The waterfall made a loud, roaring noise next to Silentstep as she climbed the side of it. Funnily enough, next to the waterfall, there were rocks lined up almost like stairs. Of course, there were on this one. Why not on the one that she had encountered earlier, with CloudLeap. Cloud had fallen into the waterfall. Thinking about it Silent realized that it actually hadn't happened far away from here. Just on the other side of the mountains. Silent stopped for a bit to look at the waterfall. ShadowStar, the leader of this clan, stopped when she noticed that Silent was no longer following here and quietly went to join the other cat's side. She quietly looked at the river but then spoke up "I am so sorry... that you lost your mate I mean. She sounded like she was very kind." Silentstep looked at Shadow at the mention of her mate. Former mate. "she was." Silent paused for a bit "She was the best cat I ever met, really." a grim smile spread across her face as Silent went on "I'll miss her but hopefully she is in a better place now." Silent then stood up, starting to climb the 'stairs' again.

The old cat stretched himself out beneath a tussock of grass, still warm from the last drops of evening sun.

Nearby, the majority of Songclan was sitting in the lee of the high earthen cliff, listening with varying degrees of interest to Wildeyes story.

He knew it wouldn't be long before the younger ones lost interest. Though the Epic of Fire was a historically rich tale, it included several long lists of long dead clan cats and Wildeyes insisted that the recitation of the lists was important to the stories.

Most of the older cats agreed and sat patiently, waiting for the story to resume.

Most of the younger cats disagreed and wandered off, looking for another storyteller who would give them a more frivolous tale.

A group of such cats came bounding towards him, mostly kits with a few young apprentices sent to accompany their younger siblings.

Otterkit headed the group and Greyflight groaned as he realized the boy was leading them directly towards him.

He liked Otterkit, the little cat was respectful of his elders while at the same time willing to sponge up everything they said, but the same could not be said for the rest of the rambunctious children.

"Greyflight-" Otterkit began, as he trotted up.

"Story!" Exclaimed a small she-kit, knocking into Otterkit "We want a story!"

Greyflight sat up and sniffed "Well, that's no way to ask, is it, little one?"

"Greyflight, may we please have a story?" Otterkit finished what he'd began before being knocked over.

The old cat flicked his tale and glared at the small group "And what's wrong with Wildeyes' story, hmm?"

"It's boring," piped up an apprentice from the back "All she's doing is reciting names."

"It might do you good to learn the names of those who came before you," Greyflight retorted "Maybe someday that's all anybody'll remember of you. Your name in a list."

"Please, Greyflight?" Otterkit said, eyes begging "Just a short one?"

Greyflight sighed, then with a languid movment caught one of the lazily flickering fireflies and instantly the kits went silent.

For when a cat held a firefly between his claws, he had the right of silence until either the story was finished or the firefly escaped.

"Alright, I'll give you a short one," He settled back down into the grass and the rest of them sat, eyes fixed on his face, lit by the golden light of the bug.

"I want the one where Fisheyes-"
A young kit started, then remembered the rules, aided by a fierce glare from the elder.

Then, after a few seconds of silence to ensure he wouldn't be interrupted again, he started on the story, a faint twinkle in his eyes but his voice low and serious.

"Once, there was a tall gray cat who lived in the sea and spoke to the creatures in the waves. His name was Fisheyes-"
The kit who had requested a Fisheyes story squeaked-
"And he was the most cunning and the most kind of all cats ever to exsist...."

He was also the only cat ever to love the water. He breathed it like a fish and could travel to anywhere in the world he wished with a tail like an otter. Thusly, he could get into many times the trouble than any other cat.

One day Fisheyes was swimming near a beach when two seagulls flew close overhead and started shouting at him.

He lifted his head out of the water to ask them what was wrong, for Fisheyes could speak to birds as well as sea creatures, and right away the two seagulls dove and plucked his eyes right out of his head.

Without his eyes, Fisheyes is not only blind, but he cannot breathe underwater anymore, so quickly he found his way up onto the beach where his old friend, Singinghawk, the only cat ever born with wings, was waiting for him.

"Fisheyes, Fisheyes," he cried "I was coming to warn you, but I see I am too late!"

"Singinghawk?" Poor Fisheyes called "Warn me of what?"

"The Great White Owl of the southern mountains has sent every bird out to steal your eyes for he wishes to be able to swim as you do."

"Well he has succeeded!" Fisheyes said, sitting down as he was afraid of walking back into the sea "Certainly he has them by now."

"I'm afraid you must be right," said Singinghawk sadly "And he is guarded by every owl that flies."

He flew down and sat next to his friend, wondering what he could do to help him, but Fisheyes' quick mind was already schemeing.

"Now listen," said Fisheyes, tapping his otter tail "The Great White Owl wants eyes that can make his soft feathers immune to water? I'm certain that he should also want to be immune to fire as well."

Singinghawk laughed dryly "And feathermites and old age I suppose, but what of that?"

Fisheyes stood up smiling "Singinghawk, do you know whither the Great White Owl make his home?"

"Of course, he's chased me off many times, but why? Certainly you don't already have a plan to get your eyes back?"
"I certainly do, but I shall need your help."

Singinghawk, who felt bad that he hadn't been in time to warn his friend, agreed immediately to aid Fisheyes.

"First, find me two round stones that are exactly the same, you must do it as I cannot see anything."

Mystified, Singinghawk did as he was asked, bringing two round black stones to Fisheyes.

"But what are you going to do with these?" He asked, putting them at Fisheyes feet.

"Watch," Fisheyes said, picking up the stones and putting them in where his eyes had been.

"They're too big," Singinghawk said "And they don't look much like eyes."

"They'll do," Fisheyes said "Now, guide me to the Great White Owl's tree, but as soon as we get there you must hide yourself or they will suspect a trick."

So, Singinghawk guided Fisheyes deep into the forest, until they came to the great tree where many owls slept.

"It's growing dark," Singinghawk whispered in his friend's ear "They'll be waking soon."

"Perfect, now I must go on ahead alone, but keep close and hidden friend!" And Fisheyes crept forwards alone, using his whiskers to feel his way.

He had no idea what was around exepct for the ground beneath his feet and suddenly there was a great screech and a voice high above him cried out imperiously "Stop, cat! You have no business here amongst the owls."

"Oh but I do," Fisheyes tilted his head upwards to seem as though he was looking up at the owl "I've come to thank the Great Owl."

"Thank him? For what?" Came the confused replied.

"Why, for taking my eyes of course! For if he had not taken those old useless ones I surely would never have found these wonderful new ones!"

"What?" Screeched another voice, for, without Fisheyes knowing it, the Great White Owl himself had been watching and listening and now he came flying down out of the tree to land in front of Fisheyes "What do you mean wonderful new eyes?"

Fisheyes dipped his head respectfully "You must be the Great White Owl."
"I am and I demand to know why your new eyes are so much better than the old ones!"
"You mean the ones you stole? Well after they'd been stolen from me I sank to the bottom of the sea for I cannot swim without my eyes and there a great clam took pity on me and bestowed his two pearls on me as gifts. These new eyes not only allow me to breathe water but they make me immune to fire, disease, and the effects of time. These eyes are so much better and I never would have gotten them if you had not stolen my old eyes."

"And what's to stop me from taking these new eyes?" The Great White Owl asked angrily, for now he felt tricked, as if it was Fisheyes who had wronged him rather than he who had wronged Fisheyes.

Fisheyes recoiled as if horrified "These are magical eyes Oh Great White Owl and they where made for me alone, they could never work for you. "
"Oh is that so?" And the Great White Owl snatched the two black stones out of Fisheyes face and dropped the two real eyes onto the ground.

Quickly Fisheyes snatched up his eyes and put them back into his just as the Great White Owl realized he could see nothing
"I'VE BEEN TRICKED!" He screeched, flailing wildly about, searching for Fisheyes.

But the quick cat had already gotten out of the way "I didn't trick you!" He called over his shoulder "Those eyes won't ever work for you or anyone else for they've turned to stone inside your head!"

And that kits is why the white owls of the forest have black eyes instead of yellow, like other owls."

"Another!" Called Otterkit, a second too late as Greyflight quickly released the firefly as soon as the story was over.

"No," the old cat said, curling up and tucking his tail across his nose "Run back to your parents now."

There were several unhappy mumblings, but the kits did as they were told and dispersed.

Greyflight laughed to himself as he dropped off to sleep.
Little did the children know it, but they were participating in a much older tradition than firefly stories, one where young overexcited kits pestered crotchety elders. It was one he had participated when he was younger and one he was still active in, now just on the other side.

"Time Spent In Eagle's Shadow"

Every apprentice must spend a day and a night on Eagle's crag. During this time they must fast, they must not eat any prey, not that there is much too be found there. Perhaps a snake or two. This is to prove they will last as warriors. They must stay on the dark side during the day.

Two apprentices cannot spend the same night and day there. They must last alone. When night comes, at twilight, they must go into the moon crack and dream with StarClan - but only while twilight lasts. They may enter the crack before twilight but may only shut their eyes when the time comes. StarClan warriors will tell them when their time is up. Then they must go outside and sleep at the top of the crack through the entire night, under the open sky.

Then WaveClan's leader will come and give them their warrior name at dawn. The clan must not know the name until the cat has eaten and rested as much as they wish to, then the leader will announce it.

PART ONE

Kestrelpaw knew that was what happened after his assessment - it was the final test.
But he never knew what it would be like.

He shivered, the shadowed side of the crag was cold and dark. He heard his belly groan but silenced it with a flick of his tail.
No. He would become a warrior. He gazed up at the sky, it was not strewn with stars yet, it would not be for a while.
The day had hardly begun, or so it felt. He sighed with the thought of lasting like this for the rest of the day- and the night.

The sky was full of fluffy clouds and he started to daydream. I wonder what my warrior name will be... I hope it's something neat like Kestrelskip or Kestrelheart... He shook himself back to the time now, not at dawn the next day. He wished it was the time when Leapardstar would come to meet him now, he was already tired of waiting. He got up and paced the dusty ground, knocking a stone around from time to time. He hit his paw against a large stone sticking out of the ground, almost a miniature version of Eagle's Crag. He yelped in pain and then sat down to nurse his sore paw. For a moment he wished he was a medicine cat apprentice,
then he would be able to soothe it using herbs - and best of all, he wouldn't be here. Don't think that! He shook his head to clear it of the bad thoughts.

He lay down on his side, sighing. His stomach rumbled again and he groaned. His paw stinging, he started rolling in the dust,
then sitting up again to groom himself clean. He knew this way pointless and a waste of time, but he was bored! He looked to see where the sun was and realized it was already at the point of Eagle's Crag. Midday? So soon? True, it had already been kind of late when he set out, but time had flown! He padded to the base of the rock and curled up in a hollow.

---

PART TWO
Kestrelpaw squeezed into the crack, relieved to see it was much wider inside. He was a large tom despite only being at the end of his apprenticeship. He sat by the largest crystal watching the sunset. Twilight was coming.

He blinked, and suddenly the sky was full of a purple glow. Twilight!

Quickly, he settled himself by the crystal and closed his eyes...

"Welcome." A voice sounded and he opened his eyes. He was in a sea of mist.

"Is this StarClan's fishing grounds?" he gasped, and his eyes opened wide as the cat in front of him nodded. "W-who are you?"

"You, are Kestrelpaw." The cat started fading.

"No - what - am I supposed to know you?" Kestrelpaw babbled.

After the mysterious cat had gone, a new form appeared. Kestrelpaw eyed them warily, then was relieved when he recognized Flame. "Mother!" he darted forward to nuzzle the old loner. Her starry fur glittered and he purred as he rubbed herself against her.

Flame ran her glittery tail over his shoulders, and he found it odd that he could feel it. He had always thought that StarClan residents were ghost-like and shady, but although he could see through Flame, her body seemed completely solid.

"I love you," she murmured into his ear. "But you must go now... Twilight is ending."

Indeed, as Kestrelpaw woke up he saw it was no longer purple but that it was evening.

PART THREE

Kestrelpaw scrambled onto the largest boulder at the bottom of Eagle's Crag. He crouched down low, his muscles tight as a spring.
He released and bounced straight up onto the closest ledge. He rested for a moment, purring with satisfaction at his jump.
He had always been good at leaping and jumping. His mother had said that his father had been related to some sort of other group... another clan, SkyClan, he thought it was. He clambered up the last few lumps in the crag and round that it was soft and sandy on top. He raced along to the tip, stopping jerkily and wobbling for a moment but then he regained his balance. Looking over he almost felt sick and he was suddenly even more hungry. He lay down on the soft sandy area at the tip of the cliff, glad for the ridgy bit that went he wouldn't fall off. He was surprised he felt so dizzy when he was supposed to have SkyClan blood.

Slowly, his eyes started closing...

PART FOUR

"Kestrelpaw! KESTRELPAW!"

Kestrelpaw woke up to see a large, spotted tabby she-cat standing over him- Leapardstar. He stumbled up, feeling a pang of worry as he realized he still seemed to be only an apprentice beside her. But he had always been rather small...

"Kestrelpaw... It's time for your ceremony."

Kestrelpaw nodded, gazing out at the horizon. The sun was just rising and it looked beautiful. "Okay."

"Kestrelpaw. Do you promise to be true to your clan and follow the code of clantime until the end of your days in both this realm and the realm of starry warriors?"

Kestrelpaw gazed out at the sky for a moment longer before turning his head up to the leader. "I do."

"Them by the powers of the starry warriors, I give you your warrior name. Kestrelpaw, from this moment onward you will be known as Kestrelsnow for your silky white fur. The starry warriors honour your forethought and gentleness." Leapardstar dipped her head and touched her nose to Kestrelsnow's head. "Now let's head back to camp so you can eat."

Kestrelsnow blinked and nodded, padding after the spotted leader.

prompt:

The only thing Frostpaw could truly hear and focus on, was the beating sound of his heart. Rapidly thudding against his chest, as he tried to remain calm. There were three other apprentices alongside him. All four sitting in a line, in front of their leaders den. Sat at the paws of each young cat, was a feather. The full moon above them, provided them enough light to see what species of bird their feather belonged to. Frostpaw's feather belonged to a crow. Due to the fact that it was black, and had a slight glossy shine to it. However, he was too busy keeping his nerves in check, to be able to focus on what types of feathers his fellow apprentices had. It didn't help that all of the attention was focused on them. As if it were a thousand eyes surrounding him. Judging him. Which was why he nearly jumped out of his skin, when his leader finally decided to speak.

" I have gathered you all tonight, so that these young cats may prove their worth as warriors, by proving themselves within the 'Warrior of the night' trial, yes, it requires some skill to be able to safely navigate throughout our territory, but it takes a whole other level to be able to move about during the night, especially with the dangers that lay hidden within the shadows, before each of these apprentices lays a single feather, one that is hidden throughout our territory, I have requested of those who have hid these objects to not place them in any dangerous areas, for I do not wish to risk these young cats lives", Dawnstar said. Glancing down at the four young cats warily, as she wrapped her tail around her paws. The moon above, giving her a slight ominous look, as her pale green eyes watched them carefully." Apprentices, analyse your feathers and take in their details, for not one feather is like the other, this is to prevent you from cheating and grabbing someone else's feather, those who have hid them, have left their scent on your respective feathers, your skills will be required to follow the scent trail and to navigate your way to where they are hidden, for it is important to be able to fight within the darkness itself, but beware, for predators will not hesitate to attack an innocent cat, so be careful on where you tread, once you've collected your feather and returned safely, you will be welcomed as a full warrior of the night within your clan", she added.

Frostpaw gulped silently, as he flattened his ears against his head. Before looking down at the feather in front of him. Taking a deep breath, he carefully took in its scent. Once he was certain on who it was who hid his feather, he then turned around and sprinted out of camp. Faintly hearing the cries of his clanmates wishing both him and his fellow apprentices luck, as they left the safety of their camp behind them. It wasn't long till the mostly white tom found himself alone. Standing out like a sour thumb. Due to his mostly white fur, that shone like the moon itself when out in the open. Making it difficult for him to blend into the shadows. Once or twice he jumped a little, from the hoot of an owl or the snap of a twig. His nerves starting to get the better of him, as he shakily followed the faint scent trail. Stopping every so often to check his surroundings. Sniffing the air, to make sure he wasn't crossing paths with something unpleasant.

At one point, he narrowly avoided bumping into a fox. Not realising it was there, due to the moon being blocked by a cloud. Luckily he had caught its scent in time. Allowing him to quickly hide within a berry bush, that helped hide his scent from the larger predator. He only released his breath, once he saw the bushy red tail disappear in the distance. Mentally scolding himself for being so careless. Considering that the aim of the trial was to not just rely on the light of the moon. But to also rely on ones own eyesight. At the moment, he could barely see a whiskers length in front of him. But as he continued to follow the trail, he began to see things a little more clearly. Allowing him to pick out the best areas to step, and to avoid areas that were too dark for him to see properly. Which were often good calls, since he could of sworn he saw movement in one or two bushes.

As his vision continued to become clearer, his own confidence began to grow. Ears moving forwards, as he picked up the pace. Until he went into a light sprint. Swerving in between the trees, as he did his best to keep hold of the scent trail. At times he would lose it, due to either some areas being overlapped with too many scents or going the wrong way. Mainly because the owner of the scent, had made sure to go several different ways in order to confuse the young apprentice. Only for him to be able to find it again, after spotting claw marks on a fallen log or paw prints within muddy ground. Creating a small sort of excitement within him, as he quickly followed after it. His fears slowly evaporating, the closer he grew to his destination. If fact, if one were to see him from a distance, they would have mistaken him for a ghost. Due to the fact that his paws barely made a noise.

His ears pricked up once more, at the sound of rushing water. Announcing that he had came to the edge of the river. Glancing at the shimmering surface of the water, Frostpaw once more became uncertain. As he cast a glance at the opposite side. Not quite sure if he would be able to make the jump without falling in. However, that wasn't the only thing that made him uncertain. It was the fact that the scent trail had gone cold. Causing the young tom to have to come to a decision, in order to continue forwards. Either risk the jump, or continue to explore his side of the river. It didn't help that the night had become eerily quite. Making him realise just how alone and vulnerable he truly was. While he was no longer afraid of the dark. Due to his eyesight treating it as if the sun was still out. He was starting to feel as if he was being watched. Causing his fur to start to stand on end. Nearly releasing a screech when a frog hopped into his line of sight out of nowhere. It took a few deep breaths to be able to regain control of his emotions, as he once more gave a cautious glance at the other side of the river.

Just as he was about to try to make the jump, the wind picked up once more. Giving him the chance to pick up a familiar scent. One that did not lead over the river as he expected, but instead up the tree that stood nearby. Glancing upwards, he couldn't see anything at first. Until a small movement caught his eye. A small black dot, that was a darker shade than the leaves it was hidden within. Slightly narrowing his pupils. Frostpaw carefully and skilfully made his way upwards. Carefully picking out branches that would hold his weight, as he drew nearer to the object. Nearly crying out in joy when he saw his feather, as he made his way swiftly along the thin branch. Barely managing to catch it in time, as it broke loose from its hiding place. Once he was certain he had a firm hold of it. He then made his way back down. Agilely jumping from one branch to another until he was safely back on solid ground.

A warm chuckle behind him made him turn around. Only to be met with his mentors amber eyes." Well done", the older tom said. His dark coloured fur blending in with his surroundings. Which explained on why he felt as if he was being watched. Upon seeing the younger cats confusion, he simply shook his head in amusement."You didn't honestly think that Dawnstar would allow you to go by yourself without some form of protection, did you?", he asked. To which the younger cat simply smiled shyly in return. Relief flooding through his eyes, upon seeing the older tom.

Once back at camp, Frostpaw stepped forwards to place his feather down in front of his leader. Keeping his head bowed, as she lifted her gaze towards the rest of the camp. He had been the last to arrive, due to his feather being further out than anyone else. But even he was surprised, to learn that his eyesight was slightly better than those of the others." Frostpaw, your mentor has told me you've done well in both keeping track of your target and remaining out of sight from prying eyes, and therefore have earned your right to become a warrior of the night, from this moment onwards, you will be known as Frostsight, in honour of both your good eyesight and your ability to pick out details within even the darkest of places, may our ancestors continue to guide your path young one", she said proudly. Smiling down as Frostsight slowly looked up at her. A small smile of his own, as his eyes shone within the moonlight. Lifting his head proudly, as his clanmates chanted his new name behind him.
