prompt: Ovani's favorite place is most definitely the arcade in his little town . He'd been considered an outcast his entire life , and none of the kits his age really wanted to befriend him , so one day while wandering around the town , he stumbled upon the arcade . He felt an odd kind of nostalgia , which was odd considering it was only the 80s and he'd never been elsewhere , nor was he old at all . Anyhow , Ovani spends majority of his day in the arcade .

name: Shio

"Oh, not you again. Scram!" Said the bar owner, nudging him away with his broom. He glared at the kit who scampered out the door, then continued his sweeping. A few heads turned from their drinks and chuckled.

Shio smirked with delight. Though getting kicked out of the tavern was an inconvenience, he admittedly enjoyed getting in trouble. He strode off, digging in his pocket and pulling out a pack of gum he had swiped from the corner store last week. He popped a stick in his mouth and grinned. Things tasted better when they were stolen.

He wandered around the town for a while and came home after dark, despite his mother's threats of punishment. He didn't care all that much about silly things like that.

Home was boring. There was nothing to do, and no new ways to disobey his parents. His only entertainment was watching his ant colony in the thin glass terrarium. Time crawled as slowly as the ants. He shut off his light and stared out the window. He opened it to get a clearer view of the stars and a breath of fresh air. He fell asleep counting the stars in Ursa Major.

---

The next day he was back at the bar. First, he snuck into the alley that the back door led out to. He jammed a stick as far as he could between the crack in the door, then waited until an employee opened it to carry out a box of bottles to a delivery van. When the door opened, the stick fell into place, and held it open ever so slightly. Not enough to notice, but just enough to keep the lock from clicking in place.
When the coast was clear he crept inside. Then, he casually strut inside the bar like he owned the place, and sat in a big comfy lounge chair by a luscious green pool table.

He felt a stern tap on his shoulder.
"Out. Now." The bar owner towered over him.
Shio looked up with his big eyes.
"Please, sir. I won't do no harm. They don't have pool tables in the arcade, and I've always wanted to play. You know I don't come here for the bad stuff, Frank." Shio cooed softly, innocently.
Frank lifted an eyebrow. It was strange to hear the kit say his name so casually.
But it was a small town, and everybody knew everybody. Hell, he knew the kid pretty well too. Shio tried to sneak in almost every day.
Yes, a small town. The bar owner knew everyone well. He knew the men who bickered when they drank, the women who stressed over their livelihoods, and vice versa. Small town indeed. Even the sheriff, Frank knew on a personal level.
Surely the sheriff wouldn't mind. It was against Frank's morals to ever allow the kid to do anything more than watch the adults play pool. Sheriff knew that, sheriff trusted him. Whether this was a good environment for a kit, he didn't know. But Frank knew everyone. He knew how Shio loved to get into trouble. And if Shio was inside, he was safe from all the mischief he'd get in otherwise. Besides, Frank didn't mind keeping an eye on him. His mother sometimes needed a break from the heartache he brought her, and plus, Frank was tired of hearing the ramblings of adults who mulled over their bills and spouses, complaining, moaning, groaning, and stuttering for another drink. The innocence of a child might keep him sane.

"Okay," grunted Frank, "but any funny business and you're out." He warned.
Shio nodded and thanked him, then asked if he could join the adults playing pool.
Frank squinted. "You're really pushing it, aren't you." He chuckled, then patted him on the shoulder and shrugged. "You ought to ask them," Frank waved a hand towards three large Kalons surrounding the pool table.
Shio pushed himself out of the big lounge chair and pranced up to the first Kalon, who was chalking his pool cue while awaiting his turn.
He tugged on his shirt and looked up at the face that looked down on him with a confused look.
"Sir? May I join your game?" He asked. Shio was not usually so polite, but he knew how to get what he wanted, the same way he had with the tavern owner.
The Kalon threw a glance to Frank, who nodded approval. Though confused as to why a kit could possibly be allowed in the bar, he shook it off and let the kit join them. They needed another player to even out the teams and have a proper game, anyway.

The Kalons helped him hold the cue, taught him to crouch over his cue and get his eye real close to visualize where the ball would hit the others. He had a few mishaps, even nearly tore up the velvet green carpet. But the Kalons covered for him, told Frank it wasn't Shio. The green was fine anyway. But they told him to keep his cue tilted higher.

They had to admit, they felt bad for the kit. Everyone knew everyone, and these Kalons knew Shio. They knew this kit didn't have many friends. If being in the bar kept him out of trouble, so be it.
The adults were able to reason it out. It wasn't much of a bar, anyway. Most Kalons grabbed a beer to watch the football game, while others played pool in the back. It wasn't loud. It wasn't rowdy. There was a different place in town for the more unruly drinkers. Here, the Kalons chatted to the bartender, laughed over drunk stories, and cheered over the football game. These Kalons were parents themselves. They were responsible, and unwilling to allow Shio to do anything more than watch or play pool. If anything, Shio had better role models inside the tavern, who passed on their wisdom to him as he was seen as a fresh, new generation. Meanwhile, kids his age were outside throwing rocks at trucks and throwing sticks in pretend warfare, theatrically demonstrating every casualty with grotesque detail.

It wasn't long before Shio was turning heads as kalons sipped their drinks and gave him tips on how to get the balls to go where he wanted.
A dingle of the bell knocked by the opening door was a regular sound, but the character entering the tavern was not. It was the sheriff.
" 'Ello Sheriff. What can I get you?" Asked Frank as he wiped a glass.
The Sheriff pulled up his belt and tucked in his shirt better. He smiled to Frank and asked for a coke.
He sat down and watched the small TV for a moment. Then he noticed Shio, eyeing his target and striking the balls with his cue. Stripes scattered and one plunked into a hole, and Shio jumped up with a cheer.
the Sheriff turned back towards Frank.
Frank started, "Oh, he's just playing--"
"No need, Frank." Sheriff cut him off with a nod and a wave of his hand. "I know this boy. See him every other night. I'd rather he stay inside, outta trouble. His mother's heart wouldn't be able to take it if he got caught shoplifting again."
Frank smiled softly and handed the Sheriff his drink.
Sheriff took a long sip before telling Frank, "But I'd be careful around Officer Brooks. He won't be so lenient."
Frank nodded, he understood. Sheriff finished his break and stepped out into the streets again, door chiming behind him.

The day continued as normal. Shio was a surprisingly fast learner.
"You know," mumbled a kalon through bites of nachos, "You'd be a pro if you put your mind to it, and don't waste your time with petty crimes."
Shio shot him a look. He wasn't happy with how the kalon commented on his supposedly well-known scandals. But he mellowed out and relaxed. It was a compliment, and Shio was quite proud of his newly acquired skill, so for someone to notice was a pleasant surprise.
It was all fun and games before the bells at the door chimed again, and heavy set boots stomped inside. Shio didn't pay attention until he heard the wary voice of Frank say, "Why, hello Officer Brooks. Nice day isn't it?"
"Cut the small talk." Huffed Brooks. "Where is he?"
"Who?" Frank played dumb.
"Ah, there he is." Officer Brooks stomped towards the pool table.
"So, the rumors are true then? A kit in a bar? What's wrong with you, Frank?" Brooks glared at the bartender, who averted his eyes and pretended to be busy cleaning glasses.
"Alright boy, out. March." Brooks boomed. He was an intimidating kalon.
Shio looked up with big eyes, but he saw his innocence wouldn't save him this time.
"Oh come on Brooks, he's just here to play pool. He's better off here than being a delinquent. You know that!" A kalon chimed in.
Shio tried to hide his hurt. He realized everyone thought he was a bad kid. Then he realized he actually was a bad kid. A regular Saturday night meant swiping a candy bar and sneaking into a movie theatre. He was a bad kid. He got in trouble. And every night, when his mother stood by the door worrying about him, waiting for him to come home, hoping he wasn't hurt...
He was a bad kid.
Shio bit back his emotions and tried to stand tall. He would change. As silly as it sounded, pool gave him purpose. It was something he was good at. Sure, he was good at stuffing trinkets in his sleeves and creeping through otherwise locked doors, but he was also good at this. And it made him feel special.
But that didn't matter to Brooks. Brooks barked to the kalon that dare stand up to him, "Hush now, else you'll be in cuffs."
The kalon sealed his lips. He knew better than to speak up and question why.

Brooks escorted Shio out the door with both hands on his shoulders as if he was a hardcore criminal. He dropped the pool cue pitifully and waved goodbye to the friends he had made, and felt betrayed at their hesitance to stand up for him. But no one wanted to mess with Brooks.

Shio didn't want to run from the cop, he didn't want to get in any more trouble. But as they walked to the cop car, he decided he had to, just one last time. One last time he would be a bad kid.
As Brooks held one firm hand on his shoulder and used the other to open the back door, Shio bolted. Brooks shouted a "HEY!" at him but didn't bother chasing the kit. It wasn't worth it. Who cares about one kid anyway, he'd get what's coming to him at home any way. News spread quickly around town.

Shio ran home and slammed his bedroom door shut, burying his face in his pillow. He didn't want his mother to know. Suddenly he felt bad for all his wrongdoings. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his pack of stolen gum. He opened the window and chucked it as hard as he could, letting out his anger and frustration on the launch, and it plummeted into the bushes behind his house.

A soft knock appeared at his door, and it creaked open. His mom stepped inside.
"Shio?" She said softly, and sat on the bed next to him. She rubbed his back as he squeezed the pillow.
"I know what happened. Frank told me. Don't worry, I'm not upset."

They talked a little and Shio got a lot of grief off of his shoulders. He let out secrets he kept locked away, even shed a few tears but wiped them quickly away. His mother pretended not to notice, she knew he liked to act tough. She chuckled softly.

---

The next morning, Shio didn't know what to do, or where to go. There was nothing to do anymore. The arcade had mostly 'out of order' games and the ones that worked had pizza grease on the buttons and fingerprints on the screens. Walking down the street, he saw the neighborhood kids jamming dirt into locks, making it difficult for keys to slide in, leaving shops closed with shopkeepers sweating, desperately trying to open the doors.

He didn't want to join them. He didn't feel like doing that kind of stuff anymore. He promised himself to at least try to better himself. He kicked a tiny pebble along the sidewalk as he wandered through town. He felt angry that Brooks took away his new found happiness. He didn't even want to look at the bar as he walked past it, he didn't want to feel any worse than he already did.
But he couldn't help himself. He glanced up to see the bar sign. But, it wasn't a bar sign. Instead it said "Pool Hall". A new sign, but everything else was the same. The "open" sign was the same, the welcome mat was the same, and when he peering through the windows, everything inside was the same.
He dared to swing open the door and step inside.
"Ah, Shio! There you are! You came just in time, it's the grand opening of my pool hall!" Frank beamed with joy.
"But... the tavern?" Asked Shio, confused.
"No no no," Frank shook his head, "The bar is no more. It's a pool hall. And kids are allowed in pool halls." Frank gave him a wink.
A burst of happiness flowered in Shio's chest. Frank had done all this just for him. and though everything looked the same, the most important thing had changed. It was a pool hall now.

Shio rejoined the friends he had made in a game of pool, and everyone welcomed him with a smile. It lasted a long time, until around noon when Brooks swung open the door.
"What's this?" He growled, glaring at Frank.
"Welcome Officer Brooks! Care for a round of pool? I've given up the bar business and opened a new pool hall!" He grinned.
Kalons sipping beers turned away from the football game to snicker at Brooks.
Brooks turned red with anger. "Well we'll see about that! Where's the boy? I'm taking him to a cell this time!"
"For what?" Frank spat back. "For playing pool in a pool hall?"
Brooks stumbled over his words, and couldn't seem to come up with a reasonable sentence. He shot Frank a dirty look, warned Shio to behave himself, and stormed out the door.
A cheer rang out in a chorus as the door swung closed behind Brooks. Many patted Shio on the back, and shook Frank's hand.
Here, Shio felt happy. A pool hall where he discovered his unexpected skill. Here, he could stay out of harm's way, under the sign of a pool hall. No body could get him in trouble, not even himself.

Life at home improved too. His family found happiness knowing he was finished with his old lifestyle of getting himself into trouble. Shio even entered competitions, and got close to winning The Amateur's Ball in the next town over. He spend most of his time in the pool hall, clacking the orbs, watching them plunk into holes, jumping up with a proud cheer each time. He'd never felt so happy. It was the best place in the world!
