyrie, โ€œAnytime child. Now
tell me, what is the little ones name? They wouldnโ€™t say.โ€

Valkyrie sighed, โ€œI donโ€™t know. Rea said that if it was male she
would name him Strath and if female she would name her
Morrigan. But I donโ€™t know which the little wyvern is.โ€

The elder laughed softly, โ€œThe wyvern is male, my dear.โ€

Valkyrie nodded, โ€œThen Strath it is. Now you never told me,
Did Rea ever reach here?โ€

The elder looked solemn, โ€œNo child. No wyvern mothers have
been here in the past few weeks so I fear your mother was
lost along the way. It happens occasionally. I am honestly
shocked you made it this far. I have heard of stories of full
grown wyvern perishing along the journey so to have a young
viscet and hatchling succeed in the trip means that you both
must be very special.โ€
Valkyrie nodded, โ€œWe just tried to figure things out along the
way. Strath helped keep me calm and I donโ€™t know what I
would have done without him. Just knowing that he needed
those herbs guided me. Oh, the herbs! Strathโ€™s wings will
develop correctly now that he has them right?โ€

The elder nodded, โ€œYes Valkyrie, his wings will be fine. You
saved him from being grounded his whole life.โ€

Valkyrie smiled and looked back at the little wyvern, she
couldnโ€™t wait to watch him soar around in the air like his
mother.

Extra Writing 2:

Strath grew slowly as was the way of the wyverns but Valkyrie seemed to grow proportionally larger every day right in front of the
Elderโ€™s eyes. The elder had kept the two close by to help raise them and teach them as they grew and was proud of how fast
Valkyrie progressed in her teachings. Her abilities to live alongside Strath also improved. There were of course issues that arose with
any pair of siblings such as Strath lighting Valkyrieโ€™s tail on fire during an argument but they were inseparable.
Elder found the pair to be exhausting, especially in her old age, but it wasnโ€™t like she could just toss them out now could she.
Well that was her excuse but Valkyrie suspected that Elder enjoyed their company around the cave more than she admitted.
Valkyrie learned from Elder about different herbs and their medical uses. She practiced when the elder would work one on one with
Strath to develop his wyvern skills.

Valkyrie helped keep the cave orderly and gathered herbs that the elder required. The elder was glad for the help, especially as it was
getting harder to collect some of the herbs in her old age. Valkyrie also brought medical treatments to some of the other creatures
around the forest and it was declared that even the most dangerous of creatures were not to touch her, less they want to get elderโ€™s
wrath. The serpent dragon even showed up in the meadow for treatment for some nasty wounds caused by a local viscet
knight who had set out to slay him. Valkyrie enjoyed treating all the creatures and working alongside the elder but couldnโ€™t get her
mother, Rea, out of her mind. None of the creatures she had come across remembered seeing a wyvern matching Rea and there
were no clues as to where she went. Valkyrie began to wonder and worry about where her mother had gone and made up her mind
to go searching, now to just tell Elder and Strath.

โ€œElder, I would like to consult you on something,โ€ Valkyrie spoke out as she approached the wyvern.

โ€œYes, what would you like to discuss?โ€ Elder was watching Strath as he worked to light a fire for his lesson.

โ€œI am going to find out what happened to Rea. I ask if I can take some supplies with me and if you will continue to oversee Strathโ€™s
training.โ€ Valkyrie asked calmly even though her stomach was tangled in knots.

โ€œItโ€™s still much too dangerous for a young viscet to be wondering the woods,โ€ Elder looked at Valkyrie with a frown, โ€œStay here and
learn more child. Perhaps when you are more grown you may go.โ€

โ€œElder, I surely have proven my ability to travel in the woods and handle the creatures in them by now and have grown much larger
than I was then. Plus if I wait any longer all traces of her might be gone!โ€ Valkyrie looked at the elder wyvern, pleading with her
eyes to just let her go.

โ€œVery well. I will make up a pack for you to leave with in the morning,โ€ Elder looked at Valkyrie worried, still seeing the young viscet
that had shown up at her cave after journeying across the woods to save her adoptive brother.

Valkyrie smiled, โ€œThank you Elder!โ€

Strath had overheard the conversation and was now watching the two with sad eyes, โ€œYouโ€™re leaving Valk?โ€

Valkyrie went to hug the little wyvern, โ€œYes little brother. I need to go figure out what happened to mother.โ€

โ€œThen let me come Valk! I can help!โ€ Strath looked up at the viscet.

โ€œStrath, you have to stay here and learn. Elder will watch over you until I return. I promise that I will return soon.โ€ Valkyrie
nuzzled the small dragon whose claws gripped onto her fur.

โ€œNoโ€ฆ. please Valk. Please bring me with you. I wanna stay with you. Please sister. Please bring meโ€ฆ.โ€ Strath began to cry into the
viscets fur and Valkyrie looked at the elder sadly.

โ€œStrath, you need to stay here to learn from elder. Donโ€™t you wanna learn how to fly and breathe fire?โ€ Valkyrie looked back down
at the little dragon, โ€œBesides the journey may be dangerous and I do not want you to get hurt. You are still so young.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to learn any of it if you wonโ€™t be here. And I can help protect you Valkyrie,โ€ He pouted and she sighed, how could she
convince him to stay?

She decided not to say anything else on the matter and rather helped the elder prepare dinner. The trio sat around a glowing patch
of embers that night in silence. Strath remained pressed up against Valkyrie as Elder prepared some supplies for Valkyrie to take
with her on her journey. Valkyrie curled up to sleep with Strath once it started to get late and thanked Elder for caring for them
both for this long. The elder said nothing but blew a soft breeze of warm air over the two sleepy forms.

Valkyrie was awake by the time the sun rose and looked back at the sleeping form of her brother. She decided not to wake him
and left the cave to find Elder sitting outside. Elder looked at the little viscet and gave her the pack of supplies she had put
together. Valkyrie hugged the elder and looked back at the cave where her brother slept before heading off into the woods.

Elder watched the small shape vanish into the woods, โ€œMay the valkyries, or whatever guardians there are, watch over you.โ€

She then watched a tiny shape bolt from the cave and into the woods after the viscet, โ€œStrath! No! Come back!โ€

Valkyrie heard the elderโ€™s cries and turned to see Strath running after her, โ€œValk!โ€

Valkyrie scooped up the little dragon who was crying heavily and listened to him blubber, โ€œWhere you go, I go sisterโ€ฆโ€

She realized now that she wasnโ€™t going to be able to leave him behind. He had been the reason she had made it the long distance to
find the elder after all. She gave in and sighed, โ€œFineโ€ฆ You can come.โ€

Strath looked shocked and then bounced excitedly, hovering in the air slightly before drifting back onto her shoulder. Valkyrie
waved to Elder to let her know it was ok and then went to start on her journey again, Strath leapt from her shoulder and glided
through the air to catch a tree branch. Valkyrie watched him with a smile, her little brother was flying, and while it may not have
been much more than a glide it was at least a start.

The pair set out to find out what had happened to their mother, together.
