- He turned, unsettled. The man in white was staring down at him with eyes like sharpened daggers, and he felt afraid. Very, very afraid. His twin beside him remained frozen, looking down at the floor beside their feet where a crumpled book sat. The book that Ember knew had been stolen by a close friend of his, their servant, and a book who's thievery would result in an instant execution. The situation had felt off from the moment Ember was called into the great hall, and he wished more than anything that there was an easy way out. No matter what, he began to realize in horror that somebody would have to die today. If he lied for his friend, there would be an innocent's life at stake, but if he told the truth, his friend would die.
Ember spun around in his mind, searching for a solution. The man in white was growing impatient and Ember grew angry as he began to draw a complete blank under the pressure. Finally, he decided to confess; perhaps this would lead himself to safety, but before the words could exit his lips, Glim, his twin sister spoke out. "It was me," she said with a charmed expression. She looked up at the man with eyes like a soft puppy's and pretended to snivel, perhaps to soften his heart. There was no doubt in the land that Glim was his favorite, and in amazement, Ember saw the trial begin to come to a close; for though he was evil, the man in white would never harm his adopted daughter.
