shane silently picked up a cloth from the table he had just finished washing, before going onto the next. he was a simple waiter for a local diner in his town, and he always offered to stay for after hours. he hummed to himself in the ghost-town like diner, the sun completely vanished below the clouds at the horizon. all that he used for his light was a small lantern he brought with him, as his boss wouldn't let him use the electricity in the diner. it was really all he needed, so he didn't mind it much.

as he finished wiping down all the tables, he set away his cleaning supplies. he was glad to have it done with, but he didn't care too much that he had to spend the extra hour cleaning. as he grabbed his stuff, he heard a faint meow from outside the diner kitchen. he quickly put his stuff in his backpack, before hurrying to the back door. he slipped out of the door, before locking it once he was in the alley.

he smiled down at a family of four cats. a momma and her three kittens. the momma was a pretty white queen. the biggest kit was a white cat like her, one a calico, and the other a orange tabby. he pulled the cat food out of his backpack, pouring some onto the ground for the family to nibble on. it was the highlight of his day, and it was what he stayed at the diner for for the extra few hours. he loved the cats; they were his only family, truly.

✦ nighttime activities: usually finn is very, very restless at night, so he tries his best to help himself relax. he'll have a bunch of scented candles alight, filling the air with a variety of calming scents. finn will surround himself with a large heap of warm, fluffy blankets and pillows, and he'll listen to soft sounds, like birdsong or ocean waves. he'll relax in his pillow fort for a couple hours, reading and writing until eventually, he goes to sleep.

adal usually spends his evenings at home in his backyard. he absolutely loves grabbing a blanket & an iced tea and sitting in the yard watching the sunset. after the sun has set, he typically looks for constellations or a shooting star. once he has found at least one good constellation, adal heads inside to curl in bed. he likes to go to sleep at a decent hour, but before adal can rest he needs to let his thoughts loose. so he'll usually write in his journal after reading yesterdays entry. just one page is enough, adal has a way of working with words so he doesn't use so many, but is able to deliver what he needed to in that little entry.

NIGHTTIME ACTIVITIES: Joey usually sleeps deep until about midnight, were he wakes up because he is a night Komo and talks a run, sometimes hunting. When he gets back to his sleeping area, he piles on to a bunch of pillows and reads. He sleeps lightly when he falls asleep again, due to slight restlessness.

charlie loves the creatures that come out in the dead of night. he often finds himself exploring forests or the banks of rivers at the latest hours possible. he enjoys keeping jars of bugs or small unique nocturnal creatures he finds and setting them free in the morning. he doesn’t care what it is, from a small beetle to a distanced wolf, any creature he can find will get him excited. he carries a flashlight with him to follow the trails left behind by animals. if he finds an owl feather, he’ll search for more until he stumbles upon the owner of the feathers. he’ll sit and admire them. occasionally he’ll take pictures of what he finds, careful to be quiet and keep the lighting low. you often can’t make out what’s in the pictures, but charlie doesn’t need to. just knowing that he saw them brings him all the satisfaction he needs.

I liked that they enjoyed exploring the forest at night, searching for an animal who has gone on a journey. Or one that has left something behind.

Now,
The winners story was just so lovely. I’m a sucker for characters that work at diners or coffee shops, bakery even. I don’t know why, I just really love that idea. I also liked that he would stay after hours just to feed a tiny family of cats!
