The reason why Phoebe decided to grow her hair out over her eye is because she was afraid that nobody would approach her after one fateful day. You see, Phoebe’s right eye used to be a very small star. She could not see out of it, however it kept her entire body warm with its light. As expected, she couldn’t really look in a mirror without covering the star in order to protect her “good” eye, but it wasn’t too much of an inconvenience otherwise. People were intrigued by it, and if they didn’t look directly at her face, they would be okay with it and nobody ever complained about its brightness. Phoebe actually occasionally used it as a conversation starter! But one day in the winter, it just suddenly went out. She didn’t notice at first, because she was about to fall asleep, and then once she woke up she noticed that she was shivering with cold. She was very confused at first, because her star had always kept her warm. She wondered if her home was just so cold that it didn’t help, but the moment she stood up and looked in the mirror, she was horrified. Her star had died. When she (reluctantly) looked deep into the hole in her face where the star used to be, she saw a small white light. After some research on stars (really about 5 minutes of Googling) she realized that a small white dwarf had formed inside her eye socket. She knew that anybody that came upon her would immediately notice her star was missing, and she didn’t want anybody to think less of her. So, instead of moving far away like she wanted to, she combed her hair into a position (and cut it a bit) to cover most of the right side of her face. She told everybody that she just wanted others to be able to look at her face, and she found that they believed her. She goes about regular life now, and the only thing different is that she needs to snuggle up in blankets during the winter.
